Project
AP178.S1.1965.PR01
Description:
This project series documents the submission for Siza's CODA (Concurso para a Obtenção do Diploma de Arquitecto), for which he submitted his project Casa Rui Feijó in Caminha, Portugal. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number [17]/60. The office assigned the date 1965 to this project. CODA is the final step for students to obtain their architecture degree. Siza used his preliminary work for the Casa Rui Feijó to develop his submission for his CODA. This project is a vacation house with three bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen, living room, service bedroom, exterior annex, garage, lounge and terrace. The original project for the home is also described in this fonds (see project series AP178.S1.1963.PR01). Documenting this project are plans and elevations. Also included are a small number of photographs and some project documentation.

AP207.S1.1971.PR05
Description:
The project series documents the performance "Falsa Curva D'Autostrada", also know in English as Fake Expressway Bend. The performance was undertaken with a group of Pettena's students from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in Minneapolis, in 1971. It consisted of hanging a large tarp from the overpass of an expressway under construction. The tarp extended to the road underneath and was used to create a fake bend in the overpass. The performance was targeting "the excess of uniformity in urban design" by reimagining the linearity of the overpass into a fake curve. The project series contains two photographs of the fake expressway bend, two sketches for the installation, and project descriptions in English and in Italian. Ice House I (1971)
AP207.S1.1971.PR06
Description:
The project series documents the project "Ice House I" for which Pettena once again studied the transformation of a building overtaken by nature. The project consisted of pouring water on the walls of an abandoned school building in Minneapolis and letting it freeze during the night to obtain a building covered by ice. "The school preserved its typology, the typical form of that typology, but once coated in ice it was the material that transformed it: it came alive, for it had been worked by nature." It is unclear if this project was ever performed. The project series contains photographs of the frozen building, sketches, a perspective drawing, and project descriptions in English and in Italian. Description:
The project series documents "Paesaggi Della Memoria", an installation presented at the Castello Aragonese, in Otranto in 1987. The installation consists of a small mound of sand on which is placed a plastic open suitcase and plastic cuttings that represent the mountains from Pettena's childhood landscape. This work by Pettena is a "metaphor for any possible personal interpretation of the universal theme of the landscape, bestow on it an artistic significance, the charge carried by the values of poetry, of the memory of a space and a time that here also acquire, thanks to the context, the “Mediterranean” dimension, reinforced by the presence of sand and the essential character of the setting." [1] The project series contains sketches and installation photographs and videos. Human Space (2012)
AP207.S1.2012.PR06
Description:
The project series documents the installation "Human Wall", designed by Pettena for the Galleria Enrico Fornello in Milan in 2012. The installation consists of a wall made of handmade balls of clay on which the handprints from making the clay balls intentionally remain. "The physicality and action of constructing is also accentuated here by the use of a natural material, clay, whose malleability and lack of homogeneity in themselves generate architecture, an architecture that can however be directed toward a mental use of space." [1] Another edition of this installation was presented at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art in Salt Lake City in 2012. The project series contains drawings showing the construction of the installation and photographs of the installation. Description:
The project series documents "The Game of Architecture", a drawing realized in 2013. The drawing is of triangular-shaped structures made of bricks standing in a desert. This drawing is a reinterpretation of a previous project by Pettena "Situazioni Competitive" in 1971. "Here architecture, albeit with the same characteristic of competitiveness, becomes indistinct, confused, no longer the leading actor, at the mercy of an unknown context (a desert? the nature of an alien planet?) which, threatening to overwhelm it, seems to nullify its every need and characteristic." [1] The project series contains a drawing for the 2013 edition and the 2018 version, which is a digital photograph modified to show the architectural construction standing in rough water. Energy FREE TREE (2017)
AP207.S1.2017.PR03
Description:
The project series documents the installation "Energy FREE TREE" designed by Pettena and presented at Museion in Bozen, in 2017. The installation consists of a tower measuring eight meters high by four meters wide. The tower is built with parts, including doors, fenders, exhaust pipes, and lights, and is meant to represent a Christmas tree standing next to the museum entrance during Christmas. "The work was, in fact, meant to trigger ‘mental shortcircuits [sic]’ in order to obtain a reaction so as to introduce the subject of environmental awareness and the need of using recycled materials to reduce damages to the environment as much as possible." [1] The project series contains a video, photographs of the installation, and two drawings. Description:
The project series documents the installation "Architecture Ondoyante", designed by Pettena and presented at the FRAC Lorraine in Metz, in 2014. The installation consists of hanging long strips of white plastic on the facades of the FRAC building "to confuse the well-defined and somewhat austere space of the building that hosts the FRAC, wrapping it in light and movement would have overturned the grain of static, centuries-old architecture." [1] A similar installation, "Forgiving Architecture" was realized in 2009 at the Athens Biennale. Another edition of the installation was presented in the exhibition "Gianni Pettena. About non conscious architecture" at the Galleria Giovanni Bonelli in Milan, in 2017. The project series contains three sketches, a drawing, and photographs and videos of the installation. Description:
This project series documents additions and alterations to the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick from 1981-1986. The office identified this project as 8018. The Beaverbrook Art Gallery, located beside the St. John River, was designed by Neil Stewart in 1956. The additions and alterations to the original design consisted of the addition of an east wing to the existing structure as well as upgrades to mechanical and electrical systems. A feasibility study was conducted and two schemes were proposed for the project. The project is recorded through textual records, drawings, and site and construction photographs. The feasibility study is recorded through reprographic copies of drawings. The textual records show client correspondence, site planning, contractor and consultant work, construction and associated shop drawings. Textual documents also record a lawsuit brought against the firm by project consultants ADI Limited following construction.
