Summary:
Joseph Beuys (1921–1986) was one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century—and one of the most controversial. Working in Germany in the aftermath of World War II, he explored a radically expanded concept of art through a practice that ranged from performative actions to large-scale sculptural ensembles. While some contemporaries found his claim that “everyone is an artist” liberating, even revolutionary, others accused him of fostering a dangerous cult of personality. In "Joseph Beuys and History", the first rigorous art historical study of the artist in English, Daniel Spaulding presents a striking new interpretation of Beuys’s work and career. By putting Beuys in the context of Germany’s postwar recovery, Spaulding shows that the artist’s superimposed biological, political, and economic metaphors offered a powerful way to think about the trajectory of human freedom, the place of art in capitalist modernity, and the possibility of an ecological aesthetics. At the same time, his oeuvre’s disquieting echoes of the Nazi past suggest that not everything could be reconciled in what Beuys called “social sculpture.”

Summary:
This book examines the public architecture of Ireland from 1680 to 1760, a crucial period during which the country undertook the combined tasks of recovering from war and constructing a new and stable society. New buildings, and new types of buildings, were needed to express and sustain this society. Architectural historian Edward McParland explores the role of public architecture in this enterprise, focusing on public buildings as works of architecture and art, while also discussing the political, social, and economic contexts in which they were built. The book opens with a discussion of the people who were involved in the creation of public architecture and a description of the physical appearance of Ireland at the time, including its roads and harbors, its market houses and churches. The author then presents detailed portraits of key public buildings, among them The Royal Hospital Kilmainham, The Royal Barracks, Dublin Castle, Trinity College Dublin, and Edward Lovett Pearce’s Parliament House. Drawing on extensive research in archives throughout Britain and Ireland, McParland documents the architectural and social importance of these remarkable public buildings.

Summary:
This incisive look at the historical, social, and economic forces that have shaped China's modern architecture analyzes the country's struggle to define its own architectural aesthetics. Since the early 1980s, when China opened its doors to international trade and tourism, the country's economy has expanded at an incredible rate. Today, China is poised to be a testing ground for the world's most innovative designers and engineers. Layla Dawson's groundbreaking survey of architectural currents in China lays out not only the historical events that have brought the country to this unique position, but explores the challenges inherent in opening up the country to outside forces and ideas. She examines projects by Chinese and non-Chinese architects, including Zaha Hadid's Soho City masterplan, Rem Koolhaas's CCTV Headquarters, Norman Foster's Shanghai Tower and plans for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. As Dawson demonstrates how conflicting architectural philosophies are visible in China's newly rising skyline, she takes an unblinking look at the liabilities China faces by opening itself up to foreign influence.

Summary:
What makes a good city? This question has long preoccupied groups interested and involved in the making and remaking of city spaces. In "The moral economy of cities", Evelyn S. Ruppert contends that the vision of the ‘good city’ embraced by professionals in the business of city making recognizes the interests of a dominant public, namely middle class consumers, office workers, tourists, and families. This vision stigmatizes certain members of the public like street youth, panhandlers, discount-and low-income shoppers, and the language used to extol the virtues of the good city inherently moralizes social conduct in the city. Using the redevelopment of the Yonge-Dundas intersection in downtown Toronto in the mid-1990s as a case study, Ruppert examines the language of planners, urban designers, architects, and marketing analysts to reveal the extent to which moralization legitimizes these professions in the public eye and buttresses the very projects they produce. Ruppert’s conclusion that economic practices are not free from moral investment encourages the considerable task of re-examining the implications of city planning and development worldwide.

