Summary:
Eadweard Muybridge, one of the great pioneer-innovators of the 19th century, is a familiar figure to students of art history, photography, and cinema. Best known for the photographs of horses and other animals in motion that he made in the 1870s and '80s, Muybridge was the first person to use photography to freeze rapid action for analysis and study. He devised a method for photographing episodes of behavior using a series of cameras, producing some of the most famous sequential photographs ever made. These pictures, the first successful photographs of rapidly moving subjects, revolutionized expectations of what photography could reveal about the natural world, and ultimately led to the invention of the motion picture in the mid-1890s. "Time stands still" is the catalogue that accompanies an exhibition celebrating Muybridge's work. Though the instantaneous photography movement stands as a crucial event in the progression of photography to motion pictures, this exhibition represents the first major organized treatment of the subject. Opening in spring 2003 at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University and touring through 2004, it combines an examination of the artist's career in motion photography with a survey of early attempts to photograph moving subjects.

Summary:
In spring 2000, as the Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor at Yale University, Zaha Hadid led an intense studio on the topic of the contemporary art center. Such centers are proliferating across the United States and around the world, yet their architectural form remains abstract and open-ended, subject to continual reinterpretation. Hadid’s studio - one leader, three studio assistants, twelve students, and numerous critics - interpreted the contemporary art center as an invitation to experiment with new forms of public space. Specific contemporary works of art became the programme for a series of radical architectural concepts that expand the space of the art, taking on the scale and materiality of full-scale architectural constructs. The studio - and this volume - was divided into ten segments, addressing such issues as programme analysis, spatialities, system conditions, current contemporary art centers, building types, sites, and linearities. Each segment is represented by original renderings, including computer images. The accompanying text is drawn from transcripts of the studio reviews by the critics: Robert A. M. Stern, dean of the Yale School of Architecture; Terence Riley and Paola Antonelli of the Museum of Modern Art; and architects, critics, and scholars Jeffrey Kipnis, Thomas Krens, Sulan Kolatan, William MacDonald, Fabian Marcaccio, Rebeca Mendez, Paola Sanguinetti, Joseph Giovannini, Marc Cousins, Greg Lynn, and Gail Witwer.

Summary:
Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) achieved overnight fame in the late 1920s with the first publication of his photographs of plants. Those photographs, which revealed the inner structures of the organic forms, immediately made him a pioneer of New Objectivity, an innovative movement in art and photography of the 1920s and 1930s. Blossfeldt, however, was neither a trained photographer nor a botanist. He was a sculptor and art professor who did his photographic work to generate teaching material for his students. The publication of this book is the result of an extraordinary event, the 1997 discovery in Blossfeldt’s estate of sixty-one previously unknown collages, in virtually mint condition, of photographic contact prints arranged on large cardboard sheets. Blossfeldt apparently used these to study the relation and similarity of the photographs and to compare them graphically and aesthetically. On some Blossfeldt had made marks or handwritten notations. Others show lines for cropping. The collages, published here for the first time, unveil a hidden treasure of modern photography and cast fresh light on the systematic approach Blossfeldt used in his photographic studies. All collages are reproduced in four colours. Introducing the book is an essay by Swiss art historian Ulrike Meyer-Stump, a contributing curator to the exhibitions at the Kunsthaus in Zurich.

Summary:
This volume presents the ''Circle of Doing Research'' : a model to get you started in art and design research. Conceived within the contextual setting of the art school, it is holistic, multidisciplinary and prioritizes practice. It consists of six actions. The basis of the circle is formed by the following: research by making, research of context and participatory research, where information, prototypes, encounters and experiences are gathered and produced. The remaining three actions are concerned with documenting research, publicizing research and reflecting on research. The ''Circle of Doing Research'' is an open, accessible and non-linear model. Each action can be an entry point, whether you want to start with material experiments, conversations with others, or in the library. All actions are connected and inform each other which encourages a process of iteration and constant reflection. The ''Circle'' can be enriched with methods, sources and focal points according to specific disciplines and needs. The book contains research trajectories of art and design students throughout, illustrating the rich possibilities to be uncovered in the unfolding of a research project. This illuminating model can be useful to all, from those beginning to learn about research in art and design to more advanced practitioners.

