Summary:
In "Civic Ground", Patrick Lynch traces the philosophical background to the work of his practice, Lynch Architects, one of the most interesting young architectural offices in the UK at the moment, raising wider ethical considerations about what it means to make good architecture and good cities today. Originating as a PhD, supervised by Peter Carl, Helen Mallinson and Joseph Rykwert, "Civic Ground" critiques the comparison of architecture with sculpture as a question of static form-making, arguing that parallels should be seen in the sense of dynamic rhythmic spatiality, which mediates and embeds a building into its site and civic context, reinforcing the communicative potential of architecture.

Summary:
With "Sundry Modernism", Oraib Toukan presents an informal register of modernist Palestinian architecture—an assemblage of images and stories collected from 2013 to 2015 in the cities of Nablus, Ramallah, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Jericho. Using her photographs as conversation prompts with various residents, historians, and architects, Toukan places the anecdotes collected thereby into political and historical context, weaving together narrative and critique. "Sundry Modernism" sets out to be a gesture, a nod, a salutation to, and a critique of, the lines and angles of Palestinian modernism. It is a provocation on the act of looking, and, in particular, it is a proposal for reading apolitical forms in politicized contexts.

Summary:
In this engaging new book, design theorist Louise Schouwenberg (born 1954) and designer Hella Jongerius (born 1963) examine the meaning and agency of objects, exploring how things act as mediators between people and the world both in everyday life and in the context of the museum. As technology continues to change these relationships, Schouwenberg and Jongerius thoughtfully consider the agency of our objects. Questioning the market's obsession with novelty in design, the authors try to develop criteria for recognizing true cultural innovation. What distinguishes novelty for the sake of novelty from something truly new? Designed by the legendary Irma Boom, the book itself is a love letter to creative design.

Summary:
Architects draw buildings, and the buildings they draw are usually populated by representations of the human figure — drawn, copied, collaged, or inserted — most often to suggest scale. It is impossible to represent architecture without representing the human form. This book collects more than 1,000 scale figures by 250 architects but presents them in a completely unexpected way: it removes them from their architectural context, displaying them on the page, buildingless, giving them lives of their own. They are presented not thematically or chronologically but encyclopedically, alphabetically by architect (Aalto to Zumthor). In serendipitous juxtapositions, the autonomous human figures appear and reappear, displaying endless variations of architecturally rendered human forms.

Summary:
Through eight thematic case studies that illuminate what eco art means in practice, reception, and history, Cheetham places the form in a longer and broader art-historical context. He considers a wide range of media—from painting, sculpture, and photography to artists’ films, video, sound work, animation, and installation—and analyzes the work of internationally prominent artists such as Olafur Eliasson, Nancy Holt, Mark Dion, and Robert Smithson. In doing so, Cheetham reveals eco art to be a dynamic extension of a long tradition of landscape depiction in the West that boldly enters into today’s debates on climate science, government policy, and our collective and individual responsibility to the planet.

Summary:
Happiness is an everyday term in our lives, and most of us strive to be happy. But defining happiness can be difficult. In this "Very Short Introduction", Dan Haybron considers the true nature of happiness. By examining what it is, assessing its subjective values, its importance in our lives, and how we can (and should) pursue it, he considers the current thinking on happiness, from psychology to philosophy. Illustrating the diverse routes to happiness, Haybron reflects on the growing influence of secular Western ideas in the contemporary pursuit of a good life, and considers the influence of social context on our satisfaction and well-being.
