Summary:
For many architects he is a landmark - Jean Prouvé, creator of the metal curtain wall, pioneer in its application and early initiator of industrialised building techniques. His unfailing ability to combine functional engineering achievements with artistic sensitivity commands recognition. The period covered in this latest volume is significant in many respects. The post-war years placed enormous demands on housing and school construction. In his Maxéville factory Prouvé developed pre-fabricated housing, facade panelling, light filtering and other systems on a large scale. He was inspired by the works of the automobile and aeronautics industry, developing new applications for aluminium, which he presented in the 1954 Aluminium Centenary Pavilion. Moreover, Prouvé's furnitures of this period have become valuable collectors' items, some of which are now being reissued under licence.

Summary:
This publication is based on an illustrated talk presented by architect and historian Fernanda Canales in June 2024 at the Vitra Design Museum as part of the Barragán Lecture series. It focuses on the Mexican architect Luis Barragán (1902–88), whose work occupies a permanent place in the canon of 20th-century architecture and continues to fascinate architectural scholars, connoisseurs and enthusiasts. Barragán strove for an "emotional architecture," claiming that "any work of architecture which does not express serenity is a mistake." He used raw materials such as stone or wood, and his preference for hidden light sources gives his interiors a particularly subtle and lyrical atmosphere. In her lecture, Canales deftly interweaves Barragán's biography with his major built works, which are characterized by a skillful approach to spatial and chromatic atmospheres and environments.

Summary:
The Cedric Price fonds at the CCA is an inexhaustible source of provocations about what architecture is and the questions it should ask. Sofia Nannini looks here at a small but representative collection of files within this vast archive: a proposal for a light and reconfigurable livestock pen to clean and weigh cattle and sheep, which Price suggests can also become a bucolic family picnic area when not used for the animals, simply by removing the gates that control them. And it is precisely this question of control of the non-human that Nannini chooses to focus on. In the context of Price's interest in impermanence and the creative potential of human interaction and individual free will, Nannini exposes architecture's responsibility in perpetuating the assumed dominion of our species over others.

Summary:
Following the Second World War, Montreal earned a reputation as a North American hotbed of eroticism due to its red-light district, nightclub scene, and pornography industry. Although this erotic environment had a significant presence in the art and media of the period, the topic has been neglected by scholars. "The pornographic delicatessen" offers an important examination of the development of erotic art and design in the city’s postwar and Quiet Revolution era. Matthew Purvis surveys a range of erotic materials to rediscover nearly forgotten artworks in a period that expanded definitions of what could be considered art. He stresses the confluence of visual art and film, magazines, and journalism during the period as formal models passed from surrealism and automatism into the evolution of a Quebec-specific variation of Pop Art called "ti-pop."

Summary:
Werner Blaser, architect and author introduces the reader to the world of Tadao Ando's sunken architecture. In photographs, a method of construction is presented that has its roots in the traditional "earth dwellings" of northern and north-western China. Yet Tadao Ando's in-ground buildings are no dark, cave-like structures. The interiors are illuminated through open atriums and large, deep-drawn areas of glass, thus giving light an almost palpable form. In the face of increasing environmental damage and urban housing problems, architectural strategies have to be developed that respect nature and do not put extra pressure on urban surroundings. With his sunken structures, Tadao Ando succeeds in building in accordance with nature, at the same time connecting tradition and present - thus making the cultural history of building relevant for the present.

Summary:
This poetic and minimalist anthology presents 10 years of heritage of AIRES MATEUS design studios at the Accademia di Archittettura di Mendrisio in Switzerland.100 images of largescale models built by students of AIRES MATEUS are brought together to create a family portrait. Each expertly staged model is pictured with the essential schemes necessary to understand the volumes portrayed. Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus’ many years of experience in pedagogy and the use of models in practice are brought together in a manifesto which precedes the anthology of images. The importance of the model in the formation of architectural ideas and throughout the design process, as well as its potency as a standalone statement are highlighted. The evocative photographs in this book reveal abstract spaces produced by artistic interpretations of light, volume and materiality.

Summary:
Americans, on average, spend between six and ten seconds with individual artworks in museums or galleries—hardly time enough. But how, in our culture of distraction, might we extend attention? Slow Art models sustained ways of looking, through encounters with various media both present and past—including photography, painting, sculpture, “living pictures,” film, video, digital and performance art—even light and space. Works by Diderot, Emma Hamilton, Oscar Wilde, Jeff Wall, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Andy Warhol, and Richard Serra, among others, shape a new and distinct aesthetic field. But rather than a collection of objects, slow art is participatory—it directly engages beholders to bring artworks to life. Against current orthodoxy, Arden Reed argues that, for contemporary viewers, the contemplation of slow art is akin to religious practices during the ages of faith.

Summary:
Steven Holl celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of his landmark book "Anchoring with Compression," a collection of thirty-five major projects from the past decade. Holl applies concepts from neuroscience, literature, social science, and philosophy to develop the idea of compression: the condensation of material and social forces to create meaningful and sustainable architecture. A diverse roster of international works includes an expansion of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston ; academic facilities for Columbia University, Princeton University, and the Glasgow School of Art; urban plans; a harbor gateway for Copenhagen; and an extension of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. All demonstrate Holl's poetic attention to light, space, and water; a subtle and tactile employment of material and color; and an awareness of architecture's potential to connect people through inspiring public spaces.
