Summary:
Chicago architect and iconoclast Stanley Tigerman has been called a "design maven who can spit venom like a snake." Though he is at times sharply critical, his ability to cut to the core of architectural discourse has opened this insular world to a broader audience. His words and theories are appealing for their candor and are backed by his long-standing architectural practice. This collection of essays, most previously unpublished, spans the course of Tigerman's career. Included are writings on the history of Chicago architecture, architectural theory, and commentary on contemporaries. Tigerman's engaging words, at times humorous and humble, at times biting and cantankerous, will captivate students and scholars as well as the general reader.

Summary:
Formerly grounded in values of craftsmanship, in the skilled making of products, ‘quality’ is now associated with the management of administrative or technical processes. Its appreciation, once based in the exercise of individual judgement and taste, is now often founded on supposedly objective systems of evaluation. Practitioners of design are under pressure to quantify ‘quality’, but it is questionable whether it is possible or even desirable to do so. This book considers this important issue, looking at how quality is defined, appreciated, evaluated, managed, and produced. With contributions from eminent architects and architectural critics, this book is for architects, academics, students and anyone interested in what architectural quality is, and how it may be achieved.

Summary:
The interdisciplinary and experimental educational ideas espoused by Black Mountain College (BMC), which was founded in North Carolina in 1933, made it one of the most innovative schools, after the Bauhaus, of the first half of the 20th century. Visual arts, economics, physics, dance, architecture and music were all taught here on an equal footing, and teachers and students lived together in a democratically organized community. The first director of the school was Josef Albers, and icons such as John Cage, Walter Gropius and Buckminster Fuller were among the many luminaries invited to teach. In consequence, BMC witnessed the development of a cutting-edge range of avant-garde concepts and ideas that still influence the art world today.
