Summary:
A visually immersive celebration of recent residential, commercial, institutional, and mixed-use projects, this book reveals the poetic spirit and guiding principles behind the firm’s unmistakable architectural language; the calming presence of water and fountains encourages reflection; bold, expressive color brings warmth and vitality; and the clarity of geometric form creates spaces that feel both uplifting and composed. Together, these qualities shape an architecture that is enduring, distinct, and profoundly human. Readers are transported into environments where architecture, art, and landscape converge—from the breathtaking, color-saturated Casa Grande located in Los Cabos, and La Pausa House seamlessly embedded in the landscape of Valle de Bravo, to the dramatic coast of Jalisco at the monumental Four Seasons Tamarindo. Rooted in Mexico’s cultural identity yet informed by a global perspective, Legorreta’s work reflects a commitment to material richness, environmental sensitivity, and designing spaces that enhance daily life.

Summary:
Since the 1990's, Olafur Eliasson has been exploring cognitive and physical phenomena as we know them from the natural sciences and nature. He uses both technically sophisticated equipment and deceptively simple means such as water or light to create artificial landscapes and moments of perception that let viewers perceive or reenact natural phenomena. Their strongly atmospheric but entirely constructed nature makes viewers become painfully conscious of how far modern civilization has progressed from immediate experience; they question the acceptance of authenticity in the area of perception. This book, published in an edition of only 1,500 copies and conceived in cooperation with the artist, features a series of landscape photographs by Eliasson from his native Iceland, exploring the limits and conventions of our traditional view of landscape. They show that our perception of nature has been fundamentally affected by cultural influences, memories, and expectations.

Summary:
Specializing in the design of museum and gallery spaces, hospitality, commercial retail and residential projects, Miami-based Rene Gonzalez Architects also endeavors to develop solutions to rising sea levels in coastal communities. This volume compiles drawings and photographs of a residence on Prairie Avenue in Miami designed by the firm in 2018. Inspired by red mangrove trees, the dwelling hovers entirely above the ground plane. A lush garden covers most of the site and absorbs enormous quantities of water. Charles Renfro celebrates the building thus: "Is this blown-up modernism, a house made of fragments and gaps, also a new gay architecture? If so, it is but one of the many ways this compact complex house performs, one that in so many ways pulls modernism forward into a brave new world of sensuality, sexuality and lifestyle. Within it, social progress has found a new architecture."

Summary:
An ancient building method that has experienced a renaissance in recent years as people seek greener and more sustainable building materials and construction methods, rammed earth is a wall building technique that uses earth, chalk, lime and gravel as raw materials. Naturally insulating, non-combustible, and durable, they can be labor intensive to construct without machinery and are susceptible to water damage if not properly protected or maintained. Nevertheless, rammed earth buildings are found on almost every continent, in a range of environments from the humid, to the semi-arid and temperate – from simple single-family dwellings to large and complex multistory buildings. Alongside green building considerations, the availability of the natural components and a design suited to local climatic conditions are key factors which favor their use. "Down to earth" is a compilation of some of the most interesting recent examples of this interesting and unusual building technique.

Summary:
Vancouver is heralded around the world as a model for sustainable development. In "Planning on the edge," nationally and internationally renowned planning scholars, activists, and Indigenous leaders assess whether that reputation is warranted. While recognizing the many successes of the "Vancouverism" model, the contributors acknowledge that the forces of globalization and speculative property development have increased social inequality and housing insecurity since the 1980s in the city and the region. To determine the city’s prospects for overcoming these problems, they look at city planning from all angles, including planning for the Indigenous population, environmental and disaster planning, housing and migration, and transportation and water management. By looking at policies at the local, provincial, and federal levels and taking reconciliation with Indigenous peoples into account, "Planning on the edge" highlights the kinds of policies and practices needed to reorient Vancouver’s development trajectory along a more environmentally sound and equitable path.

Summary:
Conventional representations reinforce its reading as an urban condition resulting from neoliberal capitalism. These forces have expanded the city grid and extruded its architectures as a laboratory of urban ideas. Yet, like many other coastal and insular conditions, twenty-first century Manhattan faces adverse Anthropogenic climate change. Stronger storm surges and sea level rise now demand that the island recalibrates its social and environmental positions. The city needs to consider once again its fluid archipelagic conditions inherited from glacial dynamics. With a focus on iconic city representations, the book examines distinct logics that try to make capitalist progress compatible with its territorial conditions. Even though these logics of land, water and ground – here called geologics – are perhaps less dominant than the dense urban culture and, therefore, less predominant in the representation of the city, they are still important to explain why Manhattan evolved to its current condition.

In the Fall of 2004, The Museum of Modern Art completed a major expansion and renovation of its famous midtown Manhattan building, doubling the Museum's size and introducing dynamic new galleries and public spaces. At the core of the remodeled Museum, designed by architect Yoshio Taniguchi, is the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden, newly restored to its 1953 dimensions. Described by Taniguchi as "perhaps the most distinctive single element of the Museum today," the Sculpture Garden, an oasis of water, trees and masterpieces of modern sculpture, has long been the Museum's signature space--as well as its social heart. This fully illustrated, affordable, pocket-sized book is designed to convey the beauty and elegance of the garden. It also features a photographic chronology of the many performances, exhibitions and events held in the garden over the years, as well as an introduction and a brief historical narrative.

Summary:
Off the Grid confronts the ecological and cultural problems associated with the way we get and use energy, and explains how it is possible to live in a beautifully designed home using much less--no matter where your home is located. Our homes are connected by a nearly invisible grid of infrastructure that binds us together. It is a system of electrical poles, wire, substations, hydroelectric dams, telecommunication towers, and water extraction and sewage systems. From within this system we work, play, and raise families. We have also created one of the greatest environmental challenges known to modern civilization. The signs of our impact upon the world can be recognized in the reports of environmental changes occurring across the earth, and they can also be seen in the growing failures of the energy grids across the world as the current system is stressed beyond its capacity.

Summary:
At its founding, Boston was a small peninsula; over the last 375 years the city has doubled in size by filling in the surrounding tidal flats -areas covered with water at high tide and exposed at low. In "Walking tours of Boston's made land", historian Nancy Seasholes outlines twelve walks that trace where and why Boston's man-made land was created, and, along the way, uncovers fascinating and little-known pieces of Boston history. In the course of these walks - around the central waterfront, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the South End, Charlestown, and elsewhere - she shows us how Boston's past is always just below the surface of its present. Each walk is accompanied by a map that shows the route and original shoreline. The walks are illustrated with historical maps, historical photographs and views, and current photographs. All walks are accessible by public transportation.

Summary:
As major actors in the unfolding drama of climate change, glaciers feature prominently in Earth’s past and its future. Wherever on the planet we live, glaciers affect each of us directly. They control the atmospheric and ocean circulations that drive the weather; they supply drinking and irrigation water to millions of people; and they protect us from catastrophic sea-level rise. The very existence of glaciers affects our view of the planet and of ourselves, but it is less than two hundred years since we first realized that ice ages come and go and that glaciers once covered much more of the planet’s surface than they do now. An inspiration to artists and a challenge for engineers, glaciers mean different things to different people. Crossing the boundaries between art, environment, science, nature, and culture, this book considers glaciers from myriad perspectives, revealing their complexity, majesty, and importance—but also their fragility.
