Summary:

Summary:
German photomonteur Hannah Höch (1889–1978) is best known for her association with the Berlin Dadaists. But her life and artistic career far outlasted Dada, spanning two world wars and most of the 20th century. And at the age of 83, Höch began to look back. The result was Höch’s last-and largest, at nearly 4 x 5 feet--photo-collage, “Life Portrait,” created between 1972 and 1973. Though she did not originally set out to make an autobiographical work, the collage functions as a kind of self-portrait for the artist, looking back on her life and work while also ironically and poetically commenting on key political, social and artistic events from the previous 50 years. ''Hannah Höch: Life Portrait'' divides the monumental composition into 38 individual sections, as Höch imagined it, and offers explanatory texts and relevant quotations to complement each section.

Summary:
“All the environmental pieces, activities, slice-of-life video works, information pieces and ‘Art Tech’ shows we’ve become accustomed to owe their existence to Duchamp’s idea about a snow shovel.” So wrote Allen Kaprow back in 1973 on the powerful legacy of the artist’s readymades. Works such as Fountain (recently voted most influential artwork of the twentieth century) essentially paved the way for 100 years of “isms”, but, as Duchamp once said, eroticism was the only “ism” in which he could truly believe. Inevitably, he forms the central axis in Tate Modern’s forthcoming exhibition ‘Duchamp, Man Ray, Picabia’, which explores the inter-relationships between this unholy trinity. All three have made their mark on many generations of artists – Bruce Nauman has paid eloquent tribute to Man Ray, while Sigmar Polke has drawn inspiration from late Picabia.

Summary:
Of Indigenous origin, Peruvian photographer Martín Chambi (1891–1973) dedicated a large part of his life to photographing the Peruvian Andes, reclaiming the pre-Hispanic past through images of Inca ruins and portraits of life in Andean communities in the early 20th century. Chambi’s work brings a new perspective to photography of the time, highlighting the emerging Indigenous discourse that was starting to gain force in South America. While he was not the first to photograph Machu Picchu, Chambi was among the first Peruvian chroniclers of the Inca citadel. Drawing on Machu Picchu’s geometric forms, Chambi’s work entered a new phase in which shape, space and texture build toward more complex compositions and starker contrasts, making him an emblem of contemporary documentary photography in Peru and Latin America. This clothbound volume compiles 170 of Chambi’s black-and-white images.

Summary:
12 Ballads for Huguenot House chronicles an ambitious project by American installation artist Theaster Gates (born 1973), in which he attempts to unite two disused buildings — one in Chicago and the other in Kassel, Germany — by dismantling parts of each to reuse in the rebuilding of the other. Huguenot House, in Kassel, was built in the early nineteenth century by migrant workers, as were so many of the houses in Gates’ own neighborhood in Chicago, and today is in a state of disrepair. Gates therefore proposed a unique architectural exchange, transporting materials from a large, dilapidated building in Chicago to renovate Huguenot House, while also reusing materials from Huguenot House to reconstruct the Chicago building. In this volume, Gates documents his plans for the exchange in 12 thematic “ballads” that elucidate the project’s rich historical and architectural resonances.

Summary:
Edited by Walter Robinson, Edit DeAk and Joshua Cohn, "Art-Rite" was published in New York City between 1973 and 1978. The periodical has long been celebrated for its underground/overground position and its cutting, humorous, on-the-streets coverage and critique of the art world. Art-Rite moved easily through the expansive community it mapped out, paying homage to an emergent generation of artists, including many who were—or would soon become—the defining voices of the era. Through hundreds of interviews, reviews, statements and projects for the page—as well as artist-focused and thematic issues on video, painting, performance and artists' books—Art-Rite's sharp editorial vision and commitment to holding up the work of artists stands as a meaningful and lasting contribution to the art history of New York and beyond. All issues of Art-Rite are collected in this volume.
