Summary:
In 'The Intimacy of Making', London-based Swiss-French photographer Hélène Binet takes us on a visual journey through a world of stone, walls and gardens to depict and celebrate the Korean art of making, and to discover traditional Korean architecture through a Western lens. In Binet’s photographs, which were taken over the course of the last three years, we encounter three typologies of traditional architecture in South Korea: the Confucian school and sacred site of Byeongsan Seowon; the garden and tea house Soswaewon; and the Jongmyo shrine. Her camera unites the natural surrounds and the built structures to convey the atmosphere of these three sites.

This publication concentrates on the Functionalist stylistic register and ideology. Espen Gleditsch takes his point of departure in the architecture exhibition Weissenhofziedlung in Stuttgart, which opened in 1927 with the Functionalist icon Mies van der Rohe as artistic director. The criteria for the apartment blocks in the competition required all facades to be white and all roofs to be flat. But most of these houses were in fact painted in bright colours, although the black-and-white photographs in the catalogue maintained the impression of whiteness. The whiteness of the modern architecture was disseminated through the press, an impression that is still being reproduced.

Summary:
The current urban landscape in the Netherlands is more and more derived from neo-traditional architecture: complete suburbs are built in this style. The houses appear old but gleam with newness. Project developers do not sell individual houses but 'images' that look familiar and safe. Colourful artist's impressions on billboards with appealing slogans win still hesitant buyers over. Many picturesque examples from the history of Dutch architecture are nonchalantly copied and some locations could be mistaken for Disneyland. The photographer Korrie Besems documents this new urban landscape in her photographs. The guiding principle is the need to show the artificial and unnatural transformation process of the densely populated Netherlands.

This book presents Donovan Wylie's photographs of Forward Operating Bases constructed in the Kandahar Province of Afghanistan. From 2006 to 2011, Canada sent nearly 3,000 military personnel to Afghanistan in support of NATO's International Security Assistance Force. Serving alongside infantry and artillery, military engineers designed a network of outposts throughout the province. Built on natural promontories with multiple lines of sight, these outposts formed a protective visual architecture. They were frequently positioned on defensive locations established during earlier conflicts and represent reincarnations of past histories under new powers. The resulting images are the latest phase in Wylie's interrogation of the architecture of modern conflict.

Summary:
The two Essen-based photographers Petra Wittmar and Ulrich Deimel have been considered top league German architecture photographers since their participation in the Venice Architecture Biennale in 1996. Their latest chosen task has been a documentary photographic presentation of architecture from the period between the wars in North-Rhine Westphalia. Important master builders such as Dominikus Böhm, Fritz Schupp, Peter Behrens or Bruno Paul created structures in the Rhine-Ruhr area. The mine building Zollverein by Schupp/Kremer at Essen can hardly be matched for its functionalist austerity and aesthetic homogeneity, the elegance of the Disch house by Bruno Paul in Cologne has set standards. The photographers also discovered and payed tribute to a number of unknown master pieces, presenting an assembly of portraits of architecture from this era, with characteristic and often surprising details.

Summary:
The reputation as an auteur that Paul Virilio (1932–2018) enjoys today derives from the work he did for his ''Bunker Archeology''. When, in the second half of the 1950s, he began photographing abandoned Second World War bunkers along France’s Atlantic coast, he was working with glass as an artistic medium. In 1966, he presented his photographs to the public for the first time in the magazine architecture principe, which he co-edited. At the time, he was particularly interested in the architectural aspects of these wartime installations. He saw the bunkers as “harbingers of a new architecture”, which he sought to capture in the term “cryptic architecture”. The first exhibition of Virilio’s ''Bunker Archeology'' was staged at the Centre Pompidou in 1975, while the museum was still in the process of being established. His seminal book was published in conjunction with this. It laid out all the motifs of his philosophical thinking: military space and communications warfare, camouflage and acceleration, a scrupulous reading of the present coupled with a desire for philosophical speculation. Although it is almost fifty years since the work was first published, ''Bunker Archeology'' is still full of connections to the present.
