Summary:
In an age of diminishing natural resources, architects and their clients need to know about an environmentally sustainable alternative to new construction: new life for old buildings. This book presents six case-study buildings, each more than a generation old, that were on the brink of oblivion. Mitchell Giurgola Architects worked closely with the client to determine how each project could be salvaged by incorporating updated program elements to serve a new generation of users. All six case studies present in detail how each project is analyzed, from its energy use and curtain-wall performance to its mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, and structural stability. The buildings often expand in size, with a seamless melding of new and old. Contemporary curtain walls not only improve building performance, but also lend a fresh aesthetic appeal. The results are born-again buildings created for a fraction of the cost and consuming far fewer materials than, a new facility built from scratch. Today, our cities and suburbs are peppered with buildings of the same era as those profiled here that are on the brink of failure and are excellent candidates for rebirth. Mitchell Giurgola documents a new, more sustainable approach to design and construction that builds on the past, and makes the old better than new.

Summary:
Folding is a relatively new trend in architecture. It is a very playful way of designing which offers free reign to spontaneity and surprise in the design process. The book "Folding Architecture – spatial, structural and organizational diagrams" offers insights into the possibilities of folding as well as results of the research conducted by the architectural faculty of the TU in Delft. The technique of folding in contemporary architecture is vividly illustrated with a survey of much-discussed concepts, projects and buildings in which this technique was applied. Now back in print.

Summary:
Part of the Architectural Papers series, The Middle East explores the architecture of a nearly paradoxical region. Both the cradle of culture, where much remains of thousands of years of human society, the Middle East is also an area of great flux in contemporary history. This volume explores this dichotomy in three sections. The first, “Beyond the View,” investigates notions of the Middle Eastern architecture through a comparative study of different parts of the Arab world. “Case Studies” focuses on three exceptionally different cities—Beirut, Amman, and Doha—through an investigation of recent and future building projects. The final chapter, “Limits” looks at the architectural practices of countries that constitute the geographic, cultural, and political limits of the region: Israel, Turkey, and Iran.

Summary:
The People's Republic of China is currently the largest market for architectural services in the world, and its cities — sites of the greatest economic migration in modern history — are rapidly being transformed into rival centers for global trade and commerce. "On the edge : ten architects from China" is a critical anthology on new architecture in China, the first book of its kind devoted to the development and maturation of an indigenous approach to modern architecture and urbanism in China. Focusing on the work of ten young design firms based in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, "On the edge" documents the rise of a new aesthetic, the evolution of contemporary architectural practice, and the irresistible, global aspirations of an emerging avant-garde.Included in the book are completed buildings, proposed projects, and urban master plans by Gary Chang of Edge HK, Rocco Yim, Zi and Ming Zhang of Original Design Studio, Li Hu of Open Architecture Studio, Ai We Wei, Qingyun Ma of MADA, Jiakun Liu, and Yung Ho Chang, who is the present dean of the Architecture School at MIT.
