''The Museum Is Not Enough'' (no. 10–14) gathers conversations among curators, artists, academics, and architects on how institutions engage multiple contexts, objects, and perspectives: reflecting on strategies to unlearn and decentre established ways of seeing and doing; looking closely at how to describe and document archival sources while interrogating the stakes, and often the harm, in separating cultural objects from their context; questioning the relationship between institutions and “the public”; and discussing curatorial tools—and particularly film—that collapse research and display, observation and action, here and there. Underlying these reflections is the realization that the museum’s activity can’t be constructed from a fixed position. Unless the questions it deals with are observed from another angle, it is hard not to perpetuate the thinking that created them. The Zanollis had immigrated from Italy in 1905. Their family business was run by Antonietta and her daughters Pia, Lea, and Zoe Zanolli. The cultural and stylistic influences manifested in the Zanollis’ visually appealing products range from the avant-garde to an aesthetic forged by a spirit of intellectual national defense against the increasing threat of the totalitarian regimes in Nazi Germany, fascist Italy, and the communist Soviet Union, that was prevalent in Switzerland in the 1930s. Driven by a striving for artistic self-realization, the atelier defied the many economic challenges of the period and carried out many commissions for Zurich’s leading textile businesses and department stores. This book traces the history of Atelier Zanolli, places its work in the context of the growth of Zurich and the Swiss textile industry in the first half of the twentieth century, and for the first time positions the “Zanolli style” internationally. More than six hundred images show the wealth of colors and shapes in a veritable cosmos of textiles and crafted objects, as well as templates, sketches, private photographs, business cards, and letters. The essays illuminate the techniques and work processes used, discuss entire motif families and unique designs, and grant rare comprehensive insight into the tastes of the time.

Shifting between the Pop-like and the Surreal, the Minimal and the metaphorical, the figurative and the abstract, the psychotic and the erotic, with references to "free love" and psychedelia, it seemed to embody all that the 1960s was about, while at the same time denying the prevailing aesthetics of its time. The installation itself was a room lined with mirrored panels and carpeted with several hundred brightly polka-dotted soft fabric protrusions into which the visitor was completely absorbed. Kusama simply called it "a sublime, miraculous field of phalluses." A precursor of performance-based feminist art practice, media pranksterism, and "Occupy" movements, Kusama (born in 1929) was once as well known as her admirers - Andy Warhol, Donald Judd, and Joseph Cornell. In this first monograph on an epoch-defining work, Jo Applin looks at the installation in detail and places it in the context of subsequent art practice and theory as well as Kusama's own (as she called it) "obsessional art." Applin also discusses Kusama's relationship to her contemporaries, particularly those working with environments, abstract-erotic sculpture, and mirrors, and those grappling with such issues as abstraction, eroticism, sexuality, and softness. The work of Lee Lozano, Claes Oldenburg, Louise Bourgeois, and Eva Hesse is seen anew when considered in relation to Yayoi Kusama's.

From a minimalist position Ninaber van Eyben searches for pragmatic solutions to make functional objects, always keeping in touch with the end product's poetic quality. Among other classics he gave the wristwatch (1973), the neck watch (1976) and the TL lamp (1977) to the world. His watches are still commercially successful. In 1980 Ninaber designed the Dutch coin series with the portrait of H.M. Queen Beatrix and eighteen years later his design won the competition for the Dutch side of the Euro coin. His products grace museum collections in the Netherlands and also abroad, notably at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Together with Wolfram Peters and Peter Krouwel he founded the industrial design studio n|p|k in 1985. He was its co-director for twelve years. In 1997 he started a new office, Bruno Ninaber van Eyben design & production. It develops high-quality and sometimes more personal products independently and for a limited number of customers, such as the Prime Minister's national gift, the chairperson's gavel for Parliament and the new chain of office for the mayor of Papendrecht, a small town near Rotterdam. "With compliments" is not a traditional monograph. It is mainly a story in images, showing Ninaber's products and sources of inspiration. Short, strong statements underline the images and provide them with a context.

Richard Misrach is among the most influential, prolific, and internationally recognized photographers working today. Best known for his epic ongoing project, Desert Cantos-an extensive and unique photographic exploration of place-Misrach consistently addresses political and social issues through the adaptation of different photographic strategies, even as he expands notions of traditional landscape practice, and builds a complex and poignant document of American culture. His subjects have included manmade floods and fires, military bombing ranges, mass graves of dead animals, sublime night skies, and details of paintings housed in the museums of the Southwest. Richard Misrach is among the most influential, prolific, and internationally recognized photographers working today. Best known for his epic ongoing project, Desert Cantos-an extensive and unique photographic exploration of place-Misrach consistently addresses political and social issues through the adaptation of different photographic strategies, even as he expands notions of traditional landscape practice, and builds a complex and poignant document of American culture. His subjects have included manmade floods and fires, military bombing ranges, mass graves of dead animals, sublime night skies, and details of paintings housed in the museums of the Southwest. In one recent series, "On the beach"-which was inspired by Nevil Shute’s postapocalyptic novel of the 1950s-Misrach’s color photographs deal with the human figure seen at a distance on an unspecified beach or in the water, observed from an unsettling and difficult-to-identify point of view located high above.
