Summary:
Photographs, newspaper cuttings, postcards, drawings, and slides: on entering the studio of Eduardo Souto de Moura, winner of the Pritzker Prize 2011, one is confronted with a variety of images on the walls that engage in a dialogue. How do these photos, drawings, and illustrations impact his design practice? What is the relationship between the image and the completed building? Floating Images uses this question as an opportunity to examine the architect’s visual universe. He has added images from his extensive collection of drawings and project sketches and reorganized them in this atlas. Complex relationships are formed between the individual illustrations and projects. Essays by Pedro Bandeira, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Diogo Seixas Lopes, and Philip Ursprung provide a contextualization through the history of art and images.

Summary:
In the aftermath of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis of March 2011, Japan has become a bigger part of the world’s consciousness than it has been for years. But Japan also is grappling with other problems that, over the long run, pose a much greater challenge to its national well-being than the devastation in Tohoku.... How can the country compete with a rising China? Cope with a fast-aging society? Deal with its enormous debt? Rediscover its entrepreneurial verve? Regain its position as a leader in technology and innovation? In "Reimagining Japan", McKinsey & Company, a management consulting firm, asked more than 80 global leaders and experts to consider these questions. The authors offer their assessments of Japan’s past, present and future.

Though known mostly for his films, the German-Hungarian photographer Andorvon Barsy's (1899 - 1965) began in 1930 to take dynamic photos of the harbors of Rotterdam, aiming his camera at cranes and bridges to capture a dynamic image of modern steel construction. This groundbreaking exhibition catalog commemorates the first public showing ever of these vital, almost-abstract photos from the eye of an early modern artist. Von Barsy's best-known movies (such as 1928's De stad die nooit rust and 1930's experimental Hoogstraat) are featured at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2011. The impeccably printed catalog includesaround 100 photographs, with an introduction by art historian and critic Frits Gierstberg, head of exhibitions at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam.

Summary:
Alongside Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff and Thomas Struth, Candida Höfer (born 1944) belongs to the first generation of photographers that graduated from Bernd and Hilla Becher’s famous class at the Düsseldorf Arts Academy in the early 1980s. Since then, Höfer has traveled the world, photographing at a respectful distance the motifs that she encounters on her travels, whether single objects, architectural spaces or people. Her photographs of public spaces almost devoid of people--interiors, libraries, museums and entrance halls--are characterized by a cool objectivity and the precise rendering of detail. This publication gathers old and new work from the past four decades, with a special emphasis on the works produced in Düsseldorf since her time at the Arts Academy, and on works made since 2011.

Summary:
''Shigeru Ban builds a better world'' inspires children and families to learn about the remarkable work of one of the most acclaimed architects in the world, Shigeru Ban. Known for his innovative approach to materials and designs, Ban also regularly comes to the aid of disaster victims and refugees by designing temporary shelters that are typically made from inexpensive and recyclable paper tubes. His projects include a temporary school after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, shelters after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and a church in New Zealand after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. The debut title in Tra Publishing's ''For Good'' series, this illustrated book encourages children and their families to learn about artists, the artistic process, and the art for humanitarian and environmental good in a way that is accessible, appealing, and welcoming.
