Summary:

Summary:
The artists Cy Twombly and Sally Mann may at first seem an unlikely pairing. He was a leading contemporary artist who defied easy categorization, a painter and sculptor whose enigmatic work often referenced mythology and epic poetry. She is a photographer with an uncanny ability to tap raw human emotion, whether depicting members of her family or the landscape of the American South. What they had in common was place—both grew up in rural Lexington, Virginia, where Twombly kept a studio and produced some of his most important work until his death in 2011, and where Mann has lived and worked all her life.Over the course of several years, Mann photographed inside Twombly’s studio. The result is a rare insider’s view of Twombly’s process—we sense him in the room at every turn, although he is always just beyond the frame—and a poetic dialogue between two artistic visions.

Summary:
When his 24-hour film The Clock was awarded the Golden Lion at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011, Christian Marclay’s hour had struck. Yet as an artist, performer and pioneer of turntablism, the Swiss-American Christian Marclay (born 1955) had already been famous for his complex oeuvre for more than 30 years, translating sounds and music into visual forms in his performances, installations, collages, sculptures and photographs, creating new sensory experiences that his viewers had never before experienced. Comic books and mangas are the source material for Marclay’s most recent works: the immersive video animation "Surround Sounds" (2014–15) and the series of Onomatopoeia paintings and works on paper inspired by the wet, liquid sounds of painting. Christian Marclay: Action, an extensive monographic survey, covers the entire spectrum of the artist’s multimedia and synaesthetic oeuvre, from previously little-known early works to his most recent paintings and video.

Summary:
This vibrantly designed, updated and expanded edition celebrates every facet of the skyscraper as an architectural icon. Few buildings rivet our attention like skyscrapers. As the race to build higher and higher continues, these symbols of success and economic power dominate and reshape urban skylines across the globe. Opening with Chicago s Reliance Building, built in 1894, and closing with plans for the London Bridge Tower, scheduled to be completed in 2011, eye-catching two to four page spreads in this up-to-date and comprehensive volume capture over fifty of the world s most important skyscrapers. Each building is breathtakingly photographed and an accompanying text offers intriguing historical details, notes on construction, and engineering feats. Tracing the evolution of these magnificent structures, Skyscrapers illustrates their significance not only in architectural history, but also as a reflection of humankind s most competitive and optimistic urges.

Summary:
One of Japan’s leading electronic composers, Ryoji Ikeda (born 1966) manipulates sound in various “raw” states, often using frequencies at the very limits of human hearing. Occupying a unique soundworld between ambient electronica, sinewave noise and glitch beats, Ikeda’s music has expanded into art contexts more extensively than any of his contemporaries. Datamatics is a long-term art project that explores our reception of miniscule audio and visual data. Developed between 2006–2012, it consists of an audiovisual concert, installations, publications, a radio program and a CD. This book documents most of the works from the series, emphasizing three major Datamatics exhibitions presented in Yamaguchi (Japan 2008), Bogota (Columbia 2011) and Gijon (Spain 2012). Alongside graphic material relating to the production processes such as data sources, graphic scores and technical diagrams, the book also includes texts by curators Kazunao Abe, Maria Belen Sez de Ibarra and Benjamin Weil.

Summary:

Summary:
The growth of the number and scale of Chinese museums in the 21st century, from about 1,400 at the turn of the century to over 5,000 to date, reflects the government’s Museum Development Plan for 2011-2020 to open one museum per 250,000 inhabitants, with the goal of attracting one billion visitors at the end of the decade. What are the motivations for the rapid development of museums in China? How is the public responding? Who pays for these museums and how? What has been the impact of china’s urbanization? How do Chinese museums balance education, scientific research, social cohesion, cultural diplomacy and tourism both internal and external? These are issues that continue to be discussed and debated among western museum professionals in the context of our 200 - year history of modern museology. How are these debates evolving in China, which has its own history of museology over that same period from colonialism to communism and from isolation to opening up to the world?

Summary:
Call Ampersand Response is a collaborative artwork made through an exchange of images via email. Between 2011 and 2017 Canadian artists Michael Dumontier and Micah Lexier conceived this activity as a way to share with each other their mutual interest in found images, line drawings and used books. The starting image was a circle on a rectangle; every subsequent image was visually connected to the previous one. It was understood from the outset that they had to use images that could be scanned from physical items they already had at home (no images from the internet), such as children's books, technical manuals and assorted ephemera. The call-and-response nature of the enterprise can be appreciated in the pairs of facing pages that present themselves as you go through the book. This second edition, expanding on the Nieves edition of 2013, includes the entire project of 196 exchanges that make up Dumontier and Lexier's clever, competitive, meandering conversation.
