Summary:
Each chapter of the book is dedicated to one decade, with an essay outlining general developments during those ten years and a discussion of the most distinctive projects; the most important projects are illustrated. The images consist to a large extent of historic and new photographic material, supplemented where necessary with plans and design drawings. Through the decades, the themes discussed include: the transition from 'utilitarian greenery' to 'greenery for consumption', the Zuiderzee Works - the construction of the massive Afsluitdijk (Enclosing Dike) to close off the Zuiderzee from the Waddenzee, the changes in agriculture, the Ecological Master Plan, garden design on country estates, the transformation of managed nature into 'new nature', and the development of public gardens and parks. The design or the designer are the main focus throughout, always considered in the light of broad social developments, such as fashionable trends, the increase of scale and intensification in agriculture, and changing recreational demands. The book contains work of a.o. Zocher, De Bazel, Granpré Molière, Mien Ruys, Van Eesteren, Dudok, Bijhouwer, Le Roy, Fortuyn/O'Brien, Baljon, Van Gessel and West 8.

Featured in the 2018 film "The gardener," Les Quatre Vents in Charlevoix County, Quebec, has been acclaimed as the most aesthetically satisfying and horticulturally exciting landscape experience in North America. This twenty-acre garden seamlessly combines traditional and novel elements into a splendid composition, adorned with unexpected touches and perfectly compatible with its natural surroundings. "The greater perfection," first published in 2001, illustrates the delights, diversions, and surprises that await the garden’s visitors. Francis H. Cabot’s account of the challenges he faced in developing Les Quatre Vents reveals the fascinating process behind the creation of a world-class garden that has become a mecca for horticultural enthusiasts around the globe. Winner of the 2003 Annual Literature Award of the Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries and featuring stunning full-color images by five leading garden photographers, "The greater perfection" is one of the most beautiful books on gardens to appear in years. Many bulbous plants have been dubbed "heralds of spring", but none is more recognisable than those carrying actual megaphones to spread the word: daffodils. Throughout history, painters, poets, and writers all over the world have been inspired by the flower’s various symbolisms. An introduction to the genus ‘Narcissus’ by Lou-Lou van Staaveren, with photographs by Elspeth Diederix, sets the tone for this issue. Other contributors include philosopher Christopher F. Julien, who reflects on how scent mixes with memories, and artist Tina Farifteh, who digs into her personal archive and writes about her memories of growing up in Iran, where daffodils are a symbol of hope.

Summary:
In this lavishly illustrated volume, Robin Karson traces the development of a distinctly American style of landscape design through an analysis of seven country places created by some of the nation's most talented landscape practitioners. In the mid-nineteenth century Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of New York's Central Park, developed an approach to landscape design based on the principles of the English Picturesque which also emphasized a specifically American experience of nature and scenery. After Olmsted's retirement in 1897, these precepts continued to ground a new generation of American landscape architects through the next four decades, a period known as the “country place era,” a time of rapid economic, social, and cultural change. The chapters in this book trace a progression in the period from the naturalistic wild gardens of Warren Manning to the mysterious “Prairie style” landscapes of Jens Jensen to the proto-modernist gardens of Fletcher Steele. Other practitioners cov ered are Charles Platt, Ellen Biddle Shipman, Beatrix Farrand, Marian Coffin, and Lockwood de Forest Jr. The projects profiled follow a broad geographic arc, from Stockbridge, Massachusetts, to Santa Barbara, California. All seven landscapes are now open to visitors.
