Summary:
This publication explores the rich story of Upper Lawn’s construction and inhabitation by revisiting the small book Alison Smithson created with architect Enric Miralles in 1986. Here, the book’s contents, including diary entries, photographs, drawings, and references, are republished in full in a new design, expanded by extensive new materials from the Smithson archive. Together, these documents describe the building’s lived life, picturing it as a ledger of wear and use, a means of private and professional exploration, and a lens onto the passage of time inside and outside its walls. This book places Upper Lawn at the heart of the Smithsons’ practice, revealing its own quiet philosophy and ethics of architecture. This new book has been edited in collaboration with the Smithson Family Collection and includes an introductory essay by Paul Clarke, Professor of Architectural Design at the Belfast School of Architecture.

Summary:
What is space? How can we experience it with the senses, how understand and rethink its urban and cultural dimensions? These questions stand at the beginning of the work of Grüntuch Ernst architects. They meet the complex requirements of building today by going back to traditional simplicity while producing innovative and ingenious technical solutions--and yet they return, time and again, to the central question of space. The new monograph offers a review of Grüntuch Ernst's award-winning projects from the past ten years as well as more recent works and successful competition entries such as the German School in Madrid and the conversion of the former Jewish Girls' School in Berlin into a venue for art and culture.

Summary:
Peter Latz and Partners specialize in a contemporary, intelligent use of alternative technologies and the regeneration of industrial wastelands. They have worked with Norman Foster among others. The trademark of the works of the firm, which was founded in 1968, is its ability to express ecological and social concerns in a strong aesthetic language. Process orientation and the revealing of chronological layers of a site are the focus of design. The firm’s current projects include the design of large-scale street and park environments on the Plateau de Kirchberg in the European City of Luxembourg, the Parco Dora in Turin, Italy, and the conversion of a disused waste disposal site in Ayalon Park near Tel Aviv, Israel. Peter Latz teaches at the Technical University) in Munich-Weihenstephan and has held guest professorships at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University. Udo Weilacher is dean of the Fakultät für Architektur und Landschaft (School of Architecture and Landscape) at Hanover University.

Summary:
The Scottish architect, designer and painter Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) was one of the early pioneers of modern architecture and design. His multifaceted œuvre is an important link between the movement towards artistic reform in Britain and continental Modernism. Mackintosh’s avant-garde designs for the Glasgow school of art, the legendary Willow tea rooms or the Hill house in Helensburgh are a blend of functional simplicity and poetic decorative details. The result is a cool elegance which combines "mysticism and aestheticism with a strong touch of lilac ... and a gentle sensuality". In addition to his architectural works, this book focuses on Mackintosh’s famous interiors and also on his often neglected textile designs and watercolours.

Summary:
As founder of the Bauhaus school, Walter Gropius (1883?1969) is one of the icons of 20th century architecture. While his early buildings in Pomerania were still strongly marked by his teacher Peter Behrens, after an expressionistic phase focused on handicraft, he ultimately arrived at geometric abstraction. During the entire period he collaborated with other architects, founding the collective known as "The Architects Collaborative" in the US. The comprehensive monograph documents all 74 of the known buildings by Gropius that were realized, including many early works which he never publicized; but it also critically examines his unbuilt projects. The book is illustrated with new photographs by the author, historical figures, and with as new plans drawn by the author.

Summary:
This publication documents and narrates the story of the eponymous experience of Radical Design and its multidisciplinary school program “without students or teachers.” The Global Tools journey began with its foundation in 1973 by groups and figures drawn from Italian Radical Architecture, Arte Povera, and Conceptual Art, and ended in 1975 after three years of intense experimentation. This book is both a commentary and an impressive visual archive that brings together essays by international authors and reproductions of many original documents—including the Global Tools bulletins, entirely republished here for the first time. This unique and definitive book marks a fundamental stage in the rediscovery of one of the most fascinating European cultural experiences of the late twentieth century.

Summary:
From 2008 to 2010, Madrid based architects Luis M. Mansilla and Emilio Tunon held the Jean Labatut Visiting Professorship at the Princeton School of Architecture. More than a collection of student work, From Rules to Constraints is a wide ranging reflection on teaching, design practice, history and the city. Focusing on three sites at three distinct scales, this book examines the constraints of the architectural project social, political, historical, and environmental in order to create new rules for working. Examining both their teaching methods and Mansilla + Tunon`s own design work, the book presents the design process as an ongoing conversation between the building and the environment, between freedom and limits, and between the decided and undecided.

Summary:
Cornelia Brierly was one of the first apprentices to attend Frank Lloyd Wright's school of architecture. Before long, she was a working colleague of the master architect; during the last thirty years of his career, she made important design contributions to many of his building projects. Brierly has spent most of her life at Wright's Taliesin (Wisconsin) and Taliesin West (Arizona). This illustrated memoir tells the story of nearly seventy years spent with the Taliesin Fellowship. It is an important work, not only because of the author's closeness to the twentieth century's foremost architect but because she has observed at first hand the unfolding of organic architecture -- Wright's design precepts made manifest. In an affectionate, honest, and preceptive book, she celebrates the fellowship as a way of life and brings to life a vibrant community that is still going strong, forty years after Wright's death.

Summary:
Cutural Cues is the sixth book featured the work of the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professorship, which brings young innovators in architectural design to the Yale School of Architecture. This book includes the studio research and projects of Joe Day of Deegan Day Design in “NOWplex” a cinema in L.A., Tom Wiscombe of Tom Wiscombe Architecture in “The Broad Redux,” for a new interpretation of the Broad Museum in L.A., and Adib Cure & Carie Penabad of Cure Penabade in the studio “Havana: Housing in the Historic Center.” The studios explore contemporary interpretations of the implications of cinema, the museum, and housing, taking cues from their complex cultural and urban contexts. Along with student work, interviews with the architects about the work of their professional offices and essays framing the themes of the work are combined with insight into the pedagogical approach of these practitioner-educators.
