Summary:
For millennia, the city stood out against the landscape, walled and compact. This concept of the city was long accepted as adequate for characterizing the urban experience. However, the nature of the city, both real and imagined, has always been more permeable than this model reveals. The essays in Urban Imaginaries respond to this condition by focusing on how social and physical space is conceived as both indefinite and singular. They emphasize the ways this space is shared and thus made into urban culture. Urban Imaginaries offers case studies on cities in Brazil, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, and India, as well as in the United States and France, and in doing so blends social, cultural, and political approaches to better understand the contemporary urban experience. Alev Çinar is associate professor of political science and public administration at Bilkent University, Turkey and Thomas Bender is university professor of the humanities and history at New York University.

Summary:
The essays in "The Hand and the Soul" explore the question of how ethical ideas guiding the design process - a concern for the environment or for social justice - relate to the beauty of our buildings, cities, and artworks. The book presents a range of viewpoints and does not ignore the perils of an easy association of ethics and aesthetics. Yet, the majority of contributors, among them historians, theorists, as well practicing designers and artists, argue passionately in defense of the idea that the good and the beautiful can and should be able to find a common ground in the design disciplines.

Young people ambitious to change the world and unhinge the rules holding it together, enjoying poking fun at it a little, respectfully but bravely, even daring to bring about 'revolution', but 'without anybody actually noticing', as the master Bruno Munari would have pointed out with a smile. And as our King Midas of communication and design, who would really be at home here with these people, would have said, the healthy rule that now needs to be applied much more often and with greater clarity is that of breaking them (the rules) in order to move beyond them.

Jörg Heiser, co-editor of frieze magazine, provides a sharp summary of contemporary art since Marcel Duchamp. Using many artworks as example, the author identifies some central ideas and artistic methods that seem important for understanding what fuels art's progress into the future.
