Summary:
This issue identifies the critical role played by public bodies in carving out public space and celebrates new public spaces around the world shortlisted in the second edition of the AR Public awards. Five public spaces are revisited in the issue, to ask how their original designers envisaged their use and how their role in public life has changed with time and shifting incentives. Some are success stories: Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro ‘attracts the richest and the poorest‘, while in Paris’s Le Cent Quatre, artists rehearse in a convivial, open atmosphere. In New York, the High Line’s ‘successes and shortcomings are as much a product of the neoliberal economy as of its designers’, while entrance to Meskel Square in Addis Ababa has become subject to an entrance fee.

Summary:
Art-school students learn that research skills are essential if they are to contribute alternative ways of thinking, not least to counter the neoliberal forces influencing the globe. How can these research skills unique to art academies find wider application? The essays and projects presented here look at art-school research practices that can inform the worlds of culture, industry, housing, education, politics, public space, advertising and science. The projects are structured into 12 themes ranging from ''The climate crisis'' to ''Politics of public space.'' Each is embedded in a recent news story that positions how that topic is discussed in the press. Each chapter ends with a response from an academic.

Using ten landscape architectural projects on three continents, 'Landscapes and Gardens' presents the case for green landscapes and public gardens in the city. The authors discuss, through short essays, their approach to public open space, green landscapes, and human-scaled gardens. Highlighting strategies for the design of public landscapes and gardens, the use of appropriate materials and plant species, and how site and climate influence the final design, this is a collection of images of gardens, big and small, providing inspiration for those who love parks, gardens, and gardening.
