Summary:
In the late eighteenth century, the British took greater interest than ever before in observing and recording all aspects of the natural world. Travelers and colonists returning from far-flung lands provided dazzling accounts of such exotic creatures as elephants, baboons, and kangaroos. The engraver Thomas Bewick (1753–1828) harnessed this newfound interest by assembling the most comprehensive illustrated guide to nature of his day. "A General History of Quadrupeds", first published in 1790, showcases Bewick’s groundbreaking engraving techniques that allowed text and images to be published on the same page. From anteaters to zebras, armadillos to wolverines, this delightful volume features engravings of over four hundred animals alongside descriptions of their characteristics as scientifically understood at the time. Quadrupeds reaffirms Bewick’s place in history as an incomparable illustrator, one whose influence on natural history and book printing still endures today. With a new foreword by Yann Martel.

Summary:
What is the future of the book? And, specifically, what is the future of books on art, design and architecture, and cultural-critical publications? We asked a large number of international interested individuals to respond to this question. Journalists, artists, architects, curators, translators, designers, philosophers, sociologists, teachers, book scholars, publishers, printing houses, distributors, booksellers, historians and art-historians, critics, policymakers, editors, students, and many others have enthusiastically shared their views with us, looking ahead five, twenty or seventy-two years (to the year 2100). At times utopian, wildly fantasizing, at other times with realistic scenarios, in both text and images, exciting for anyone who loves books and/or is involved in books and cultural content. Each section of this publication will be designed by various young designers, to celebrate its scope and diversity.

In ''Write, print, fold and staple'' Jim Johnstone details the enduring importance of chapbook micropresses to the ecology of Canadian literature, arguing that the chapbook is the ideal form for publishing poetry. Small and provisional, micropresses generally operate outside of the commercial anxieties of trade publishing, pursuing unmediated aesthetic, cultural and personal aims. At the heart of Johnstone’s discussion is a useful survey of fifteen notable Canadian micropresses active during the past two decades, presses whose output ranges from lo-fi, zine-like, counter-cultural productions through to works whose editing and production values far exceed those of mainstream publishers, and everything in between.

Summary:
Dedicated to the history of the children’s photobook, ''L is for Look" brings together more than a hundred albums published in different countries. From its emergence—marked by the development in the 1930s of new teaching methods based on images rather than text—through to the present day, the children’s photobook has been invested in the realistic nature of photography. Covering all the different categories of children’s literature, from ABC books to reinterpretations of traditional fairy tales, it accompanies the child in their process of development and emancipation and stimulates their creativity, all with a common goal in mind: to question and nurture their view of the world. This genre, which has been explored by some of the major figures in photography, is also a field that is predominately favored by women photographers. It is notable for the diversity of the disciplines it brings together, such as the graphic arts and live performance.
