AP144.S2.D70
Description:
File documents the executed project for an office building to house the computer facilities of the British Transport Docks Board (BTDB) at Bulls Bridge and Hayes Road, in Southall, Ealing, England. The building has few doors and no corridors, rooms for computers, data control and preparation, and offices for engineers, programmers, and analysts. The client anticipated a 20% expansion of facilities during the life-cycle of the building and Cedric Price developed designs for "expanding" the building without interrupting computer services which were to run 24 hours a day. Design included interior walls that can be dismounted and reinstalled, a raised flexible floor system, and an exterior cladding system that allowed for an interchange between opaque and transparent panels. Existing conditions material includes an ordinance survey (1963) and floor plans for an unidentified building. Design development and working drawings include site plans, floor plans, sections, elevations, and construction details. The plans show: circulation patterns and relationships between areas; a series of alternate floor plans for computer room expansion; connections between original and expanded services; the computer room and equipment; furniture layout; framing and structure; and plans for acoustic and visual barriers. Also included are axonometric drawings of the phased development/expansion of the structure; design validation charts which measure projected "required" design elements against observation and investigation; environmental control charts exploring alternate proposals for illumination, ventilation, air, temperature, and acoustic control of certain areas, and diagrammatic sections showing environmental controls for air intake, returns and circulation; project requirements charts; project task sequencing diagrams; perspective drawings; elevations and sections for an illuminated sign; and details and wall sections for the exterior cladding. Twenty-nine individual and 60 sets of reprographic copies are stamped "issued contractor". Material for publication includes: details, site plans, floor plans and exterior elevations, b/w post-construction photographs, and a photo collage. Some material from this file was published in: Price, Cedric, "ECHOES: Environment Controlled Human Operational Enclosed Spaces", 'Architectural Design' (October 1969), 547-552; "Cedric Price Supplement No. 2", 'Architectural Design', vol. 41, (January 1971), 25; Price, Cedric, 'Cedric Price-Works II' (London: Architectural Press, 1984), 72, 82-83, 112, 113. Material in this file was produced between 1966 and 1984, but predominantly between 1968 and 1973. Sandy Brown appears as the acoustics consultant and Zisman, Bowyer & Partners appear as the services consultants in this file. File contains design development drawings, working drawings, reference drawings, photographic materials, and textual records.

Description:
The series documents the design of Beaver Lake Pavilion, built for the City of Montréal between 1955 and 1959 as part of the redevelopment of Mount Royal Park. Sise worked with architect Guy Desbarats (1925-2003) on the project. The pavilion was built as part of a larger public works project directed by the City during the 1950s and 1960s during which time many park facilities were built. Beaver Lake Pavilion is recognized to have encouraged a renewal in the architectural forms of public facilities (1). The file contains 43 working drawings which depict every aspect of construction of the pavilion (location plan, floor plans, elevations and sections, as well as numerous detail drawings). Included with the drawings is documentation collected by Sise to support his design, including a topographical map of the park (Mount-Royal - Design Map - 1877), as well as a 1955 book published by the City Planning Department of the City of Montreal (Montreal Master Plan - Open Spaces). Description:
This project series documents a study to determine the location of the RCMP building at the Lester B. Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ontario in 1984. The office identified the project number as 8406. Since the early 1960s, John B. Parkin Associates, and later John C. Parkin's new firm Parkin Architects Planners, had been commissioned by the government Department of Transport Air Services (now Transport Canada) to complete more than a dozen projects at the Toronto International Airport, including terminals one and two. This project consisted of a study to determine the best location for the RCMP at the airport. At the time of the study, the RCMP were located in terminal one, but the growing needs of other airport departments had pushed them into a temporary location. This study investigated two possible options, the construction of a new police building or the renovation of the central workshop facility. The report suggested the latter option, which could house the RCMP offices, technical and exhibit spaces, holding cells, storage and support facilities. The project is recorded through textual records dating from 1984, which consist of the project proposal and risk and cost analysis sheets.

