Summary:
From the outset, American artist Betty Woodman (born 1930) has used ceramics as her medium of expression and artistic research, and it has made her one of the most influential and original voices on the international art scene. Bridging the gap between art and craft, Woodman moves nimbly between the traditions of an age-old medium, taking inspiration from Minoan and Egyptian art, Greek and Etruscan sculpture, Tang Dynasty works, majolica and Sèvres porcelain, Italian Baroque architecture and the paintings of Bonnard, Picasso and Matisse, while also introducing innovations in both style and technique. This publication focuses on work made over the past ten years, while taking stock of Woodman's continued relevance to contemporary art and her importance among postwar artists.

Summary:
In the academic year 2000-2001, Yale professor and New York City based architect Peggy Deamer led two innovative courses: first, a focused seminar on the state of contemporary residential design; second, a creative studio offering house designs that drew on the discoveries of the seminar. This book, the second in a series documenting work at the Yale School of Architecture, combines work from both courses in a thoughtful and provocative study of the state of the house at the turn of the millennium. Deamer introduces the volume with an essay on three issues vital to a discussion of millennial design: newness, uniqueness, and design innovation. Designs of visiting seminar critics -- Steven Holl, Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, William McDonough, LOT/EK, Winy Maas, and Jacques Herzog -- are showcased along with descriptive and analytical texts. Work from the studio course is divided into various themes explored by the students: image, standardization and modularity, networks and diagrams. The hybrid quality of this volume -- designs by practicing architects and students; observation and interpretation -- reflects debates and issues at the heart of early-twenty-first-century architecture.

Summary:
Adolf Loos (1870-1933) was a Viennese architect known for his radical building facades. Author Ralf Bock reveals the sensuality of Loos's interior designs, demonstrating that Loos was not an architect of the "white modern movement," but rather, he fought against it. A careful analysis of Loos's ideology and oeuvre, this book features 30 existing projects in 160 extraordinary full-color images by the celebrated French photographer Philippe Ruault, who has completely rephotographed Loos's works. These new images offer different interpretations of Loos' interiors and bring him back to the center of contemporary architectural debate. The color photographs are supplemented by archival photos from the Loos Archive of the Albertina, Vienna, and a completely new set of project drawings.

Summary:
Contemporary urban development is increasingly characterized by a reliance on diagrams to convey the rational statistical point of view of the professional urban planner. In his new book Urbanisms architect Steven Holl suggests that just as modern medicine has recognized the power of the irrational psyche urban planners need to realize that the experiential power of cities cannot be completely rationalized and must be studied subjectively. With a selection of urban and architectural projects from his thirty year practice Holl stretches urban planning into the domain of uncertainty. Analyzing a wide range of matters from everyday experiences to spatial data Urbanisms examines how perception and the senses are intertwined with the material space and light of urban form

Summary:
With a focus on social reality and a respect for local context and vernacular craftsmanship, Liu Jiakun's work shows a rare attempt to translate and transfer traditional Chinese cultural ethos into contemporary architectural language, and represents a fine quality of intertexture between individual and collective memories. Many of these projects throw light on the reciprocal relation between Chinese people's public life and urban cultural space. Aedes exclusively presents mainly local projects in Chengdu including West Village Yard. The exhibition unfolds urban evolutionary history and the genius loci of the city, as well as demonstrates Chengdu's humanistic standpoint in practicing a new model of urbanization. It aims to open a new chapter of urban development dialogue between Germany and China.