Summary:
The story behind Vancouver’s emerging urban form: the buildings, public spaces, extraordinary landscapes and cultural values that have turned the city into the poster-child of North American urbanism. Located at the edge of a continent and at the corresponding edge of national public consciousness, Vancouver has developed in unique and unanticipated ways. It is now emerging as an experiment in contemporary city-making, with international interest in Vancouver as a model of post-industrial urbanism increasing exponentially. Lance Berelowitz explores the links between the city’s seductive natural setting, its turbulent political history and changing civic values, and its planning and design culture. He also makes the startling case that Vancouver is to Canada’s imagination what Los Angeles is to the American — a mythologized place of endless possibilities, while being grounded in an altogether more limited set of socio-economic and environmental limitations. Dream City is richly illustrated with both historical and contemporary photographs of many significant buildings and public spaces, as well as specially commissioned maps that reveal the underlying patterns of growth and change of Canada’s youngest metropolis.

Summary:
The intersection of architecture and the machine has a history that stretches back to the Industrial Revolution, however the machine has recently begun to appear in new ways in speculative architectural drawing and modelling. This issue of AD considers the influence of the machine as an allegorical device for exploring alternative architectural practices, and includes a cross-section of viewpoints from emerging and established international practitioners and academics. Allegory, a technique native to literature, provides a critical method through which machine typologies can contribute to deeper architectural narratives, offering new lenses for challenging or reassembling conventional modes of thought. An allegorical architectural project can unveil a story that enhances our awareness of something important. This AD reveals how engagement with the machine as an allegorical device in architectural discourse provides an avenue for architecture to provoke new ideas in response to current environmental, political, economic, cultural and social issues. At the forefront of this discussion, it extends the criticality of the topic within the broader spectrum of history, theory, philosophy, allegory and new technologies.

Summary:
Prefabrication cannot be ignored, for it challenges the most traditional values of architecture. Architects may have neglected this area of practical construction, but they have much to learn from pattern-book houses, modular structures, Portakabins and mobile homes. The Prefabricated Home examines how the relationship between architecture and industrialized building has now become an urgent issue for architects.Colin Davies traces the history of prefabricated buildings from small-scale ‘prefabs’ to the precast concrete mass housing of the 1960s to the present-day revival of interest in ‘volumetric’ modular buildings, and assesses their architectural implications. He looks at what is happening today in factories and on building sites worldwide, and contrasts the aesthetic concerns of architects with the economic ones of industrialized building manufacturers. He argues that the involvement of architects in industrialized building can produce an exciting new type of architecture that is humane, liberating and environmentally friendly. The Prefabricated Home is a revealing and instructive book that will appeal to anyone interested in architecture and concerned with the future of housing.

Summary:
Building structures to house the logistical and manufacturing processes of industry is one of the largest and most widespread architectural assignments. The specific functional and economic requirements make precise demands on the designs and planning. The functions of the buildings are often of varying complexity and usually consist of solutions allowing the companies to create an individual appearance. The organization of industrial processes together with the wide range of designs and building methods are clearly and practically treated in this design atlas. A systematic section presents the typology, the technical and logistical elements of industrial building in context. In the subsequent section, some 70 designs are described and analysed. Special emphasis is placed on those functions and procedures that inform the design such as production, montage, storage and distribution. JŸrgen Adam is Director of the Institute for Design and Construction at the University of Stuttgart. As an architect and teacher he has followed closely developments in international industrial building, as have the contributing authors, among others Gunther Henn, Klaus Daniels and Fritz Haller.

Summary:
Nanotechnology is widely regarded as one of the twenty-first century's key technologies, and its economic importance is sharply on the rise. In architecture and the construction industry it has potentials that are already usable today, especially the coating of surfaces to lend them functional characteristics such as increased tensile strength, self-cleaning capacity, fire resistance, and others. Additives based on nanomaterials make common materials lighter, more permeable, and more resistant to wear. Nanomaterials are not only extremely useful for roofs and facades; they also expand design possibilities for interior and exterior rooms and spaces. Nano insulating materials open up new possibilities for ecologically oriented architects. In this book, with a foreword by nobel prize winner Harold Kroto, architects, interior designers and designers will find an introduction to the scientific background specifically tailored to their needs, a critical discussion of the advantages and limits of the technology, and above all a comprehensive presentation of sixteen characteristics and functions of nanomaterials that are specially relevant for building and design, illustrated by numerous international project examples.
