Summary:
Only a few decades ago, Dubai was merely a tranquil Bedouin city. Today, the skyline of a boomtown rises from the desert. Reports about it are distinguished by superlatives. In particular, reports regardign new buildings in this country of little shadow overshadow anything that has been constructed before. Burj Al Arab, currently the world's largest luxury hotel, with its also technically unique facade is just one example of these buildings. Palm Project or Hydropolis, both visionary, artificially created islands belong to the same category. As does the construction of the world's highest apartment tower. Dubai presents a kind of preview of the ultramodern - a trend that is also reflected in the design of various restaurants, hotels and label stores. Representing the most important gate to the Middle East, this city is primarily one thing: thoroghly international and with incredible power on its way to a new future. This is the theme of this book, with chosen objects and crucial information concerning them.

Summary:
"Landscape + 100 words to inhabit it" is a title that intends to present a condition of contemporary landscape by measuring it through a direct and immediate form : terms, definitions, ideas, microstories, short texts, notes. It is a collection of instant snaps rather than a complete critical and theoretical look at the subject. It is a group of terms asked for and formulated by authors that are not only architects and landscape architects, but also urbanists, philosophers, critics, poets, geographers and writers. It is a collection of reflections that underlie aesthetic and cultural categories as much as technical-professional values and practices. It is a Tower of Babel of meanings, each having its specific characteristics, which, far from exhausting all the issues of a particular point, propose 'listening' to it from various multifaceted standpoints. These concepts do not guide this book towards a definition of landscape but towards a search for the most suitable instruments for dealing with it.

Summary:
Over the last years, coinciding with the growing social movement that aims for the introduction of a real environmental sensitivity in the European society, a new generation of architects has appeared in Spain. They plan and built using passive design strategies, use techniques to reduce both water consumption and waste production and even generate energy from the active use of renewable energies. Selected projects included: Botanical Garden of Montjuic in Barcelona and the Western Beach Promenade in Benidorm (Alicante), by Carlos Ferrater; the Spanish Pavilion at the Expo 2005 Aichi (Japan), by Farshid Moussavi and Alejandro Zaera, as well as the Spanish Pavilion at the Expo Zaragoza 2008, by Franciso J. Mangado and Florencio Manteca; the Hesperia Tower Hotel, by Alonso Balaguer Asociados and Richard Roger Partnership, and the Habitat Hotel in Barcelona, by Ruiz Geli, Vito Acconci and Ruy Ohtake; and the new head offices of Endesa and Telefónica in Madrid, both projected by Rafael de La-Hoz.

Summary:
Leland and Jane Stanford built Stanford University as a memorial to their son, Leland Stanford Jr. The original 1891 campus, conceived by Frederick Law Olmsted and executed by architects Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, balances architecture, landscapes, and the natural surroundings in a composition of classic formal beauty. Stanford is a model of university design, from the nineteenth-century Memorial Court and Main Quad to twentieth-century buildings and restorations that respect the historic campus while contributing to modern design. This architectural tour offers an insider's view of the most interesting buildings on campus and around town, from the historic designs of Memorial Court and Hoover Tower to twentieth-century interpretations of Stanford's red-tile-roof tradition in Antoine Predock's Allen Center for Integrated Systems and Polshek and Partners' Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University. It includes the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Arthur Erickson, William Turnbull, James Ingo Freed, Sir Norman Foster, and Polshek.

Summary:
For the first time in the history of our planet, more than half the population-3.3 billion people-is now living in cities. City is the ultimate guidebook to our urban centers-the signature unit of human civilization. With erudite prose and carefully chosen illustrations, this work of metatourism explores what cities are and how they work. It covers history, customs and language, districts, transport, money, work, shops and markets, and tourist sites, creating a detailed portrait of the city through history and into the future. The urban explorer will revel in essays on downtowns, suburbs, shantytowns and favelas, graffiti, skylines, crime, the theater, street food, sport, eco-cities, and sacred sites, as well as mini essays on the Tower of Babel, flash mobs, ghettos, skateboarding, and SimCity, among many others. Drawing on a vast range of examples from across the world and throughout history, City is extensively illustrated with full-color photographs, maps, and other images.

Summary:
The Prudential Center anchors the Boston skyline with its tall, gray tower. Though unassuming architecturally, it is a historical beacon, representing a midcentury moment when insurance companies such as Prudential were particularly aware of how their physical presence and civic engagement reflected upon their intangible product: financial security. Looking to New York's Rockefeller Center, the creators of the Prudential Center aspired to use real estate development as a tool toward civic achievement, reinvigorating central Boston and integrating a large complex of buildings with new infrastructure for the automobile. Architectural historian Elihu Rubin tells the full story of "The Pru", placing it within the political, economic, and architectural contexts of the period. The Prudential Center played a pivotal role in the economic redevelopment of Boston and was arguably one of the most significant urban developments of the 1950s and '60s. It is an important story, and one that provides great insight into the evolution of the modern city in postwar America.

Summary:
Anne Tyng (born 1920) explores the potentials of geometry through her architectural and teaching practices. Since the 1950s, when she worked closely with Louis Kahn and independently pioneered space-frame construction, Tyng has applied natural and numeric systems to built forms on all scales, from urban plans to domestic spaces. She believes that geometry is a metaphor for thought and the creative process - as a spatial demonstration of how the mind generates associations through the combination of pattern and chance. This volume documents a new project by the visionary architect and theorist. Commissioned by the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia, Tyng has created an installation-scale model that realizes the ambition of all of her work: to inhabit geometry. Exploring her life-long fascination with the Platonic solids, the book also features related models and documentation of past projects, including Tyng and Kahn's never-built design for City Tower in Philadelphia (1952-1956).

Summary:
In 1969 and 1970, Louis I. Kahn (1901–1974) participated in a series of interviews with a young German architectural historian, Heinrich Klotz, then a visiting professor at Yale University, and John W. Cook, who was teaching architecture at the Yale Divinity School. Louis I. Kahn in Conversation provides the first full edited transcript of these candid, illuminating interviews, which provide insights into Kahn’s philosophy of architecture. The conversations touch on many of his iconic works, including the unbuilt City Tower Project for Philadelphia, the Yale University Art Gallery, the First Unitarian Church in Rochester, and major international projects then under construction, as well as the Yale Center for British Art, Kahn’s final building, on which he was beginning work at the time. Illustrated with dozens of plans, drawings, and photographs, the book also features an introduction by Jules David Prown, the first director of the Yale Center for British Art, who recommended Kahn as its architect.

Summary:
This exploration of built and yet-to-be-realized aquatic habitats shows how water has become architecture's next frontier. Whether they're floating on top, hovering over, or submerged beneath the water, each of the more than fifty structures examined here demonstrates an innovative use of water resources. Colourfully illustrated with photographs, drawings, and plans, this global and historic sampling includes Shanghai's Bionic Tower, complete with its own lake; Biorock, an artificial reef in the Indian Ocean; an undersea hotel where scuba divers can spend a comfortable night; and Sweden's Ice Hotel, where translucent frozen walls reveal the beauty of the Northern Lights. Each of these projects demonstrates man's ability to live in the water without interfering with nature's rhythms. Together they offer reassuring proof that today's architects are finding workable and appealing solutions to the problems of shrinking resources and growing populations.
