Pinos's architecture of overlay is evident in her design process; her unique models and drawings are complex compositions that reinforce the multifaceted quality of her design. This monograph, the first comprehensive English-language publication of the architect's work, presents extensive visual documentation of twenty-five built and unbuilt works from 1991, the year she founded her own firm, to the present. Pinos is particularly noted for her large-scale architecture-landscape projects, including her most significant current project, the JVC Cultural & Business Center fair area, part of a major project in Guadalajara, Mexico. Among other designs are the pedestrian bridge, Petrer, Alicante; Dunar Park, Matalascanas, Huelva; the Juan Aparicio and Punta Prima waterfonts, Torrevieja, Alicante; and landscape improvements and recreational center, Caldas de Reis, Galicia. Pinos also specializes in sports facilities and schools.

As Italian architect, engineer and curator Carlo Ratti puts it, "Architecture has always been a response to a hostile climate … our creations have always striven to bridge the gap between a harsh environment and the safe, livable spaces we require. Today, that dynamic approach is being taken to a new level—as climate becomes less forgiving. We have witnessed firsthand how(...)

We have witnessed firsthand how water and fire are attacking us with unprecedented ferocity." This two-volume publication accompanies the 19th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, titled "Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective." Contributions from more than 750 participants—including architects and engineers, mathematicians and climate scientists, philosophers and artists, chefs and coders, writers and woodcarvers, farmers and fashion designers, and many more—explore how effective methods of adaptation to our changing environment demand inclusivity and collaboration.

Summary:
Translated into English for the first time, ''On Contemporary Art,'' a speech by the renowned novelist César Aira, was delivered at a 2010 colloquium in Madrid dedicated to bridging the gap between writing and the visual arts. On Aira's path, everything comes under question - from reproducibility of artworks to the value of the written word itself. In the end, Aira leaves us stranded on the bridge between writing and art that he set out to construct in the first place. Like the great writers Walter Benjamin and Hermann Broch before him, Aira operates in the space between fiction and essay writing, art and analysis. Pursuing questions about reproducibility, art making, and limits of language, Aira's unique voice adds new insights to the essential conversations that continue to inform our understanding of art.

Summary:
Architect of the Broadway Chambers Building, the US Custom House, the Minnesota State Capitol, the St. Louis Art Museum, and large-scale projects like the city plan for New Haven, Connecticut, Gilbert is most famous for his skyscrapers - "symbols of our national genius and unrestraint" - monuments of the Beaux Arts "City Beautiful" aesthetic he embraced throughout his career. Containing essays by major Gilbert scholars, Inventing the Skyline documents fascinating details about the buildings: the color scheme of the main entrance of the Minnesota State Capitol, made to resemble the Byzantine tomb of Galla Placidia in Ravenna; the controversy that erupted over the use of female nudes on the relief of the Essex County Courthouse; and the ill-fated plans for the George Washington Bridge as a Beaux Arts monument with elaborate plazas, fountains, and sculptures.

Summary:
In "Wendy Evans Joseph : Pop-Up Architecture", six of Joseph’s most outstanding and award-winning architectural and interior design projects are brought to life in 3-D. From a Japanese-inspired home observatory, to a quiet, contemplative memorial garden, to a modern, cantilevered pedestrian bridge, each of the pops in the book allows the reader to engage with Joseph’s work in a new way. The pops themselves are minimally illustrated in solid-colored or lightly patterned paper to suggest the materials used in the construction — aluminum, cedar, terrazzo, steel — while photographs serve as the background design and provide additional views of the structure. Accompanying each pop is a text offering a brief discussion of the inspiration behind the work and some of the challenges Joseph and her team faced during the development and construction phases.

Summary:
Physicist Mark Denny looks at the large structures around us -- tall buildings, long bridges, and big dams -- and explains how they were designed and built and why they sometimes collapse, topple, or burst. Employing history, humor, and simple physics to consider such topics as when to use screws or nails, what trusses are, why iron beams are often I-shaped, and why medieval cathedrals have buttresses, Denny allows readers to appreciate the core principles that keep these engineering marvels upright without having to master complex mathematical equations.

Summary:
For the first time, this book gives a comprehensive account of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s urban projects. It presents preparatory drawings, collages and models for many little-known works from the artists’ early career, some of which were never carried out, such as the planned wrapping of several New York City skyscrapers, as well as the spectacular large-scale projects of later years, such as the wrapping of the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris in 1985, the wrapping of the Reichstag building in Berlin in 1995 and the 2005 installation The Gates in New York’s Central Park. In two detailed essays, the authors of the book explore Christo’s extraordinary talent for drawing and investigate the artists’ ambivalent perspective on urban space, which oscillates between a powerful critique of the city’s impersonal modernism and a tribute to the liberal, democratic use of urban areas.
