Description:
This project series documents the Estaçäo de Metropolitano Baixa Chiado in Lisbon, Portugal. The office assigned the dates 1992-1998 for this project. The Estaçäo de Metropolitano Baixa Chiado was built between 1992 and 1998. The station played a key role in Siza's functional reconstruction plan of the Chiado area. It was an essential part of Siza's recovery plan for the district of Chiado in order to create more access to different parts of town due to the irregular elevations of the district. The station's escalators were created to give access to the Rua do Crucifixo and Largo do Chiado square. Elevators were also built to give access to Rua Ivens. Drawings include sketches, studies, working drawings, shop drawings and mechanical drawings. Textual documentation includes specifications, correspondence, permit and supplier documentation, and meeting reports. Photographic materials document the model, site and construction work. The materials that were donated in the 2019 accession document the elevators built to give access to Rua Ivens. Additional documentation for this project can also be found in the project subseries AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS1.

Description:
This project series documents the restoration of the Grandella building in Lisbon, Portugal. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 58/80 N5. The office assigned the date 1988-1998 for this project. The destructive fire of 1988 started in The Grandella building. It was part of Bloco C and identified as building 5 in Siza's reconstruction plan. It was originally designed by French architect George Demaye and built by Francisco de Almeida Grandella in 1907. Siza's program included the introduction of new functions, including cultural, administrative, and retail activities. Due to the historic importance of the building in Lisbon, a particular effort was made to restore the original façade. Drawings include studies, working drawings, mechanical drawings and structural drawings. Textual materials include project documentation, studies, meeting reports and correspondence. Photographic material includes photographs of the building before the fire, ruins, and construction work. There is also a study model for this project. Documentation can also be found in subseries Master plans and exterior spaces (AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS1) and Bloco C (AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS7).

CP Aviary
AP144.S2.D113
Description:
File documents an unexecuted project for an aviary and laboratory for the Royal Veterinary College, Camden, London, England. The design had to be easily dismantled, transported, and re-erected, since it was possible that there would be a "Stage 2" where the aviary would be moved from its original urban site to a more open rural site. Conceptual sketches illustrate preliminary ideas for the general structure and for. Some sketches are colored with metallic ink to outline structural components. Schematic design drawings illustrate two alternate plans, probably for urban and rural sites. A schematic flow diagram shows the use of research equipment within specified laboratory zones/research modules. Design development drawings show the aviary structure for both the urban and rural site. Isometrics, axonometrics, and perspectives show spatial division and accommodation within the aviary. Duplicate reprographic copies are made from the original drawings; some are annotated with notes. Material in this file was produced between 1978 and 1989, but predominantly between 1981 and 1985. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, reference drawings, other drawings, a model, photographic materials, and textual records.

Description:
This project series documents the planning or reorganisation of the central sector of Abandoibarra, in Bilbao. The firm identified this project as number 83. At the time, the development of this area was essential for the development of the city. The firm described their project as: “[...] The centre of attention would be transferred from the material to the space between the things, working with the void: making a project of air, converting the dimensional [sic], the distance between the things, the public space (ARCH270975)." The project was developed by the Abalos & Herreros with César Azcárate and Patxi Mangado. They also worked with Eva Gómez, Juan Lahuerta, David Torres and Carlos Urtailquil. In 1993, the project won first prize at the competition Ordenación Abando-Ibarra, an open national competition organised by the Ayuntamiento de Bilbao (Bilbao City Council) and Colegio de Arquitectos del País Vasco y Navarra. This qualified the project for the international level of the competetion. However the project was not selected for the final round. Documenting the project are conceptual and design development drawings, and photographic materials.

Description:
Project series comprises design and promotional material for a bed entitled "Il carro di giove" designed by Poli in 1991. The bed was made for F.lli Ciulli (likely Fratelli Ciulli), based in Florence, Italy, and an accompanying blanket was made for the textile design company Fanair. The bed project was featured in the 1991 publication Catalogo Armonia by publisher Ponte alla Grazie in Florence, as well as the April 1992 issue of Casa Vogue (no. 240). The design features a large alabaster disc suspended from an iron frame. Project material in the series ranges from early sketches to drawings and collages of the bed in various media, with some drawings overlayed with wax and silver paper. Also included are excerpted pages from the Catalogo Armonia, featuring a conversation with Sergio Cammilli, who commissioned furniture designs from architects and contemporary artists. The Catalogo Armonia pages also feature images of the bed and blanket prototype. This project series includes textile reference studies, though no drawings or designs for the bed's blanket were received from Poli.

Clay House (1972)
AP207.S1.1972.PR02
Description:
The project series documents "Clay House", an installation undertaken by Pettena and a group of his students from the University of Utah, in Salt Lake City, in 1972. It consisted of covering an entire inhabited house with clay located in a middle-class neighbourhood of Salt Lake City. The installation "was another study on the “working” of material, or rather a statement on the re-naturalization of denatured places and materials [...]." It also transformed the house by changing its colour from the other houses in the area, "all devitalized by the anonymity as well as the uniformity of their coloring." [2] The project series contains photographs of the residence before being covered in clay, a photograph of Pettena's team working at covering the house with clay, photographs of the finished installation, and a photograph of the model. The project series also contains drawings for the installation, and a drawing showing four stages of the installation. The project series documents the Recuperação do Restaurante Pai Ramiro in Porto, Portugal. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 19/90. The office assigned the dates 1990-1994 for this project. This project consists of a design for the restaurant Pai Ramiro in an existing eighteenth-century home. The restaurant was to have a capacity of 36 people, with a waiting bar, kitchen, storage spaces and a second-floor terrace. The building program proposed a bar area flooded in natural light from windows that revealed a backyard garden. The installation of air conditioning, a fire detection system and ventilation systems were also proposed. This project was not built. The project is recorded through drawings, photographic materials and some textual records dating from 1989-1995. The drawings include sketches, plans, elevations, sections, perspectives, details and framing drawings, while the photographic materials largely document the exisiting building. The textual records consist of correspondence, permit and supplier documentation, and the electrical program.

Description:
This project series documents an addition to the Toronto Sun building in downtown Toronto from 1978-1980. The office identified the project number as 7816. From 1973-1975, Parkin Architects Planners designed and constructed the Toronto Sun press plant and office building at 333 King Street East. This project documents an office addition made to the original building. This consisted of the addition of three floors to the existing three-storey structure. The top floor, the sixth, was the main focus of this project and included the executive suite with offices, a boardroom, a sunroom, and a private cafeteria. The project is recorded through drawings and textual materials dating from 1979-1982. Most drawings are reprographic copies arranged within the textual materials. The textual records consist of correspondence, site and meeting reports, financial records, change orders, contractor and consultancy records, supplementary instructions, specifications, tender documents, schedules, interoffice letters, a project notebook and project agendas. File AP018.S1.1978.PR10.002 contains an index to the textual records, which was created by the office.
