In this publication, Pamela Lee traces the complex encounters between Cold War think tanks and the art of that era. Lee shows how the approaches and methods of think tanks—including systems theory, operations research, and cybernetics—paved the way for a peculiar genre of midcentury modernism and set the terms for contemporary neoliberalism. Summary:
In this publication, Pamela Lee traces the complex encounters between Cold War think tanks and the art of that era. Lee shows how the approaches and methods of think tanks—including systems theory, operations research, and cybernetics—paved the way for a peculiar genre of midcentury modernism and set the terms for contemporary neoliberalism. Lee casts these shadowy institutions as sites of radical creativity and interdisciplinary practice in the service of defense strategy. Describing the distinctive aesthetics that emerged from such institutions as the RAND Corporation, she maps the multiple and overlapping networks that connected nuclear strategists, mathematicians, economists, anthropologists, artists, designers, and art historians.

Summary:
Once only a vague metaphor to describe the relationship between different social groups, the term “social distance” has acquired a precise meaning during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is the mandatory minimum distance for face-to-face contact between persons, and can vary slightly depending on the jurisdiction. Rather than asserting a diagnosis of our contemporary global emergency, this issue offers perspectives from architectural history and theory. From the great plague of Venice to cholera in the industrialising city, and from the human placenta to the 1960s bubble or the office of today, here a broad range of reflections on contagion, disease, and health can be found.

Summary:
''De architectura'', written by Vitruvius in the first century BCE, is revered as the first treatise on architectural theory. Since its Renaissance resurrection, the enigmatic text has been adapted, refined, and redefined in subsequent iterations. ''Vitruvius without text'' bypasses critical interpretations to focus on the material history of the printed editions that appeared throughout Europe. It surveys over 100 editions from 1486 to the present, tracing the power of the printed page in establishing the Roman author as an authority. By focusing on the impact of the physical objects of the Vitruvian canon, it highlights how the history of printing and architecture intersect to form a symbiotic relationship.

Summary:
What objects exist in the social world and how should we understand them? Is a specific Pizza Hut restaurant as real as the employees, tables, napkins and pizzas of which it is composed, and as real as the Pizza Hut corporation with its headquarters in Wichita, the United States, the planet Earth and the social and economic impact of the restaurant on the lives of its employees and customers? In this book the founder of object-oriented philosophy develops his approach in order to shed light on the nature and status of objects in social life. While it is often assumed that an interest in objects amounts to a form of materialism, Harman rejects this view and develops instead an "immaterialist" method. By examining the work of leading contemporary thinkers such as Bruno Latour and Levi Bryant, he develops a forceful critique of "actor-network theory." In an extended discussion of Leibniz’s famous example of the Dutch East India Company, Harman argues that this company qualifies for objecthood neither through "what it is" or "what it does," but through its irreducibility to either of these forms. The phases of its life, argues Harman, are not demarcated primarily by dramatic incidents but by moments of symbiosis, a term he draws from the biologist Lynn Margulis. This book provides a key counterpoint to the now ubiquitous social theories of constant change, holistic networks, performative identities, and the construction of things by human practice. It will appeal to anyone interested in cutting-edge debates in philosophy and social and cultural theory.

Summary:
"Spaces of Uncertainty" is a publication on issues of contemporary urban space, from the particular view of two young architects, Kenny Cupers and Markus Miessen. Their photographic and theoretic research constitutes a double movement, which opens up the traditional architectural gaze towards the social spectrum of urban spaces, while simultaneously offering an original theory of contemporary cultural practice. The issue of public space is one that crosses interdisciplinary boundaries and attracts high interest in the fields of architecture, urbanism, sociology and cultural studies. With Berlin as a case study for a globalised urban condition, the publication aims at a wide international public by providing a broadly conceived theory that approaches the city at the same time as a material phenomenon and as a social and philosophical idea. Public space in its traditional interpretations is unable to follow the heartbeat of today's rapidly changing city. Instead of adding force to an ongoing rhetorical discourse of loss, this publication acknowledges the existence of places beyond traditional definition. With a photographic essay on Berlin, it opens an unexpectedly contemporary view upon this agitated debate. Left with enormous amounts of infill and fallow land, Berlin is a city in which residual space and public space lose their definitions. As playgrounds for micro-political activities, permanent hiding-places or areas for temporary occupation, its residual spaces prove their necessity. Shy and unassuming, these very spaces of uncertainty show their value for public life in the contemporary city. With contributions by Margaret Crawford, Hilde Heynen, Paul Davies, Paul Halliday and Jürgen Mayer H.

This book is key reading for all students of architecture and architectural theory. It addresses the vital role of the imagination in the critical interpretation of architectural representations. By challenging the contemporary tendency for computer-aided drawings to become mere models for imitation in the construction of buildings, the articles explore the broader range of methods and meanings at stake in the creation and interpretation of architectural drawings, models, images and artefacts.
