Summary:
HISTAORMINA presents new concepts of architectural education and urban design through the lens of an intensive two-week workshop held in September of 2001. With the unique coastal hilltown of Taormina, Sicily as both subject and setting, the authors led a team of European and American students in an exploration that combined visual and conceptual design, historical references, critical discourse, and both local and global issues with innovative new methods of individual creativity and collaboration. The results are documented in an extensive series of photographs of experimental models and constructions and the working processes that produced them. These are accompanied by comments from the students and a text by the authors explaining the concepts behind this new approach and describing its implications for the future.

Summary:
This book is both a call to reassess the architecture profession and its education, and a toolkit for graduates and working architects to untangle their skills, passions, and value from traditional architectural practice and consider alternate pathways. Written by design professionals and expert career consultants, it is informed by numerous client accounts as well as the authors’ own stories and routes out of architecture. A wide range of architecture students, graduates, educators, and professionals will recognize themselves within the pages of this book and find prompts to reassess their working practices, teaching styles, and the profession itself. It will be of particular value to those students skeptical of joining the architecture workforce, as well as those further along and considering a career change.

Summary:
This book features the experimental pavilion projects carried by the AA's Intermediate Unit 2 over the past six years. Over the past six years the students of the Architectural Association's Intermediate Unit 2 have designed and built a series of experimental pavilions. Structured to follow a year in the life of the unit, this book presents the processes of the pavilions' design and production, from concept ideas to workshop fabrication. Essays by the unit's tutors, Charles Walker and Martin Self, explain the ambitions and pedagogic basis of the programme, rooted in the idea of experiential learning. Through the voices of students, tutors and anonymous critics, both the educational validity of this innovative design-build programme and its architectural output is explored.
