Summary:
After World War II, concrete became increasingly popular as a building medium around the world. Brutalism, the fashion for plain, heavy design, reigned. Toronto was particularly affected. The city has concrete buildings of all stripes – international landmarks, metropolitan infrastructure and even the single family home. Hundreds of these structures were built, including Viljo Revell’s groundbreaking New City Hall, John Andrew’s seminal Scarborough College and the record-smashing CN Tower. Toronto is a city cast in concrete. However, as architectural fashion has shifted from postmodernism to the glass-and-steel neomodernism of today, these concrete structures have been ignored, misunderstood and, in some cases, demolished. Concrete Toronto acts as a guide to the city’s extensive concrete heritage. A diverse group of experts has been assembled to re-examine the uniqueness and value of these buildings. Included are the insights of many of the original concrete architects, university faculty, local practitioners, journalists and industry experts. Together they explore the past and future of Toronto’s concrete buildings. Included is a wealth of new and archival photos, drawings, interviews, articles, as well as case studies of Toronto’s major concrete architecture.

Summary:
Widely acknowledged as one of the world’s most distinguished art photographers, here, for the first time, Epstein has gathered his photographs together into a book that presents the span of his career. "Mitch Epstein: Work" allows readers to trace the evolution of his formal and thematic concerns. We see how his aesthetic views, photographic tools, and politics have transformed and influenced one another over time. This book offers a look at each of Epstein’s major projects — “Common Practice” (1973-89); “Vietnam” (1992-95); “The City” (1995-98); “Family Business” (2000-03), and his current, ongoing “American Power.” His early work on the theme of recreation is given its most natural yet unexpected configuration: images from the United States are mixed with those from other parts of the world. A short essay by the artist or an excerpt from his previously published writings orients each chapter. The book includes a DVD of his film, “Dad.” Many of the pictures here have never been seen before, let alone published. For Epstein fans and for those who would like an introduction to the artist’s work, this book is a necessary addition to their library.

Summary:
his is a book about socio-spatial dynamics, the intertwinement of design and politics, and the agency of the architect(s) in rethinking collectivity and collective practices in architecture. In response to the commodification of housing and the ongoing global housing crisis, the publication addresses access to adequate housing as a fundamental human right. It looks at historical and contemporary socially-oriented housing precedents in Norway and Europe to imagine twenty-first- century not-for-profit housing alternatives in Oslo for marginalized populations and diversified family configurations. Beyond formalism, it also argues that innovative architectural solutions in a perspective of systemic societal change need to come from design processes rooted in community, cooperation, and equity. In a later section, the book expands on how radical, emancipatory pedagogies in architecture can facilitate critical thinking and action. The different visions of collectivity put forth here urge spatial practitioners, activists, and students to deeply engage with social justice by means of design and education. With contributions by Paul-Antoine Lucas, Bui Quy Son, Céline Zimmer, Patricia Lucena Ventura, Nagy Makhlouf, Aurélie M. Nzuzi De Mol, Rosaura Noemy Hernandez Romero, María Mazzanti.

Summary:
Since 2015, Wen-You Cai has returned on multiple occasions to her parents' hometown of Quanzhou, Fujian, to attend the funerals of her deceased relatives. The ceremonies in the Minnan region unfold like grand dramas in which she is both an observer and a participant. Throughout the ceremony, Wen-You is enveloped in the unknown; everything seems meticulously arranged. Amidst the overwhelming grief of losing loved ones, there exists a feeling of confusion, and taking photographs was one of the ways for her to engage in the funeral process. For this photo series, Wen-You was initially confronted by her own fear of death, intertwined with her bewilderment and curiosity about the complex funeral rituals and its uniqueness inherent to Minnan culture. To demystify these subjects, Wen-You, joined by te editions, interviewed a funeral director who provides comprehensive “one-stop services,” a monk who hosts Buddhist ceremonies, and a folklorist of Minnan rituals. Minnan Exit can be interpreted as many things–a family album, a curated collection of photographs, an unfinished journey of discovery, as well as the process of Wen-You's reconciliation with her mortality.

Summary:
This book deals with objects of migration on the central Mediterranean route. Traces of this phenomenon include objects left more or less voluntarily by migrant people along their journey, particularly upon arrival on the shores of Lampedusa and Sicily. Since 2013, hundreds of these objects have been retrieved by Massimo Ricciardo with his colleague Thomas Kilpper, and are now part of the “Objects of Escape – Inventories of Migration’’ archive. These objects are functional to the journey, such as biscuit tins and water bottles, passports and nautical charts, but they also relate to identity and memory, such as family photographs, diaries, or a handful of earth from their homeland. In the installation “Objects of Migration, Photo-Objects of Art History: Encounters in an Archive,” Ricciardo creates a dialogue between selected objects from this archive and structures from the KHI Photothek on the other. The installation, which led to this book, raises a series of highly relevant questions about these ‘talking’ objects: who do they belong to? Are they part of the cultural heritage? What would be the appropriate artistic and curatorial approach if one decided to collect, archive, exhibit, transform them?

Summary:
Over the past century, American demographics and social norms have shifted dramatically. More people are living alone, marrying later in life, and having smaller families. At the same time, their lifestyles are changing, whether by choice or by force, to become more virtual, more mobile, and less stable. But despite the ways that today's America is different and more diverse, housing still looks stuck in the 1950s. In ''Brave new home,'' Diana Lind shows why a country full of single-family houses is bad for us and our planet, and details the new efforts underway that better reflect the way we live now, to ensure that the way we live next is both less lonely and more affordable. Lind takes readers into the homes and communities that are seeking alternatives to the American norm, from multi-generational living, in-law suites, and co-living to microapartments, tiny houses, and new rural communities. Drawing on Lind's expertise and the stories of Americans caught in or forging their own paths outside of our cookie-cutter housing trap, ''Brave new home'' offers a diagnosis of the current American housing crisis and a radical re-imagining of future possibilities.

In 1968, lauded American architect Mary Otis Stevens (born 1928) and her partner, fellow architect Thomas McNulty (1919–84), initiated i Press, the influential imprint that focuses on the social context of architecture. Over the next five years, the duo released five books under the thematic umbrella of ''Human environment'' with the publisher George Braziller. The first of this series, ''The ideal Communist city'' (1969) is an English translation of urban concepts advanced by architects and planners from the University of Moscow. The book was first published in a Soviet journal of a communist youth organization in 1960 and was then republished in Italy in 1968. Offering a new way of thinking about mobility, equity and social interaction in neighborhood planning, ''The ideal Communist city'' was a direct response to suburban development and its focus on private spaces for family life: ''the new city is a world belonging to all and each'' where life is ''structured by freely chosen relationships representing the fullest, most well-rounded aspects of each human personality.'' This publication is a facsimile of ''The ideal Communist city'', with additional texts by architectural historians and the editors.
