Summary:
When Minnette De Silva founded the Studio of Modern Architecture in Kandy, Sri Lanka (then Ceylon), in 1947, she was one of the first women in the world to establish a professional architectural practice as sole principal. Today, she is known for her designs and constructions of private residences and public institutions, settlement planning, experiments in building and handicraft, research, curation, and writing. Her practice treated architecture as a lived experience and a contemporary expression of heterogeneous pasts. ''Minnette De Silva: Intersections'' offers a richly illustrated critical introduction to De Silva’s practice, exploring a range of projects through the intersecting intellectual concerns that shaped her work. Archival materials, drawings, photographs, and extracts from De Silva’s memoir, ''The Life and Work of an Asian Woman Architect'', describe her diverse work in a career situated in Sri Lanka and informed by substantial engagements with India, England, Greece, Hong Kong, and elsewhere. Drawing on modernist architectural techniques and material heritage practices, De Silva forged a distinctive, critically engaged aesthetic program and set of values. This book by architectural historian Anooradha Iyer Siddiqi, researched with Methmini Kariyakarawana and others, offers a primer to the thought and production of one of the twentieth century’s most significant architects and cultural figures.

Summary:
[SANAA Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa / works and projects] SANAA has distinguished itself by its original approach to projects. Every building is designed as a kind of equivalent of the abstract spatial diagram of the daily activity it is destined to house. The use of elementary volumes, simple geometry, translucent materials and polycarbonate casing produces a rarefied architecture that is strikingly contemporary. Its buildings include the Saishunkan Seiyaku Women's Dormitory (Kumamoto, 1991), the Multimedia Workshop (Kitakata, 1996), the S-House (Okayama, 1996), the K-Building (Ibaraki, 1997), the Gifu Kitagata Apartment (Gifu, 1998), the O-Museum (Nagano, 1999), and the Small House (Tokyo, 2000). In recent years the group has designed buildings for Prada, Issey Miyake and Christian Dior. This book has been published to accompany the monographic exhibition which after being mounted at the Kanazawa Museum will be held at the Basilica Palladiana in Vicenza from October onwards.

Summary:
"Out of the ordinary" is a detailed account of current work by Pollard Thomas Edwards architects (PTEa), accompanied by an overview of the career of this prominent practice. Innovators in both design and business strategies, PTEa have been pioneers of urban property development since they were established in the 1970s, and their radical methodologies continue to influence contemporary architecture, even as they continue to evolve. PTEa's innovations have now become absorbed into standard urban design practice; this book shows how they continue to build upon their own radical approach in their most recent projects, including the development at City Road Basin, which houses their own offices among new mixed-use buildings and public gardens. PTEa's work, in its emphasis upon context and the accommodation of the new within the old, is doubly 'out of the ordinary'; by emerging from and working within 'ordinary', existing structures, they are a truly extraordinary practice.

Summary:
This book presents 27 of the more than 600 projects and creations completed by one of the leading French contemporary architects. Some of these creations are very well known, not merely among design and interior architecture specialists but by the public at large. From inflatable structures (Kléber Colombes in the 1970s) to the headquarters of major firms (Ford, Renault, L’Oréal, BMCE Bank, among others), Ronald Cecil Sportes has created original works representing an engagement with a sleek and strikingly modern aesthetic. Sportes has designed many furniture items (chairs, lamps, etc.), designs honored by many museums, including Cooper-Hewitt in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris, and Victoria and Albert Museum in London, who have devoted major retrospectives to the architect (beginning in 1985). Classic Not Plastic includes a documented index that enables the reader to discover the author's profound intentions as well as investigate further into Sportes' work.

Summary:
Life in Japan – and therefore also the culture of living – oscillates between two very contrasting poles: on the one hand, the tranquility of country life, surrounded by the sounds of nature, with tatami floors, flexible sliding walls, and wraparound engawa wooden verandas, and on the other, the frenetic dynamism of the metropolises and large cities with minimalist townhouses on narrow plots and sophisticated micro-apartments. It becomes exciting when these worlds of tradition and modernity meet and interact with each other in terms of design. This volume offers a multifaceted overview of contemporary Japanese residential architecture and introduces the art of creating spaces that combine functionality and spirituality. It offers unique insights into the principles that make them so special and shows how living spaces are not only designed but also experienced. The selected projects invite you to understand and reinterpret the essence of Japanese living cultures.

Summary:
With more than 150 illustrations, this monograph offers the first in-depth look at the genesis of the Steiger House, a masterpiece of modern Swiss architecture, situated in the Doldertal in Zurich near other modernist houses, such as the Doldertal Houses by Roth and Breuer (1936) and the Fellowship Home (1960). Its central hall relates to Villa la Rotonda by Andrea Palladio. Detailed analyses illustrate the central layout and outline the chronology, typology and construction of the building. Further contributions illuminate its relation to local topography, the cultural context of the building, and important historical and contemporary architectural references, including the Steiger House's famous neighbors, the Doldertal Houses. The Swiss architect couple Flora Steiger-Crawford (1899–1991, also a sculptor) and Rudolf Steiger (1900–82) are important representatives of the Swiss avant-garde, and Flora Crawford was the first female architect to graduate from ETH Zurich.

Summary:
Already known as one of Mexico’s greatest architects, Tatiana Bilbao (born 1972) has created some of the country’s most striking buildings. Her first project was a collaboration with artist Gabriel Orozco on his beach house near Puerto Escondido, and she quickly developed a collaborative approach, working with artists such as Ai Weiwei on projects in China and Spain, or with the Culiacán Botanical Garden (designed by engineer and gardener Carlos Murillo) to install art works and service buildings. Bilbao’s buildings always take social conditions into account, as demonstrated in projects such as her design for a pilgrimage route. Featuring these projects and more, this overview provides insights into the Mexican cultural, artistic and building traditions that Bilbao incorporates into her projects. The volume addresses the question of the use of collage in architecture and embeds Bilbao’s work in a contemporary as well as a historical context.
