Summary:
Architects W.G. Clark and Charles Menefee III, inspired by the "thin shacks and sheds of insubstantial beauty" of the Southern vernacular building tradition, are known for structures that are at once modest, rigorous, and economical in detail. They blend the ease and informality of the architecture of the historic South with the elegance of end-of-the-century modernism. This balance between continuity and change is evident throughout their work. This monograph of 13 projects--eight built, five unbuilt--reveals the architects' ideas and intentions while reflecting the spirit they bring to each design. Projects such as Middleton Inn, Croffead House, Lucy Daniels Foundation, Charleston Bus Stops, and 8 Bedon's Alley are presented through duotone photographs and drawings, which exemplify the simplicity and rigor of the architects' work. The author's critical analysis of each project highlights associations to vernacular buildings and the local historic context. Clark and Menefee dissolved their professional practice last year, making this book the complete and only overview of their work.

Summary:
In "Each Wild Idea", Geoffrey Batchen explores a wide range of photographic subjects, from the timing of the medium's invention to the various implications of cyberculture. Along the way, he reflects on contemporary art photography, the role of the vernacular in photography's history, and the Australianness of Australian photography. The essays all focus on a consideration of specific photographs--from a humble combination of baby photos and bronzed booties to a masterwork by Alfred Stieglitz. Although Batchen views each photograph within the context of broader social and political forces, he also engages its own distinctive formal attributes. In short, he sees photography as something that is simultaneously material and cultural. In an effort to evoke the lived experience of history, he frequently relies on sheer description as the mode of analysis, insisting that we look right at--rather than beyond--the photograph being discussed. A constant theme throughout the book is the question of photography's past, present, and future identity.

Summary:
Since their inception with New York's Crystal Palace Exhibition in the mid-nineteenth century, world's fairs have introduced Americans to “exotic” pleasures such as belly dancing and the Ferris Wheel; pathbreaking technologies such as telephones and X rays; and futuristic architectural, landscaping, and transportation schemes. Billed by their promoters as “encyclopedias of civilization,” the expositions impressed tens of millions of fairgoers with model environments and utopian visions. Setting more than 30 world’s fairs from 1853 to 1984 in their historical context, the authors show that the expositions reflected and influenced not only the ideals but also the cultural tensions of their times. As mainstays rather than mere ornaments of American life, world’s fairs created national support for such issues as the social reunification of North and South after the Civil War, U.S. imperial expansion at the turn of the 20th-century, consumer optimism during the Great Depression, and the essential unity of humankind in a nuclear age.

Summary:
In a career that has spanned more than forty years, Matthew Carter has designed many of the typefaces that we see every day in and on publications, books, signs, and screens. Carter's celebrated typefaces include such stalwarts as Galliard, Mantinia, and Verdana. In 1975, he created the now-pervasive Bell Centennial specifically for use in phone books. Publications including Sports Illustrated, the Daily News, Wired, and the Washington Post, along with cultural institutions such as the Walker Arts Center and The Victoria – Albert Museum, have all commissioned Carter fonts. "Typographically speaking: the art of Matthew Carter" celebrates the work of this legendary type designer who entered the field in the days of hand-cut punches and hot-metal type, and has continued to innovate through the eras of photocomposition and digital design. Essays discuss the form of his work, his position and use of typographic history, and his technological innovation. All of his fonts are reproduced in full for reference, and illustrations place his designs in context.

Summary:
The first of a unique series of translations of Scamozzi's L'Idea della Architettura Universale. The northern Italian architect, Vincenzo Scamozzi, (1548-1616) designed a number of important palaces, villas and churches in and around Vicenza, Padua and Venice. In addition, he completed a comprehensive study of ancient classical architecture. including the possibilities for its application in a modern context. The first edition of the book was published in 1615. Scamozzi distinguishes himself from his predecessors Vitruvius and Palladio by the scientific approach he follows in his treatise, in which his own designs appear as examples. The clear and detailed account of the historical and geographical background to the principles of classical architecture led to the book's wide popularity in the Northern Netherlands throughout the 17th century. Scamozzi's text was regarded as the most suitable manual for mastering the rules of building, and his theories had a considerable impact upon classical architecture in the Dutch Golden Age.

