Summary:
In 1968, lauded American architect Mary Otis Stevens (born 1928) and her partner, fellow architect Thomas McNulty (1919–84), initiated i Press, the influential imprint that focuses on the social context of architecture. Over the next five years, the duo released five books under the thematic umbrella of ''Human environment'' with the publisher George Braziller. The first of this series, ''The ideal Communist city'' (1969) is an English translation of urban concepts advanced by architects and planners from the University of Moscow. The book was first published in a Soviet journal of a communist youth organization in 1960 and was then republished in Italy in 1968. Offering a new way of thinking about mobility, equity and social interaction in neighborhood planning, ''The ideal Communist city'' was a direct response to suburban development and its focus on private spaces for family life: ''the new city is a world belonging to all and each'' where life is ''structured by freely chosen relationships representing the fullest, most well-rounded aspects of each human personality.'' This publication is a facsimile of ''The ideal Communist city'', with additional texts by architectural historians and the editors.

Summary:
Spanning the full career of Picasso (1881–1973), from his first cut drawings made in 1899 at nine years of age through to the 1960s with works he made in his eighties, ''Picasso cut papers'' features some of the artist’s most whimsical and intriguing works made on paper and in paper, alongside a select group of sculptures in metal, wood and ceramic. Although Picasso rarely sold or exhibited his cut papers (or papiers découpés) during his lifetime, he signed, dated and archived them just as he did all his works. They were simply part of a more private studio practice, often made for family or as models for his fabricators. The first publication to focus solely on Picasso’s cut papers, this book features many works reproduced for the first time with newly commissioned photography, alongside new scholarship on a little-known aspect of one of the 20th century’s most pivotal practices, which contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding innovation and abstraction at the roots of modern art. Also featured is a photo section that surveys Picasso’s engagement with cut paper and sculpture over the decades and documents his practice of cutting paper, both in and out of the studio.

Venice disputed: Marc Antonio Barbaro and venetian architecture

Summary:
In the councils and magistracies of the Venetian Republic, politicians argued intently over civic building projects in a manner curiously reminiscent of a modern democracy, taking advice from architects, engineers, and the public. Written by a leading authority on Venetian architecture, the book explores the complex dialectic between theory and practice; utopia and reality; and design and technology that infused these disputes. The bitterly contested debates are seen through the experiences of one particular Venetian nobleman, Marc'Antonio Barbaro (1518-1595). Recognized as a gifted stuccoist and draftsman, Barbaro played a prominent role in the discussions about major state building projects such as Palladio's church of the Redentore, the restoration of the Doge's Palace, and the erection of the Rialto Bridge. He was a distinguished statesman and orator, but his idealistic views about the rhetorical power of classicism frequently clashed with local technological expertise. Venice Disputed recounts not only his public role but also his private life, centered on the now-famous family villa that he and his brother commissioned. Barbaro's compelling story thus weaves together politics, architectural history, and private life in early modern Venice.

Summary:
In 1905, a young sociologist named Lewis Hine Wickes decided to pursue photography as the medium with which to denounce injustice and poverty. Hine was one of the first photographers to document the wave of mass immigration from an impoverished Europe to an economically booming America, and his portraits of immigrants at Ellis Island offered a more positive image of this influx. But as he wearied of photographing poverty, Hine developed an idealized vision of the worker that emphasized the dignity of labor--a vision that culminated in his legendary Men at Work series, first published in 1932 and today a classic American photobook. “We call this the Machine Age,” he wrote in its introduction, “But the more machines we use, the more do we need real men to make and direct them.” This volume, which includes a complete facsimile of Men at Work, is compiled from the collection of the George Eastman House, to whom Hine’s son bequeathed his archive after his death. It includes both well-known series and recently discovered early works, plus rare family photographs, ephemera and a detailed chronology.
