- This group of correspondence, clippings and a copy of a resolution was compiled by the architect, Lloyd Wright, for his own record while he was persuing the commission for the Los Angeles Municipal Airport, Mines Field, California. While Wright received the approval of the Municipal Art Commission, his design was ultimately rejected by the Airport Committee in favour of a Spanish Colonial design. The correspondence is composed of carbon copies and mimeographs of a letter sent to the Municipal Art Commission requesting that the commission consider his design. There are several copies of this letter, probably because it was sent to individual committee members and a copy was made of each letter. Of the newspaper clippings, three relate to the Mines Field project; the most significant is a half-page spread with photographs of both Lloyd Wright's project and the successful Spanish Colonial design. Also on the same page are photographs of four of people involved in the commission, including Lloyd Wright, a councilman, a member of the art commission, and the airport manager. The two other Mines Field clippings announce the completion of an aircraft factory at Mines Field and the completion of the municipal airport within thirty days. The office identified the project number as 7302. This project consisted of a ten bedroom home for Toronto businessman Alfred W. Billes, who was part of the Canadian Tire founding family and part owner at this time. The extravagant home included tennis courts, a pool, an indoor atrium with gardens, staff quarters, a library, and a piano room, among others. Built in the Bridle Path neighbourhood, the home was designed in the modernist style with two terraced balconies facing the street. Following the completion of the project, A.W. Billes sued the firm of Parkin Partnership Architects Planners over dissatisfaction with the construction, a case that was appealed all the way to the Supreme Court. Parkin lost the case in 1984 and had to pay A.W. Billes approximately $125,000. The project is recorded through drawings, photographs, slides, a project painting, and textual records dating from 1973-1984. The drawings are a mix of original sketches and construction drawings. The photographs and slides show the completed project. File documents a competition proposal by Cedric Price, in collaboration with Archigram, Per Kartvedt, and Tony Dugdale for a combined university / community centre, in Trondheim, Norway. The programme called for a congress centre, hotel rooms, sauna, and swimming pool. The final design proposal is described in the file: "Due to economy achievable in warming and ventilation through large scale air movements it was found possible to enclose 3 conventional partitions within an enormous 'greenhouse'. Giant snow sweepers on the roof combined with heated central 'open' swimming pools are additional artificial environment manipulators'. Conceptual sketches explore the development of the site in section. Relationships between areas are shown in color: "delight" in blue; "servicing" in yellow; and "escape" in orange. Drawings also include diagrammatic plans and sections. Many original conceptual sketches by both Cedric Price and Archigram are included within the textual records.
