Summary:
The suburbs house two-thirds of North America's population and are the subject of much debate and criticism. "Planning the new suburbia", by Avi Friedman, explores this phenomenon and proposes ways to respond to the challenge of creating affordable, adaptable, and environmentally sustainable neighbourhoods. An architect and planner, Friedman suggests new methods of design and regulation that would enable urban planners to conceive and inhabitants to adapt suburban communities and homes to their evolving needs, as a result of changing family size, an aging population, or new working conditions. Friedman surveys the evolution of urban planning, the history of "ideal" communities, the development of North American suburbs, and the theory behind flexible suburban design. Three case studies offer practical examples of his approach, and all are generously illustrated with drawings, plans, and photographs to demonstrate Friedman's ideas in action. Rather than dismissing a suburb as an unattractive, impersonal sprawl, Friedman shows how they can be modified into an affordable, sustainable, and adaptable community.

Summary:
"Architectures of ageing in place" provides curated critical perspectives, from a practice-based research point of view, of buildings that are purpose built and/or refurbished to accommodate housing and care needs of older people ageing in place in high rise/medium rise integrated communities. This book identifies design innovations, in line with policy innovations, that have been made across private and public sectors to accommodate wellbeing and quality of life of older people living in integrated communities, which continue to foster intergenerational dialogue and exchange, and advance social citizenship. Case studies from a diverse range of geographies are examined including Portugal, Singapore, India, New Zealand, UK, Sweden, Belgium and the US. Chapters are grounded in evidence-based research including substantial primary data and post-occupancy evaluation, specifically the evaluation of architecture’s ‘social performance’. Projects highlight high-rise / medium-rise as an emerging and successful typology in accommodating residential and care needs of older people.

Summary:
Libraries have existed for millennia, but today the library field is searching for solid footing in an increasingly fragmented (and increasingly digital) information environment. What is librarianship when it is unmoored from cataloging, books, buildings, and committees? In "The Atlas of New Librarianship", R. David Lankes offers a guide to this new landscape for practitioners. He describes a new librarianship based not on books and artifacts but on knowledge and learning; and he suggests a new mission for librarians: to improve society through facilitating knowledge creation in their communities. The vision for a new librarianship must go beyond finding library-related uses for information technology and the Internet; it must provide a durable foundation for the field. Lankes recasts librarianship and library practice using the fundamental concept that knowledge is created though conversation. New librarians approach their work as facilitators of conversation; they seek to enrich, capture, store, and disseminate the conversations of their communities.

Summary:
This publication considers the architecture, landscape, and town plans of thirty-one counties west of Blue Mountain and north to Lake Erie, including cities and communities big and small. The first comprehensive look at the built environment in this large and varied territory, the volume spans the years from the late eighteenth century through to the first decade of the new millennium and reveals a range of architectural surprises. The authors discuss exemplary and everyday buildings and places — Harmonist villages, Carnegie libraries, river communities, amusement parks, farms and barns, the crossroads of Breezewood, and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater among them — and canvass the scores of bridges, railroads, and inclines that cross the region's rivers, hills, and mountains. Descriptions of close to 150 of the commonwealth's small settlements, from coal patches to pike towns, capture the intense dialogue between industry and agriculture that typifies western Pennsylvania. Close to 400 illustrations, including photographs, maps, and drawings, bring the nearly 800 entries to life.
