Summary:
Diplomatic Tours in the Gardens of Versailles Under Louis XIV is the first book to examine how the vast gardens of Versailles were used for these diplomatic receptions during the reign of the Sun King (1661-1715). The gardens were the final mise en scène of an elaborate ritual, which included the housing of the foreigners in Paris, their journey to Versailles, and their official audience with the king in the palace. A showcase for the achievements of royal artists, landscape architects, and hydraulic engineers, the gardens were soon regarded as one of the wonders of the modern world, proclaiming the wealth, power, and artistic taste of France and the French monarchy.

Summary:
Sarah Schrank in this book places the celebrated arrival of LA in the richer context of art controversies and political contests over modern art and art spaces in the twentieth century. Challenging historical accounts that situate the city's origins as an art center in the 1960s, she argues that debates over modernism among artists and civic leaders alike made art a charged political site as early as the 1910s. The legacy of those early battles reverberated throughout the century. Because of a rich tradition of arts education and the presence of Hollywood, Los Angeles historically hosted a talented population of contemporary artists. However, because of the snug relationship between urban aesthetics and capital investment that underscored the booster goals of the civic arts movement, modern artists were pushed out of public exhibition spaces until after World War II.

Summary:

Writing as 'the core material' of a number of visual artists but equally as a mode that exists parallel to or in service of the visual. This issue is part of a project curated by the participants of de Appel Curatorial Programme 07/08, who have hijacked the journal to encapsulate their intentions (shared, stolen or otherwise discovered). The journal explores the many intersections between circulation and storytelling.

ASLEEP IN THE AFTERNOON tells about a shy and retiring physicist whose custom it is to sleep four or five hours every day. It is a strange practice, and appears to be due to the fact that he is deaf and unhappy about this defect. But presently it transpires that his deafness is only pretended; the real reason is that he has an active and aggressive wife from whom he seeks refuge. He wears a little hearing apparatus in his ear, even when he is sleeping in the afternoon; it turns out that it is not a hearing apparatus at all, but a device with which he is conducting experiments. It produces a kind of ray which effects the brain and causes sleep accompanied by delightful dreams.

It was published in this country (England) by Scribner's and had a considerable success. It is the story of a hard-working and serious-minded chemist who devotes himself to the problem of making synthetic sugar. Not being a chemist myself, I do not know how plausible Mr Large's formulas and processes would sound to a technical man, but they are convincing to the lay reader, and by the time we see the first supply of "Sunsap" coming out of the vats we believe in it, and are prepared to see the food industry revolutionized. But we have forgotten the profit-takers. Mr Large's hard-working chemist finds himself and his process tied into knots by the financiers." Upton Sinclair
