Summary:
Combining civic architecture projects with contributions by writers, historians and artists ranging from Dan Graham to Fran Lebowitz, this publication constructs a dialogue with the legacy of the late architect and longtime Cooper Union professor Diane Lewis (1951-2017). Lewis' pedagogy defined Cooper Union's architecture departure from the 1970s to the mid-2000s. Here, architectural historians Barry Bergdoll and Daniel Sherer converse about the themes and approach in her pedagogical style and thinking. Architects, former students, colleagues and friends generate projects as a continuous discourse with Lewis' pedagogy, carrying her legacy into contemporary dialogues.

Summary:
This fifth volume in Lars Müller’s Architect’s Studio series is dedicated to the Nairobi-based architects Cave_bureau. This acclaimed collective of architects and researchers-- the first Kenyan firm to appear at the Venice Architecture Biennale, in 2021-- explores the synergy between architecture, urbanism and nature, and curates performative events of resistance within caves along the Great Rift Valley in East Africa. The cave, as physical space and as metaphor, is seen by the collective as a provocation to test the limits of contemporary architecture. Here, Cave_bureau’s Stella Mutegi and Kabage Karanja describe eight of their projects. Photographs are accompanied by essays posing questions about the future of architecture in the age of the Anthropocene, the effects of colonial extraction and erasure on African architecture, as well as the specificity of each continent and each geographic space.

Summary:
A look at how nature serves as a source of inspiration for contemporary architecture. Nature has always furnished stimulating ideas for the design of architecture, and the use of animal forms in contemporary architecture—whether to endow a project with symbolism, find a functional solution, or simply for aesthetic reasons—has become a commonplace practice. Inspired by Nature: Animals focuses on specific analogies, comparing and contrasting techniques and materials used in animal constructions with examples of human architecture. It gathers together the work of two dozen architects who have drawn on such structures as tortoise and snail shells, spiders’ webs and birds’ nests, beehives and beaver lodges.

Summary:
Informal markets are a central feature of the 21st century's first tumultuous years. Both part of and response to the homogenizing forces of globalization, they constitute a volatile shadow system of heterogeneous micro-locations. Informal Market Worlds maps this new kind of urban system emerging from ongoing deregulations and realignments. Bringing together imaginative architectural approaches with texts by key contemporary thinkers, the two-part Informal Market Worlds explores new ways to interrupt the dominant logics of neoliberal governance. With groundbreaking research, the hefty Atlas includes 73 case studies, in locations ranging from Kabul's post-conflict Bush Bazaar to Arizona's Snow Birds hipster markets. Offering a global perspective on the conflicted realities of informal marketplaces--from survival activities of the urban poor to transnational clandestine trade networks--these analyses reveal how informality has become a political instrument in the struggles around global market integration.
