Summary:
This volume presents essays, stories, research and photographs showing how African cities by waterfronts deal with two of the most significant trends of our time: urbanization and a changing climate. On the African continent, the impact of climate change is now an everyday reality. Coastal and waterfront cities in particular experience loss and damage due to significant increases in sea level rise, rainfall and flooding. At the same time, Africa is the second most rapidly urbanizing continent (after Asia). The intersections between water and cities are therefore critical for understanding the future of urban and rural developments in Africa. Through deeper understanding of the innovative and resourceful way of life of informal water communities such as Makoko and coastal cities such as Abidjan, "African water cities" reveals key factors, challenges and opportunities shaping human, physical and economic dynamics.

Summary:
"Room for thought" is an illuminating collection of twenty-one essays by Avi Friedman. The essays are about the points where design touches life and the big and small things that make us appreciate, or become disconnected from, our homes and neighborhoods. Drawing on his experiences as an architect, planner, world traveler, and educator, Friedman delves into issues such as the North American obsession with monster homes, the impact of scale on the feeling of comfort in our communities, environmental concerns such as deforestation, innovative recycling methods in building materials, the booming do-it-yourself industry, the decline of craftsmanship, and the role of good design in bringing families together. Written with Friedman's trademark flair, "Room for thought" offers a compelling vision of the influence of design on our everyday lives from one of the world's most innovative thinkers.

Summary:
Flour, water, and salt. These are the sole ingredients that make Hardtack: a Civil War-era food long-associated with survivalism, land migration, and its extremely long shelf life. Drawing from this history as a metaphor for the long-enduring nature of Black culture and traditions, Hardtack uncovers the roots that tie Fortune's native landscape to the conflicts and nuances associated with the post-emancipation Americas. In the follow-up to his breakout monograph I can't stand to see you cry, Fortune borrows from the language of vernacular and archival photography to interrogate the historical relationship of his community to photography; rooted in the landscape, Fortune often uses sites of historical and cultural interest as a guide but not a subject, implying the deep ties that bind modern Black communities resiliently to their regions, in the face of both adversity and joy.

Summary:
The career of avant-garde photographer and activist Germaine Krull (1897–1985) took her across the world over a turbulent century. After growing up around Europe, Krull studied photography in Munich during the First World War. There she acquired her nickname or alter-ego ‘Chien fou’ (Mad Dog), which provides the chronological and thematic starting point for this volume of writings drawn from the course of Krull’s extraordinary life, most published for the first time. The selected texts range from artistic manifestos to political essays to memoirs, written between the 1920s and ’80s in a wide variety of places and circumstances. They narrate Krull’s life among the creative communities of the Bavarian Soviet Republic and interwar Paris, her participation in the French Resistance in Brazil and Equatorial Africa, and her later decision to settle in Thailand, then India.

Summary:
A culmination of four years of photographing throughout Oregon, Washington and Northern California, Sawdust Mountain focuses on the tenuous relationship between industries reliant upon natural resources and the communities they support. Timber and salmon are the bedrock of a regional Northwest identity, but the environmental impact of these declining industries has been increasingly at odds with the contemporary ideal of sustainability. In this, his second book, Johnson reveals a landscape imbued with an uncertain future--no longer the region of boomtowns built upon the riches of massive old-growth forests. Johnson, a Seattle native, describes his photographs as, "a melancholy love letter of sorts, my own personal ramblings..." Through this poetic approach, Sawdust Mountain records a region affected by historic economic complexities and, by extension, one aspect of our fraught relationship with the environment in the twenty-first century.

Summary:
When we think of climate, the stories we tell about the future are often catastrophic: megastorms, crop failures, and heat waves loom over us, sending a signal that the problem is so vast, so complex, that it’s out of our control. That narrative is compelling for some, but leaves others feeling hopeless, helpless, and disillusioned. Even the most ardent champions of(...)

Even the most ardent champions of decarbonization sometimes focus more on sounding the alarm than on mapping out what success might look like. Without positive climate futures, visions of climate adaptation and resilience that we can work toward, it’s much harder to motivate broad-based efforts for change in the present. Through short speculative fiction, essays, and visual art, "Climate imagination" seeks to inspire a wave of narratives about what positive climate futures might look like for communities around the world.

Summary:
"Multi-National city" follows three architectural itineraries through three cities and their histories. Like so many, these cities are caught within the feedback loops of globalization : Silicon Valley in northern California; New York's internal suburbias; and Gurgaon, a burgeoning corporate city outside of New Delhi. Each exhibits a distinct character, while together, they also form important nodes in what the authors describe as a single Multi-National city (MNC) stretching across the globe. The itineraries traced through them take the reader on a tour of the architectural monuments of corporate globalization-corporate campuses, high-rise towers, "public" atriums, call centers, and gated communities-that tracks their shared logic, their internal discrepancies, and their undeniable strangeness. Each itinerary concludes with an unannounced stop at an architectural project that applies the lessons of the Multi-National city to itself.
