Project
AP018.S1.1973.PR11
Description:
This project series documents a feasibility study for the Ontario Association of Architects headquarters in Toronto from 1973-1975. The office identified the project number as 7311. This project consisted of an investigation into the feasibility of purchasing an additional lot next to the headquarters building so an expansion could be completed. This study also looked at the possibility of an addition on the back of the building, and the state of the electrical and mechanical systems at that time. The headquarters had been designed by John C. Parkin's previous firm, John B. Parkin Associates, in the 1950s and was located at 50 Park Road. The project is recorded through textual records dating from 1973-1975, which consist of correspondence, conference reports, interoffice letters, and consultancy records.

Description:
This project series documents a housing study for Dr. Bhimrao Ambedker University in Lucknow, India around 1985. This project consisted of multi-storey buildings arranged in clusters. The buildings had three apartments on each floor and were joined to create common courtyards. Diamond shaped buildings with centre courtyards were also investigated for a different area of the campus, as well as a nursery school, shopping complex, administrative block and information tower. The architect also made recommendations to build facilities near the campus for recycling, waste water, vegetables and livestock, stating that doing so would avoid the natural occurrence of slums that served a similar purpose. The project is recorded through original drawings of site, floor and landscaping plans, as well as elevations and photographic negatives of the project model, likely dating from around 1985.

Description:
The project series documents the installation "La Linea Del Tempo" presented at the Galleria Quadro 096, in Fiesole, in 2011. The installation consists of an architect's drawing table, of which the top gives the illusion of sinking in. The installation is accompanied by a television playing Pettena's 1971 movie "Intens" playing on a loop. "The idea of presenting together things that were conceived in years so distant that they can easily be thought of as two different seasons of life is meant to underline the author’s conceptual coherence on the subject of his own interest regarding the architect’s profession." [1] The project series contains three photographs of the installation and a project description. Energy FREE TREE (2017)
AP207.S1.2017.PR03
Description:
The project series documents the installation "Energy FREE TREE" designed by Pettena and presented at Museion in Bozen, in 2017. The installation consists of a tower measuring eight meters high by four meters wide. The tower is built with parts, including doors, fenders, exhaust pipes, and lights, and is meant to represent a Christmas tree standing next to the museum entrance during Christmas. "The work was, in fact, meant to trigger ‘mental shortcircuits [sic]’ in order to obtain a reaction so as to introduce the subject of environmental awareness and the need of using recycled materials to reduce damages to the environment as much as possible." [1] The project series contains a video, photographs of the installation, and two drawings. The house itself is situated "at the far end of the site to maximize the size of the main garden and its southern exposure." [1] The garden includes a water basin floating under one side of the building, so that the family room, kitchen and dining room windows and decks give directly over the water basin. The project series contains correspondence, concept notes, specifications. promotional material on the project, a planting plan and photographs of the garden and the residence. Random Movies (1972)
AP207.S1.1972.PR06
Description:
The project series documents the film "Random Movies" produced by Pettena in 1972. The project consists of a film created by Pettena with randomly selected filmstrips of film reels that were going to be thrown away. The film was then presented to the public in Salt Lake City without anyone looking at the content before. The filmstrips "were out-of-date promotional films, many of them in two copies, commercial advertisements as well as electoral propaganda. So the screening proved particularly provocative for an audience that had come to attend a “cultured” lecture and found themselves, in an insistent manner, treated as an audience of “advertising skits.” "[1] The project series contains project descriptions in English and in Italian, a film still and a digital version of the film. The project series documents "Integrazioni" an installation by Pettena for the Expo Arte at the Galleria Megapoli in Bari in 1985. The installation consisted of a framed three dimensional 'picture' in which is placed two benches and a table, and perspective is added in with paint to give the impression of depth. "A picture that, for once, has a depth (so that you can enter it) is in fact a place, the place where names change, the place where natures change, the location of a shift between real and imaginary, a door opening onto a reality that is certainly imagined, but that you can pass through." [1] The project series contains sketches and photographs of the installation, and a leaflet from the Galleria Megapoli on the exhibition and the installations presented.