Description:
This project series documents a competition entry for the Tip Top Tailors building on Lake Shore Boulevard in Toronto in 1994. The office identified the project number as 9402. This project, headed by Bruce Kuwabara, consisted of a proposal for a new, mixed-use development on the site behind the iconic Tip Top Tailors building, originally built in the 1920s. Situated on the shoreline of Lake Ontario, the main tower of the development would have a boat shaped silhouette to reflect its nautical surroundings. The base would consist of office, retail and communal spaces, while the tower would hold residential apartments, a restaurant and health club. The project also proposed renovations to the existing building, including the addition of three penthouse floors clad in metal and glass and back from the other levels to respect the character of the existing concrete building. In total, 382,390 square feet of new construction was proposed along with 258,170 square feet of renovations and additions. This competition entry was never realized. The project is recorded through drawings and presentation paintings dating from on or around 1994. The drawings are mostly originals and include sketches, presentation drawings, plans, elevations and perspectives.

Description:
The project series documents the commission, design, and construction of the Gordillo studio, neighbouring the client’s house (AP164.S1.1993.D2) on Castilla de Ponferrada Street, in Villanueva de la Cañada, Community of Madrid, Spain. The firm identified this project as number 119. “The Gordillo Studio is a prismatic, serrated volume that occupies the plot’s only available strip of land and minimizes its presence through the use of two materials, translucent polycarbonate and xerophilous plantings, which seek the best adaptation to the site, the program and the client. Using this system, a semi-buried interior is constructed in which the light has been modeled as a solid, expansive material, the aim being to satisfy not only the specific demands of the work space but also the creation of an agreeable atmosphere, as austere as it is sensual.” (ARCH270975) Abalos & Herreros worked with Ángel Jaramillo Sanchez, María Auxiliadora Gálvez, Renata Sentkiewicz, Juan Gómez, Fernando Valero and José Torras. In 2002, the project won the COAM 2000 prize. Documenting this project are conceptual, design development and working drawings, photographic and reference materials, correspondence, notes, budgets, reports, studies, forms, project descriptions, invoices, certifications and trade catalogues.

Description:
This project series documents Cornelie Hahn Oberlander's landscape project for the University of British Columbia's Faculty Club, a social club providing accomodation and recreation for members of the Society, in Vancouver. The Faculty Club is located on the northern edge of the University of British Columbia's campus and overlook the Burrard Inlet and the North Shore Mountains. Oberlander worked on this project from 1956-1959 with architect Fred Lasserre and later architect Arthur Erickson in 1963. During the first phase of the construction in 1956, Oberlander designed the parking area, the upper terrace, and garden with a water feature of water cascading into a series of square basins. For the second phase of the design, Oberlander worked with architect Arthur Erickson, who connected the water feature to a larger pool situated next to a new pavilion. In 2008, the Faculty Club was converted into classrooms and Oberlander was hired to revitalise the planting areas around the club. The project series contains sketches for the upper terrace, design development drawings, including landscape plans, grading plans and planting plans, presentation drawings and working drawings, including building plans used for reference. The project series also includes photographs.

Description:
This project series documents the Parque de Santo Domingo de Bonaval in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 3/90. The office assigned the date 1990 to this project. The project was for the Santo Domingo de Bonaval Park, located in the gardens of the Convent of Santo Domingo de Bonaval and an abandoned cementery. The park was part of the construction of the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporânea and was understood as an extension of it. The design was a collaboration between landscape architect Isabel Aguirre and Álvaro Siza. There was also a restoration component to the project which included restoring the pavement, paths, fountains and walls. The park, measuring 37 047 square metres, included an Eduardo Chillida sculpture. Siza and Aguirre decided not to include trash bins in the park and designed fifty-six benches. The project received the Premio Nacional de Arquitectura Manuel de la Dehesa award in 1997. Documenting this project are studies, preliminary drawings, plans and working drawings. Textual materials include project documentation, notes and correspondence. Photographic materials document the models, project site and built project.
