"Against reason: Volume 2" is the companion publication to Tony Smith Catalogue Raisonné: Architecture, the second in a two-volume, four-book printed publication series dedicated to Tony Smith's sculpture and architecture. Edited by curator and historian James Voorhies, Against Reason gathers newly commissioned essays together with visual arts projects by practitioners and critics, including Mario Gooden, Christopher Ketcham, Marta Kuzma, Peter L'Official, R.H. Quaytman, and Jasmine Rault. Their contributions from a wide range of disciplines— from American studies, architecture, and art history to theory, design, and visual art—place Smith's architectural design work in dialogue with contemporary culture, expanding perspectives on the artist's canonical work and offering fresh twenty-first-century insights.

Summary:
The sequel to the authors’ “Are We Human?”, this provocative book is an urgent manifesto for an alternative architectural philosophy. It treats bacteria as the real architects, construction workers, maintenance crews and inhabitants of buildings. Colomina and Wigley draw on the latest research into microbes to rethink the past and possible futures of the built environment. The book explores the intimate entanglements of the microbes within bodies and buildings over the last 10,000 years, culminating in the antibiotic philosophy of contemporary architecture. The diseases of our time are diseases of the built environment. The deadly combination of rapidly declining microbial diversity and rising antibiotic-resistant bacteria is as great a threat as climate change. Hostility to bacteria has to give way to new forms of hospitality from a more symbiotic architecture that learns from bacteria, embracing them and reconnecting with soil, plants and other species. Buildings based on fear of bacteria, which is to say fear of life itself, must give way to buildings learning from models of coexistence based on bacteria themselves. The main goal of the book is to rethink the very idea of shelter in terms of forms of inclusion rather than prophylactic forms of exclusion.

Summary:
As life expectancy is extended, medical procedures continually advance and competition between health care providers intensifies, hospital design becomes increasingly important. The idea that patients benefit from their surroundings has been acknowledged for some time, but it is only recently that this concept has become the key to architectural solutions when building or redesigning hospitals and health care facilities. Drawing on over 60 examples from across the world, this volume illustrates the contemporary approach to hospital architecture. Today, architects and interior designers are striving to combat the typical sterile hospital atmosphere with innovative and exciting concepts, whilst still, of course, maintaining a high level of hygiene and functionality. The projects chosen range from new private clinics to extensions and conversions of large inner-city clinical centers and specialized hospitals.

Summary:
While lying on the beach in Nice one day, eighteen-year-old Yves Klein and his friends decided to divide the world up among themselves. Klein (1928-1962) chose the air, the cloudless sky. He remained fascinated with the element and its immaterial quality throughout his life. In the late fifties, he and the German architect Werner Ruhnau developed plans for an "architecture of air" composed of walls and roofs of air-as represented, for example, in the idea of the "Temple of the Elements" with fountains of water and fire and a café protected against the rain only by air currents. Klein associated this idea with a philosophy of optimism devoted to the creation of a paradise on earth, a Garden of Eden in which human beings would be free to pursue their own interests. The publication is the first book devoted exclusively to this aspect of Yves Klein's art. It includes reproductions of drawings and other works as well as essays and lectures on the subject. Additional articles by other authors emphasize the significance of Klein's work to the theme of the immaterial.
