Summary:
In the eighteenth century the Alps became the subject of a new view of nature, which crystallized in the sublime. Oscillating between fear and fascination, this sensual experience triggered a thrilling borderline experience: travelers ventured to the mountain world full of longing and projected a variety of different dreams onto the "wild nature" that had yet to be explored. To what extent has the sublime influenced architecture in the Alps, from the early days of tourism to the present? Prompted by this question, the author analyzes Alpine architecture in its historical context and offers a critical assessment of contemporary tourism. This is a book that inspires us to reflect on the future of building in the Alps and on our relationship with nature.

Summary:
A landmark study of one of Canada’s most important architectural movements The West Coast Modern House chronicles the development of Vancouver residential architecture from the 1940’s through its continued influence on contemporary practice. The post-war era in Vancouver defined what has become popularly known as the “West Coast Style.” Through the work of seminal figures such as BC Binning, Ned Pratt, Ron Thom, Fred Hollingsworth, Douglas Simpson, Barry Downs and Arthur Erickson, Vancouver architects won national awards and international recognition for their innovative house designs. This period is now seen as one of the most important in the city’s architectural history. Focusing on the years from 1940 to the mid-1960’s, The West Coast Modern House features over fifty examples of modern houses. The book is illustrated by photographs taken at the time by noted architectural photographers Graham Warrington, Selwyn Pullan and John Fulker. Essays by Greg Bellerby, Jana Tyner and Chris Macdonald elaborate on the history and innovative design strategies of the early period, through to an examination of the ways modern architectural concerns are being used by contemporary practitioners. The West Coast Modern House enables the reader to come to a greater understanding of the significance of modern residential architecture on the west coast and the persistence and relevance of its innovative design, material and construction strategies

Summary:
Vivian Manasc, one of the founders of Manasc Isaac Architects, has pioneered sustainable architecture in Canada. Her work in partnership with Indigenous communities has been her greatest inspiration, and it has transformed the very nature of her practice. Through the profound lessons of the seven Grandfather Teachings, Vivian came to understand that the process of planning and designing a building should be a circle, with the beginning and end of the story linked together. The stories Vivian tells in this book are also framed by these teachings of Courage, Love, Wisdom, Respect, Truth, Humility and Honesty, with each teaching illuminating an aspect of how working with Dene, Cree, Saulteaux, Métis, Inuit and Inuvialuit communities has influenced her design practice.

Summary:
New visions and ideas are always taking shape in the head of the architect, Sergei Tchoban. He reaches for a pencil or an ink brush, allowing us to participate in the creative process. His veduta are not merely created for their own sake, but rather serve, too, as spatial innovations for real buildings. Trained in the Classicism of his native city of St. Petersburg, the architect builds in a frank, modern style, whilst still enjoying the study of architectural ideas from previous centuries. This book follows Tchoban's trains of thought from the rivers Neva to Spree, using illustrations of his pictures and buildings, which were created in the studio of nps tchoban voss. The book shows how timeless principles for designing architectural space can flow from architectural history into contemporary architecture.
