This project series contains reproductions of photographs, drawings and panels displayed in the exhibit to document the São Victor neighbourhood, in Porto, Portugal. The exhibit text explained that: ... the group of 12 houses built for the São Victor neighbourhood was one of SAAL's most important operations, despite the fact that only a small part of the project was carried out. Maintaining the urban fabric of the 'ilhas' (islands) and their internal community ties, the São Victor design combined the responsiveness inherent in the participatory nature of the project with architectural and technical precision. An important case study, it led Álvaro Siza Vieira, the project architect, being invited to design projects in Berlin and The Hague in the following decade. In many aspects, São Victor represents an ethically and politically-minded architectural practice, with a stress on understanding the link between being responsive to the voice of the people and the permanence of architectural design. Oberlander worked on this project in 1998-2001 with architect Arthur Erickson and architectural firm Nick Milkovich Architects, who designed the building. The building consists in five separated structures to accomodate studios spaces as well as split-level residences. It also included a courtyard and roof gardens on all five building structures for which Oberlander was responsible of the design. The courtyard, formed by in the roof of the underground parking space, consists "a simple tapestry of pavers, ground cover, trees and a small reflecting basin [...]." [1] The roofs garden included planting of white roses at the edge of the building and ornemental grass. The rooftops serve as communal patio for the residents and was accesible to the public. The project was completed in 2001. The Waterfall Building was the last project Oberlander realized in collaboration with Arthur Erickson. Hubert and Charles Rohault de Fleury received domestic commissions for both urban housing -hôtel particuliers and apartment houses- and rural dwellings -châteaux, country houses and estates. Hubert also executed designs for furniture and garden pavilions. Hubert' work is characterized by restrained classical exteriors and luxurious Empire style interiors; both Charles' exteriors and interiors, especially those for Hôtels Sauvage and Soltykoff, reflect the exuberance of the Second Empire. The CCA albums include drawings from all stages of the design process but with an emphasis on design development drawings. Hubert's albums contain cost calculations and estimates, notes and letters. In general, the drawings by Charles are from a more developed phase of design than Hubert's; Hubert's commissions are more varied than Charles'. The austere classicism of Hubert's domestic work reflects the prevailing taste of the day and reveals the strong influence of his teacher, Jean Nicholas Louis Durand. The compostional effect of the houses' façades relies on the shape and rhythm of the fenestration and the geometric division by string courses and occasionally, pilasters. Columns are used infrequently as is decorative stonework. The plans are symmetrical and modular. This approach to design is especially evident in the series of proposals for a country house for comte Treilhard (DR1974:0002:034:001-082) and in a group of unidentified designs for houses (DR1974:0002:035:001-034), all of which illustrate an emphasis on plan in the design process and a distinct approach to the composition of the elevations, both derived from Durand. Hubert's domestic work was also influenced by Palladio (see especially DR1974:0002:038:001-029). The interiors and furniture designed by Hubert are typical of the Empire style (1). The drawings in the CCA collection illustrate the materials, palette and ornamental motifs of the period. The garden structures in Hubert's albums are more fanciful than his houses and are either Rustic, Chinoiserie or classical in style (2). His garden designs follow the contemporary French trend for "jardins anglais" with winding paths and naturalistic placement of the vegetation, sometimes in combination with more formal French gardens (3). One of the most comprehensively documented domestic project by Hubert is the Rohault de Fleury House (12-14 rue d'Aguesseau; 1824). The CCA collection contains an interesting series of preliminary drawings for alternate proposals for this house, a number of highly finished wash drawings (including the interior decorative scheme) for the final scheme (DR1974:0002:011:001-08) and several earlier (ca. 1806) proposals (DR1974:0002:035:001-034). The Domaine de la Vallée album (DR1974:0002:025:001-059) is notable for the range of subject matter included as well as for the insights into the character of a working country estate in the nineteenth century. The proposed modifications encompassed both functional (a bridge, a levee, granaries and stables) and aesthetic improvements, such as ornamental garden temples. The renovation of the house also exhibits both functional and aesthetic improvements. File documents a competition entry for a new pier on the Thames in the City of Westminster, London, England. The Westminster pier project consisted of a restaurant with deck and observation tower, a fixed pier or public walkway, a catwalk, various ramps, and a pontoon. Existing conditions drawings and photographs include: a hydrographic plan, site plan, and section of the pier and pier edge; an enlarged contact sheet of photographs of the site and surrounding area; and a photocopy of a photograph of a typical pier boat, possibly used for reference purposes. Conceptual sketches include numerous thumbnail and annotated diagrammatic sketches which explore the functional relationships of the areas encompassed by the project. Design development drawings show sections through river embankments, restaurant and tower structures, walkways, ramps, and catwalks, at high and low tide and at night and during the day. Axonometric drawings show the principal structures, circulation paths, and access and control points. A group of drawings are probably a competition entry set marked by a hole punched in the upper right hand corner. Presentation panels are composed of reproductions of photographs of the existing site with overdrawing and montage which shows Price's project in relationship to the river. Two presentation panels which show the walkway/ramp, pontoon, and restaurant in partial elevation have been coloured with airbrush. Duplicate reprographic copies were made from the original design development drawings, and some are annotated with notes. File also contains clippings about "sub-marine engineering" which are possibly related to this project. Material in this file was produced in 1979. Cedric Price's design includes the layout and detailing for display and holding cases, and possibly renovations for the kitchen, basement storage and bathroom facilities. Price also proposed an unusual front entrance which is flanked on either side by sculptural "tuning forks". There is an existing conditions reference plan of no. 26 and no. 29 South Audley Street. A panel with a reprographic copy of a schematic diagram outlines possible routes to the workplace for the staff. Conceptual and design development drawings include schematic sketches; numerous alternate floor plans; triangular, bulk barrel and zig-zag configurations for display and holding cases; and thumbnail sketches for the "tuning forks" for the entrance. Design development drawings also include: plans for proposals 1 and 2 for the renovations; an enlarged plan for the forecourt and display window showing the entrance, and including a key to storage areas; an axonometric for the entrance interior and an elevation for the principal façade showing the "tuning forks"; and plans, sections, and details for shelves, display counters, and holding cases.