Summary:
Japan is becoming a popular travel destination for more and more architects today. With its wide variety of architecture, it is both a source of fascination and inspiration. Over a number of years, the review Detail has been consistently documenting the construction activities which have taken place in Japan, and this book draws on the best of their experience and connections to present and analyse with plans and details the most interesting buildings from various architectural trends in contemporary Japan, including Ando's Museum for Contemporary Art in Naoshima, Toyo Ito's Mediathek, a residential building by Kazuyo Sejima, and a temple gallery in Kyoto by Takashi Yamaguchi. Introductory essays discuss the developments in Japanese architecture, and together with portraits of not only well-known Japanese architects and offices, but also young offices such as Atelier Bow Wow, this volume provides a stimulating discussion of current Japanese building in the context of traditional architecture.

Summary:
An extraordinary collection of eighty pictures from the Alinari Archives located in Florence, Italy makes up a never-before-published sequence of images including portraits, landscapes, and rituals providing a rare entry into traditional 19th-century Japan. Felice Beato was one of the first Western photographers to enter Japan when the country first opened its borders (1853); he revealed to the Western world a country preserved in time and never seen before. In 1863 he moved to Yokohama and opened a photography school, the School of Yokohama. The photos of the book preserve the original photographic prints, manually colored black-and-white prints, that truly embody the spirit of that period. Images feature fascinating portraits of women in kimonos, geishas, samurai warriors, and interiors of Japanese homes and gardens as well as scenes of everyday life including tea ceremonies or the theater. Each photo is accompanied by text providing historical, anthropological, and artistic context.

Summary:
The exhibition “Shooting Time. Pompeii and its Surroundings” by Claudio Sabatino allows us to reflect, in a museum such as the Archaeological Museum of Naples, on the tricky issue of the relationship between archaeological context, landscape and the finds that come from them. Preventing the gradual process of change, the result of human interaction, of the remaining landscape would be pure utopia. That it also generates a culture of respect, which goes from a deep knowledge of history and allows for conscious protection, is another. This catalogue allows us to examine how in many symbolic places symbol (Baths of Caracalla, Pompeii, Naples, The Phlegraean Fields), there is an often antithetical ‘before’ and ‘after’, which reveal, on one side, the yielding of a conservation effort in the face of building expansion policies and, on the other, from the fact that in Italy there has been greater attention on the exhibition sites rather than on the territory.

Summary:
This highly visual introduction to all things typographic unravels the story of the fonts that we encounter every day. It opens with an A-Z of a range of significant fonts, chosen to represent the typographic spectrum. As well as looking at each font’s historical context and design ethos, a pangram will showcase the entire alphabetic range of each font, as well as relaying a pithy message about the font’s history, purpose or use. A chapter on Anatomy will deconstruct the letters of the English alphabet to reveal the anatomical structure of the letterforms, explaining terms such as bowl, crossbar, finial, ligature and spur. An examination of the typographer’s toolkit explains how type can be manipulated and arranged on the page to create an arresting design. The final chapter examines the myriad signs, symbols and punctuation marks that litter the printed page, created to endow printed text with additional meaning and nuance.

Summary:
Swiss designer and artist Karl Gerstner (1930–2017) had a significant influence on typography and the history and development of postwar graphic design. "Designing Programmes" is one of his most important and influential works. It was first published in 1964, and reissued in a new design by Lars Müller Publishers in 2007; both editions are now rare (the first almost completely unavailable). Now, Lars Müller reissues the book with its original design. Here, across four essays, Gerstner provides a basic introduction to his design methodology and suggests a model for design in the early days of the computer era. Gerstner's innovation was to propose a rule set or system defined by the designer that would determine all aesthetic decisions for a given product: for example, a logo might also function as a layout grid system or inspire a font. Today the book is especially topical in the context of current developments in computational design.
