'Documents on Raphael' is not only a rediscovery project carried out on the five hundredth anniversary of Raphael's death, but above all an operation of re-visioning. Stefano Graziani's photographs explore the works of the artist from Urbino—with particular reference to his output as an architect—their transformation over time, and his own process that translated them into images. Graziani puts variation before permanence and reflects on the very concept of the restoration, the archive, conservation, display, and of course the original, that last so dear to the photographic debate, especially considering that Raphael never saw any of his works as we see them today. Graziani's images, combined with reliable evidence regarding Raphael's production, refer back to the most iconic classical genres of representation: landscape and still life.

The latest project from New York–based photographer Renate Aller includes mountain peaks from six continents. These photographs were taken from locations as high as 22,500 feet (adjacent to Mount Everest) to the European glaciers and mountain peaks of her childhood vacations. The subject matter is monumental, yet the images connect the viewer in a way that is not overpowering. Similar to the sand dune images from "Ocean | Desert", the artist engages us with these giants in all their detail, the veins and textures of the rocks in their constantly transient state. Aller isolates the mountain from its expected surroundings, using and presenting the familiar and the known in an intimate way, relating to parallel realities from different locations, opening up conversations between the different (political) landscapes in which we live.

Photographer Mariana Cook (born 1955) is best known for her intimate character studies of persons both in and out of the public eye, as published in her much-acclaimed collections "Fathers and Daughters, Mothers and Sons, Generations of Women, Couples, Faces of Science and Mathematicians." Cook departs from her portrait work with "Stone Walls: Personal Boundaries", a project that was conceived one day at her home on Martha's Vineyard, when 56 cows strayed through a crumbling section of the stone wall she shares with her neighbor. From this moment, Cook embarked on an eight-year journey, travelling from New England to the American South, Britain, Ireland, the Mediterranean and Peru in pursuit of dry stone walls. Far from being a conventional travelogue, these black-and-white photographs portray the wall in landscape, the wall as abstract form, and the return of rocks to nature. Cook is fascinated with the juxtaposition of stones as an instance of geometric composition, as well as with the resonance between walls of different cultures. With a tribute from Wendell Berry and essays providing a context for the walls of each region, the resulting collection captures a fundamental aspect of the relationship human beings forge with the land they inhabit.

Abbott and Atget met in Man Ray's Paris studio in the early 1920s. Atget, then in his sixties, was obsessively recording the streets, gardens, and courtyards of the 19th-century city- old Paris- as modernization transformed it. Abbott acquired much of Atget's work after his death and was a tireless advocate for its value. Distortion, experimentation and illusion inform Guidi’s earlier work of the late 1960s and early 1970s, further developed by the introduction of a fish-eye lens. The moon’s physical form echoes throughout the works: in a woman’s face, or a child’s playing ball caught between light and shadow. Guidi’s barren, lunar landscapes give way in the 1980s to colour photographs, all of which culminate in the dramatic partial solar-eclipse of August 11, 1999. How exactly has San Francisco's urban landscape changed in the hundred years since the earthquake and cataclysmic firestorms that destroyed three-quarters of the city in 1906? For this rephotography project, bringing past and present into dynamic juxtaposition, photographer Mark Klett has gone to the same locations pictured in forty-five historic photographs taken in the days following the 1906 earthquake and fires and precisely duplicated each photograph's vantage point. The result is a comparison that challenges our preconceptions about time, history, and culture. This publication accompanies an exhibition at The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. After the Ruins, 1906 and 2006 features a vivid essay by noted environmental historian Philip Fradkin on the events surrounding and following the 1906 earthquake, which he describes as "the equivalent of an intensive, three-day bombing raid, complete with many tons of dynamite that acted as incendiary devices." Since 2008, German photographer Winfried Bullinger (born 1965) has traveled around Eastern and Central Africa, capturing the vernacular architecture of these regions. In this physical archive of his long-term project, Bullinger portrays a diverse array of African pastoralists’ homes, including tents, open dwellings and huts. Despite their variety, the structures are all made from materials available directly on site; they are radically efficient and sustainable. Implementing a silver-gelatin technique, Bullinger shoots with a large-format camera and honors the capricious natural light of day. Although he captures few inhabitants in his images, Bullinger records their many traces. Indeed, his photographs are born from a dialogue with the inhabitants and reveal architecture as a direct response, refined over centuries, to a people’s specific environment and culture. Bullinger’s conscientious formal and interpersonal decisions culminate in this valuable record of rapidly disappearing African architectural heritage.
