When does the idea for the materiality of an architecture arise? What role does the context and its character play? Does the typology have an effect on the material formulation of buildings? What relevance does the function have for the choice of a material? Is the aging ability of materials taken into account in the design? And can light be understood as material? These and other questions characterize the process of designing buildings for craftmans. The models and drawings of the designs alternate with the contributions by the architects Andreas Bründler, Piero Bruno and Thomas Kröger and are as readable in connection with them as they are independent of what is written.

Each entry has been contributed by a different author, and represents a personal position as much as an attempt to frame the topic in a broader context; the issue therefore maps both a landscape of current concerns, interests, and ambitions, and also an overview of diverse positions and forms of practice. The authors of this glossary are practitioners, academics, students, lawyers, politicians, activists, and their contributions do not only seek to explore the potential of the themes put forward, but also to question the ways in which we can discuss space - as designers, as scholars, as citizens.

Summary:
''The Social (Re)Production of Architecture'' brings the debates of the 'right to the city' into today’s context of ecological, economic and social crises. Building on the 1970s' discussions about the 'production of space', which French sociologist Henri Lefebvre considered a civic right, the authors question who has the right to make space, and explore the kinds of relations that are produced in the process. In the emerging post-capitalist era, this book addresses urgent social and ecological imperatives for change and opens up questions around architecture's engagement with new forms of organization and practice. The book asks what (new) kinds of 'social' can architecture (re)produce, and what kinds of politics, values and actions are needed.

Summary:
The increasing accumulation of people in living machines without history and the challenges presented by migration and the lack of space provoke a need for new thinking and acting in public spaces. "SUPERSUIT" is an interdisciplinary experiment at the demarcation between people and space. It is a tool for poetic interventions in a range of different urban situations that invites participation and queries the relationship between people, space and city in terms of sense perception. As a marker of public space, the spontaneously arising forms of "SUPERSUIT" respond directly to the parameters of urban context. Using the means of ‘performative interventions’ "SUPERSUIT" facilitates a change in current design processes and the conceptualizing of new people/material constellations.

Nigel Peake produces meticulous hand-drawn maps and obsessively detailed pencil illustrations. Architecture plays a prominent role in his work, as is also the case with ‘There’, the result of his spending a month in an apartment in Paris while working on a series of drawings. There he soon found another drawing project when looking outside the apartment’s windows, a yard that was in fact inaccessible to him. The yard was always devoid of people, so he began to draw it using blue pencil. Each picture is a fragment of the whole, interpretations and perspectives that can be pieced together, interchanged, or float freely without context. The book includes a twelve-page insert with texts.

Summary:
With a focus on social reality and a respect for local context and vernacular craftsmanship, Liu Jiakun's work shows a rare attempt to translate and transfer traditional Chinese cultural ethos into contemporary architectural language, and represents a fine quality of intertexture between individual and collective memories. Many of these projects throw light on the reciprocal relation between Chinese people's public life and urban cultural space. Aedes exclusively presents mainly local projects in Chengdu including West Village Yard. The exhibition unfolds urban evolutionary history and the genius loci of the city, as well as demonstrates Chengdu's humanistic standpoint in practicing a new model of urbanization. It aims to open a new chapter of urban development dialogue between Germany and China.

Summary:
“Street architecture” is an ethos based not on a proposed urban theory, but on urban observation. Like a puzzle formed by pieces of various scales, it represents an array of forces, from the client’s brief to the builder’s realisation. In this book by Karin Templin the residential designs of Amsterdam-based architect Hans van der Heijden are examined in the context of housing and urban design practice, as seen in the street architecture of Florence and other European cities. Besides providing insights into Van der Heijden’s design approach, she looks at the principles of street architecture which could be of interest to urban architects and students, as well as developers and planners.

Summary:
Cities are built site by site. "Site planning" —the art and science of designing settlements on the land—encompasses a range of activities undertaken by architects, planners, urban designers, landscape architects, and engineers. This book offers a comprehensive, up-to-date guide to site planning that is global in scope. It covers planning processes and standards, new technologies, sustainability, and cultural context, addressing the roles of all participants and stakeholders and offering extensive treatment of practices in rapidly urbanizing countries. Kevin Lynch and Gary Hack wrote the classic text on the subject, and this book takes up where the earlier book left off. It can be used as a textbook and will be an essential reference for practitioners.
