Summary:
''Drone'' brings together researchers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds whose work seeks to understand and represent the nature and extent of drone operations. The book investigates the relationship between drone technology, cultural production, and forms of surveillance and violence. It analyses and speculates upon how these technological developments affect life in cities. "Drone" is the the first volume of "Unmanned. Architecture and Security Series", a research and publishing project which examines architecture's role in the construction of the contemporary security regimes. The series discusses the consequences of the civilian appropriation of military technologies, and sets an agenda for design professionals to engage on a technological, cultural, and political level by putting forward forms of resistance.

Summary:
Psycho Buildings: Artists and Architecture marks the fortieth anniversary of London's Hayward gallery--itself an architectural icon, and one of the few remaining examples of the 1960s Brutalist style. The exhibition brings together the work of artists--including Atelier Bow-Wow, Michael Beutler, Los Carpinteros, Gelitin, Mike Nelson, Ernesto Neto, Tobias Putrih, Tomas Saraceno, Do-Ho Suh and Rachel Whiteread--who create habitat-like structures and architectural environments that are mental and perceptual spaces as much as physical ones. The works in this book revisit and reanimate the history of Modernist design while reminding us that built spaces can be defined in social, political, psychological, physical and aesthetic terms. An invaluable exploration of this contemporary trend, the volume includes essays by Hayward Director Ralph Rugoff, Jane Rendell and Brian Dillon. In addition, each artist profile includes a text by a different author, including Francis McKee, Tumelo Mosaka, Midori Matsui, Brian Dillon, Paulo Herkenhoff, David Greene, Francesco Manacorda, Tom Morton, Miwon Kwon and Iain Sinclair.

Summary:
As focus shifts to ''no net land take'' city regeneration approaches one of the main traditional elements of architecture- the roof- is gaining renewed prominence. This book provides a survey of worldwide experiences of city rooftop re-use strategies such as building-on and integrating new volumes within the existing buildings. Twenty-four case studies illustrate a multiplicity of projects that innovate on traditional typologies by offering multiple ways of living, working and using public services in the city. They all share a symbiotic method that exploits the extraordinariness of the ''top condition'' offered by the roof to foster a subtle change in the whole building's urban identity. They test new technologies for light and quick construction methods in order to deal with structural constraints and the needs of inhabitants. City roofscape redesign belongs to an adaptive attitude based on knowledge of the dynamic process of transformation of the physical realm, far removed from regressive preservation-only behavior. It represents a remarkable way of coping with urban regeneration issues.

Summary:
In this book, Edwin Heathcote looks at the cultural impact of street furniture using photography as a measure of how these things have become indispensable components of the cityscape. Based mainly in and on London – but including New York, Paris and Budapest – Heathcote uses history, personal reflection and the lenses of photographers to examine the status of these urban artefacts in both the contemporary imagination and the city streets themselves. It looks at the changing landscape of the cityscape and the way in which street furniture has been adapted to address new technologies, the culture of surveillance and shifts in taste, orthodoxy and material culture. On the Street looks at the language of street furniture reflected through the gaze of photography and contemporary culture. It is a book about the elements of the streetscape which can exert an increasing impact on our interaction with the cities we inhabit.

Summary:
Author Joe Day shows how institutions of discipline and exhibition have replaced malls and office towers as the anchor tenants of U.S. cities. Prisons and museums, though diametrically opposed in terms of public engagement, class representation, and civic pride, are complementary structures, employing related spatial and visual tactics to secure and array problematic citizens or priceless treasures. Our recent demand for museums and prisons has encouraged architects to be innovative with their design, and experimental with their scale and distribution through our cities. Contemporary museums are the petri dishes of advanced architectural speculation; prisons remain the staging grounds for every new technology of constraint and oversight.

Summary:
This book provides one of the first comprehensive discussions of contemporary landscape architecture practice across the Asian region. Bringing together established designers, writers, and thinkers with those of the new generation, Jillian Walliss and Heike Rahmann explore what it means to design, do business, and think about nature, space, and urbanism with an Asian sensibility. Through a tripartite structure of Continuum, Interruption, and Speed, ''The big Asian book of landscape architecture'' develops ways for conceiving design around these three characteristics that simultaneously influence an Asian practice. A dynamic structure allows readers to dip into content, rather than progress in a linear manner. Each section begins with a positioning essay, which offer theoretical, cultural, and political contextualisation for the more focused academic writing, shorter reflections, practice interviews, photo essays and design projects which are interwoven in a unique graphic design. Featuring over eighty design projects, ''The big Asian book of landscape architecture's'' significance extends well beyond Asia, offering fresh perspectives for a field that has traditionally been dominated by North American and European influences.

This book examines together the linked philosophies of the different arts of preserving and uncovering the past: the restoration of buildings, conservation of works of art, and editing of literary works to retrieve their original or intended texts. By investigating a series of recent crises in each of these areas, this publication shows how their underlying justifications relate closely to one another.
