Summary:
Landscape and Energy discusses and pictures the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy-easily one of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century. While explaining the driving forces behind the exponential growth of our energy use, this volume also visually compares the spatial footprints of all relevant energy sources, allowing its readers to see at a glance the importance of renewable energy for our world's future. But even as Landscape and Energy acknowledges the breathtaking task that lies ahead for our designers, planners and politicians, it elaborates the options and choices for an emerging "postfossil landscape" through a variety of case studies.

Summary:
Collaboration with the greatest botanists of his time, an instinctive humanitarianism, and a natural ingenuity in landscape design combined to make Thomas Jefferson a pioneer in American landscape architecture. Frederick D. Nichols and Ralph E. Griswold, in this close study of Jefferson’s many notes, letters, and sketches, present a clear and detailed interpretation of his extraordinary accomplishments in the field. "Thomas Jefferson, Landscape Architect" investigates the many influences on — and of — the Jeffersonian legacy in architecture. Jefferson’s personality, friendships, and convictions, complemented by his extensive reading and travels, clearly influenced his architectural work. His fresh approach to incorporating foreign elements into domestic designs, his revolutionary approach to relating the house to the surrounding land, and his profound influences on the architectural character of the District of Columbia are just a few of Jefferson’s contributions to the American landscape. Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century maps, plans, and drawings, as well as pictures of the species of trees that Jefferson used for his designs, generously illustrate the engaging narrative in "Thomas Jefferson, Landscape Architect".

Summary:
The leading landscape gardener of later Georgian England, Humphry Repton (17521818), was innovative and prolific, undertaking more than four hundred commissions during his thirty-year career. Repton worked for a wide variety of clients, notably the dukes of Portland and Bedford, and on many kinds of sites throughout England. He also promoted his profession in extensive writings about the theory and practice of landscape gardening. This book examines Repton's career and work in the context of the changing human geography of his time. Fully illustrated with many previously unpublished pictures, the book charts Repton's vision of England, how his style changed and persisted over time and from place to place, how he influenced his profession, and how he fashioned a social identity for himself. Stephen Daniels frames Repton's life and work in terms of five domains: the road, the county, the picturesque landscape, the aristocratic estate, and the urban periphery. Focusing on the way these domains shaped Repton's career and how he in turn attempted to shape them, Daniels examines in depth more than twenty representative commissions that delineate Repton's social and spatial theory of landscape. The author casts new light not only on the work of Humphry Repton but also on the role of landscape itself in English culture and society.
