Summary:
Bringing together imaginative architectural approaches with texts by key contemporary thinkers, the two-part Informal Market Worlds explores new ways to interrupt the dominant logics of neoliberal governance. The Reader includes expert essays on urban informality, bottom-up economies and informal architectures as harbingers of social and political change. Offering a global perspective on the conflicted realities of informal marketplaces--from survival activities of the urban poor to transnational clandestine trade networks--these analyses reveal how informality has become a political instrument in the struggles around global market integration.

While Mies van der Rohe’s pavilion at the International Exposition in Barcelona in 1929 went unnoticed by most of the visitors to the fairgrounds, contemporary critics enthusiastically hailed it as the most convincing statement of the Modern Age. This book presents 100 selected texts about this much discussed building, written then and now: from the opening speech by the Spanish king, to newspaper articles and private letters, voices of contemporary architects, architecture critics and historians, and even a text by artist Ai Weiwei, who created an installation in the outdoor area of the pavilion in 2010.

Summary:
How to Be A Happy Architect explores the work of Bauman Lyons Architects in the context of ways of "being" within the profession. This subject is broken down into three chapters, written by one of the practice’s directors, and CABE Commissioner, Irena Bauman. These explore subjects such as the ways of working as a team and in partnership with clients; the power struggle between art and architecture; and the significance of awards and prizes in contemporary architecture. The writting within each chapter constitutes a chain of thought that is sparked off by a "provocation" from sources as diverse as Ayn Rand, Socrates and press coverage of contemporary buildings like the Scottish Parliament. Further, the book illustrates many projects and gives an overview of the breadth and variety of the work that Bauman Lyons undertakes, including cultural, healthcare and residential buildings. How to Be A Happy Architect provides both a profile of one of today’s most vibrant practices, and a challenge to the reader to explore outside his or her usual approach to, and philosophy of, architecture.

Summary:
"S,M,L,XL" combines a critical selection of the remarkable visionary design work produced over the past 20 years by the Dutch firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture (O.M.A.) and its acclaimed founder, Rem Koolhaas, with a wide variety of startling and poetic writings. The inventive collaboration between Koolhaas and designer Bruce Mau is a graphic overture that weaves together architectural projects, photos and sketches, diary excerpts, personal travelogues, fairy tales, and fables, as well as critical essays on contemporary architecture and society. The book’s title is also its framework: projects and essays are arranged according to scale. While Small and Medium address issues ranging from the domestic to the public, Large focuses on what Koolhaas calls 'the architecture of Bigness.' Extra Large features projects at the urban scale, along with the seminal essay 'What Ever Happened to Urbanism?' and other studies of the contemporary city. Running throughout the book is a 'dictionary' of an adventurous new Koolhaasian language - an assemblage of definitions, commentaries, and quotes from hundreds of literary, cultural, artistic, and architectural references.
