Summary:
The Japanese dry landscape garden has long attracted--and long baffled--viewers from the West. While museums across the United States are replicating these "Zen rock gardens" in their courtyards and miniature versions of the gardens are now office decorations, they remain enigmatic, their philosophical and aesthetic significance obscured. Reading Zen in the Rocks, the classic essay on the karesansui garden by French art historian François Berthier, has now been translated by Graham Parkes, giving English-speaking readers a concise, thorough, and beautifully illustrated history of these gardens. Berthier's guided tour of the famous garden of Ryoanji (Temple) in Kyoto leads him into an exposition of the genre, focusing on its Chinese antecedents and affiliations with Taoist ideas and Chinese landscape painting. He traces the roles of Shinto and Zen Buddhism in the evolution of the garden and also considers how manual laborers from the lowest classes in Japan had a hand in creating some of its highest examples. Parkes contributes an equally original and substantive essay which delves into the philosophical importance of rocks and their "language of stone," delineating the difference between Chinese and Japanese rock gardens and their relationship to Buddhism. Together, the two essays compose one of the most comprehensive and elegantly written studies of this haunting garden form.

Although modern wastewater treatment plants are able to treat such pollution their techniques are not applicable to small municipalities, and especially not to private houses. Through precise analysis of thirty examples of wastewater treatment plants located in different European countries and in the USA, the authors demonstrate the benefits of using water plants in the treatment of wastewater for all kinds of typologies and communities. The different examples are analysed from a functional angle and as an important element of consideration when planning landscape.

Summary:
The highway has become the buyway. Along the millions of miles the public travels, advertisers spend billions on images of cola, cars, vodka, fast food, and swimming pools that blur past us, catching our fleeting attention and turning the landscape into a corridor of commerce. A smart, succinct, and visually compelling history of the billboard in America, Buyways traces how the outdoor advertising industry changed the face of American commercialism. Taking us from itinerant bill-stickers of circus posters in the 19th century to the blinking, beeping, 3-D eyesores of today, Gudis argues that roadside advertising has turned the landscape itself into a commodity to be bought and sold as advertising space.

Simo's book spans half a century, from the year that Charles Sprague Sargent's influential "Garden and Forest" magazine ceased publication in 1897 to the appearance in 1949 of two unusual books about land and landscape—Aldo Leopold's "Sand County Almanac" and Jens Jensen's "The Clearing" —that marked the beginning of a new ecological awareness.

Summary:
Everyday America surveys the widening conceptions and applications of cultural landscape writing in the United States and, in doing so, offers a clear and compelling view of the state of cultural landscape studies today. These essays--by journalists, historians, cultural geographers, architects, landscape architects, and planners--constitute a critical evaluation of the field's theoretical assumptions, and of the work of John Brinckerhoff Jackson, the pivotal figure in the emergence of cultural landscape studies. At the same time, they present studies of twentieth-century landscapes, from the turn-of-the-century American downtown to the corporate campus and the mini-mall.