Summary:
After the economic disaster of the Great Leap Forward that claimed tens of millions of lives from 1958–1962, an aging Mao Zedong launched an ambitious scheme to shore up his reputation and eliminate those he viewed as a threat to his legacy. The Cultural Revolution's goal was to purge the country of bourgeois, capitalistic elements he claimed were threatening genuine communist ideology. Young students formed the Red Guards, vowing to defend the Chairman to the death, but soon rival factions started fighting each other in the streets with semiautomatic weapons in the name of revolutionary purity. As the country descended into chaos, the military intervened, turning China into a garrison state marked by bloody purges that crushed as many as one in fifty people. ''The Cultural Revolution: A People's History, 1962–1976'' draws for the first time on hundreds of previously classified party documents, from secret police reports to unexpurgated versions of leadership speeches. After the army itself fell victim to the Cultural Revolution, ordinary people used the political chaos to resurrect the market and hollow out the party's ideology. By showing how economic reform from below was an unintended consequence of a decade of violent purges and entrenched fear, ''The Cultural Revolution'' casts China's most tumultuous era in a wholly new light.

Summary:
One day in 1973, acting on a whim, Daniel Meadows and Martin Parr, final year photography students at Manchester Polytechnic, attended a Granada TV open day to view the newly reconstructed set of Coronation Street. There they learned that location filming of the popular soap opera was shortly to end. This was because wholesale regeneration of Salford’s housing stock was sweeping away the ranks of Victorian terraced streets and their paving of stone setts, the very features which defined how a TV audience expected ‘the north’ to look. If the drama were to continue to look like itself, exterior scenes would henceforth be shot only at the studio. This discovery inspired Meadows and Parr to go looking for a former classic ‘Street’-like location to document before the bulldozers moved in. They settled on June Street in Ordsall, twenty houses which were still fully occupied. Over eight weeks or so, using the college Hasselblad and a bright photoflood lightbulb (screwed into the ceiling socket), they photographed each household — adults, children, dogs, cats, the budgie and, in one case, a tortoise — sitting together in their front rooms. When it was all done, they invited everyone to take part in a group photograph.

Summary:
Cities around the world are striving to be global. This book tells the story of one of them, and in so doing raises questions which are essential for all cities. These questions concern identity, place, and political responsibility in the changing geographies of our times. The book also tells the story of the rise of a new class, of deepening inequality, and of the geographical imaginations that are mobilised to legitimate the increasing dominance of these powerful metropoles. In so doing, it sets the global city in its wider geographical and political context. World City focuses its account on London, one of the greatest of these global cities. London is a city of delight and of creativity, of the generation of vast wealth and of acute poverty. It also presides over a country increasingly divided between North and South and over a neo-liberal form of globalisation the deregulation, financialisation and commercialisation of all aspects of life that results in an evermore unequal world.World City explores how we can understand this complex narrative and asks a question that should be asked of any city: what does this place stand for? This book will appeal to students of human geography, politics and sociology as well as to the general reader.

Summary:
In 1969, shortly after moving to Detroit with wife and partner Lorraine Nybakken, Fredy Perlman and a group of kindred spirits purchased a printing press from a Chicago dealer, transported it, in parts, back to Detroit in their cars and the Detroit Printing Co-op was born. Operating between 1969 and 1980 out of southwest Detroit, the Co-op was the site for the printing of the first English translation of Guy Debord’s "Society of the Spectacle" and journals like "Radical America," produced by the Students for a Democratic Society; books such as "The Political Thought of James Forman" printed by the League of Revolutionary Black Workers; and the occasional broadsheet, such as Judy Campbell’s stirring indictment, "Open letter from ‘white bitch’ to the black youths who beat up on me and my friend."F redy Perlman was not a printer or a designer by training, but was deeply engaged in the ideas, issues, processes and materiality of printing. While at the Detroit Printing Co-op, he radically rethought the possibilities of print by experimenting with overprinting, collage techniques, different kinds of papers and so on. Behind the calls to action and class consciousness written in his publications, there was an innate sense of the politics of design, experimentation and pride of craft.

Summary:
Overcrowding, noise and air pollution, long commutes and lack of daylight can take a huge toll on the mental well-being of city-dwellers. With mental healthcare services under increasing pressure, could a better approach to urban design and planning provide a solution? The restrictions faced by city residents around the world during the COVID-19 pandemic has brought home just how much urban design can affect our mental health – and created an imperative to seize this opportunity. ''Restorative cities'' explores a new way of designing cities, one which places mental health and wellness at the forefront. Establishing a blueprint for urban design for mental health, it examines a range of strategies – from sensory architecture to place-making for creativity and community – and brings a genuinely evidence-based approach that will appeal to designers and planners, health practitioners and researchers alike - and provide compelling insights for anyone who cares about how our surroundings affect us. Written by a psychiatrist and public health specialist, and an environmental psychologist with extensive experience of architectural practice, this much-needed work will prompt debate and inspire built environment students and professionals to think more about the positive potential of their designs for mental well-being.
