Summary:
An inspiring blend of sculpture, politics and gesture, the art of Michael Rakowitz (born 1973) makes a direct engagement with the larger dilemmas of the present, with ecological solutions and civic interventions. These include projects such as paraSITE, a series of inflatable plastic homeless shelters, each of which was tailored to the occupant's needs, and which was designed to inflate by latching on to heat-exhaust ducts on the sides of buildings. In The invisible enemy should not exist—his most famous project to date—Rakowitz faithfully replicated the objects known to be missing or looted from the Iraqi National Museum during the U.S. invasion, using the cheap paper packaging of Middle Eastern import foods. This handsome volume surveys these and other recent projects.

Summary:

Summary:
Born in New York and trained in architecture, Gordon Matta-Clark is most famous for his slicing through façades, walls and floors of derelict buildings. This 'deconstructing' gesture, provocative and extreme, turns architecture into astonishing sculptures, where the mass of the building is entwined with the light and air that penetrate it. Matta-Clark's interventions are always grounded in social or political convictions. Some of his projects include opening a restaurant (Food, 1971)in the SoHo in New York, purchasing at auction fractions of unusable urban land in New York (Reality Properties: Fake Estates, 1973), dispensing oxygen to passersby in the streets of New York from a self-made cart (Fresh Air Cart, 1972), and other visionary urban projects that he conceived as a founding member of the New York-based Anarchitecture group.

Summary:
From 1972 to 1973, Gordon Matta-Clark took over fifteen hundred photographs of gra?ti in New York City. These pictures are some of the earliest documentation of an emerging art form, and are an under-recognized body of work from Matta-Clark—an artist who used the city’s crumbling infrastructure to reveal the social and political implications of architecture and urban design. This publication features every frame from every roll of film Matta-Clark shot, organized according to the sequence of contact sheets in the artist’s archive. Taken together, these pictures demonstrate Matta-Clark’s obsession with the gra?ti that had exploded across the city’s walls, subways, and buses, and show him growing bolder as he moved from photographing on the streets and subway platforms, to trespassing in outer borough train yards.
