Summary:
At first glance, "Not a cookbook" appears to be just what its title implies – but beneath the surface lies a layered, collage-style portrait of a restaurant and the family that holds it together. Centered on Resto Palme, a Caribbean restaurant in Montreal run by married duo Lee-Anne Millaire Lafleur and Ralph Alerte, the book offers a deeply personal and provocative exploration of kitchen culture, where food becomes a lens through which to examine family, friendship, labor, and resistance. A longtime friend of the family, Reis takes an embedded, nonlinear approach to storytelling. Through photographs, texts, and contributions from customers and staff, Not a Cookbook captures not just the daily challenges of running a family business, but also the peripheral stories – of racism, activism, and the emotional labor required to build and protect something shared and sacred.

Summary:
Around the world, mass transit is struggling to compete with the private automobile, and in many places, its market share is rapidly eroding. Yet a number of metropolitan areas have in recent decades managed to mount cost-effective and resource-conserving transit services that provide respectable alternatives to car travel. What sets these places apart? In this book, noted transportation expert Robert Cervero provides an on-the-ground look at more than a dozen mass transit success stories, introducing the concept of the "transit metropolis"-a region where a workable fit exists between transit services and urban form. The author has spent more than three years studying cities around the world, and he makes a compelling case that metropolitan areas of any size and with any growth pattern-from highly compact to widely dispersed-can develop successful mass transit systems.

Summary:
The official catalog of the 15th Venice Biennale Architecture Exhibition. More and more people on the planet are looking for a decent place to live, even though the chances to find one are becoming tougher and tougher by the hour. Nevertheless, on the frontlines of the built environment there lingers a sense of vitality that brings architecture to look at reality in a positive way. This is what people will see at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition: success stories and exemplary cases where architecture has made, is making, and will make a difference. Reporting from the Front aims at explaining to a broader audience what it means to improve the quality of life while working on the margins, under heavy circumstances, and facing pressing challenges. And what it is like to be on the cutting edge trying to conquer new fields.

Summary:
In the nineteenth century, inexpensive editions of Jane Austen's novels targeted to Britain's working classes were sold at railway stations, traded for soap wrappers, and awarded as school prizes. At just pennies a copy, these reprints were some of the earliest mass-market paperbacks, with Austen's beloved stories squeezed into tight columns on thin, cheap paper. Few of these hard-lived bargain books survive, yet they made a substantial difference to Austen's early readership. These were the books bought and read by ordinary people. ''The lost books of Jane Austen'' is a unique history of these rare and forgotten Austen volumes. Such shoddy editions, Janine Barchas argues, were instrumental in bringing Austen's work and reputation before the general public. Only by examining them can we grasp the chaotic range of Austen's popular reach among working-class readers.

Summary:
The celebrated Dutch architectural photographer Iwan Baan (born 1975) has dedicated his career to capturing the stories told by buildings. This publication compiles his series on Willem Marinus Dudok (1884–1974), known as the father of Dutch modernism. Decades after their construction, Dudok’s designs remain keenly relevant for their exceptional spatial sensitivity. In this series, Baan expands his lens to encompass Dudok as a designer not only of singular buildings but of whole landscapes in which people are able to live, work and learn. Through impressive aerial and street photography, Baan conveys the breadth of Dudok’s practice as an urban designer, focusing in particular on his ability to expand metropolitan neighborhoods in a way that felt entirely natural. Additional insight into Dudok’s craft and its lasting influence on contemporary European architecture is provided by architectural historian Lara Voerman.

Summary:
During the Cold War era, the songs that Soviet citizens could listen to were ruthlessly controlled by the state. But a secret underground subculture of music lovers and bootleggers defied the censors, building recording machines and making their own records of forbidden jazz, rock 'n' roll, and Russian music, cut onto used hospital x-ray film. Foregrounding interviews and oral testimonies gathered over five years, this volume presents the stories of the original bone bootleggers, their customers, musicians, record collectors, and commentators, evoking a spirited resistance to a repressive culture of prohibition and punishment. Richly illustrated with dozens of new images of Soviet x-ray discs and sound letters, the book details how the bootleggers worked, outlining the technical precedents of their techniques, situating their discs in a revised history of recorded media, and bringing a wealth of compelling new detail.

Summary:
Colonial and imperial powers have often portrayed arid lands as “empty” spaces ready to be occupied, exploited, extracted, and polluted. Despite the undeniable presence of human and nonhuman lives and forces in desert territories, the “regime of emptiness” has inhabited, and is still inhabiting, many imaginaries. This volume challenges this colonial tendency, questions its roots and ramifications, and remaps the representations, theories, histories, and stories of arid lands—which comprise approximately one-third of the Earth’s land surface. It brings together poems in original languages, conversations with collectives, and essays by scholars and professionals from the fields of architecture, architectural history and theory, curatorial studies, comparative literature, film studies, landscape architecture, and photography. These different approaches and diverse voices draw on a framework of decoloniality to unsettle and unlearn the desert, opening up possibilities to see, think, imagine it otherwise.

Summary:
Bitterfeld’s county museum, Kreismuseum Bitterfeld, contains a black box with herbaria dating from 1931. This collection, compiled by botanist Hans Weber, is an inventory of the flora gathered in the nearby Goitzsche region, a forested area of floodplain. It was not long before the plant life collected here was forced to give way to society’s demand for brown coal. Taking the herbaria as its starting point, this book interweaves stories about Bitterfeld’s energy-defined landscape with the modern legacy of the Bauhaus. Using archival documents, physical interventions, and field studies, the book proposes a new reading of the Bauhaus’s modernist motto ”Light! Air! Sun!“ recast as ”Heat, Breath, Growth“. The book thus points up the downside of resource extraction and environmental destruction in the ”clean modern age“, while also identifying movements in search of a nature-based culture characterized by care and stewardship.

Summary:
Exploding with unfolding pages and multiple directions, Kapow! is a new book by British writer Adam Thirlwell. Set in the thick of the Arab Spring, it is guided by the high-speed monologue of an unnamed narrator — over-doped, over-caffeinated, overweight — trying to make sense of this history in real time. A clever, funny, and bitingly critical cultural commentary, it uses spinning digressions to tell the stories of a group of interconnected characters in London and Egypt, each transformed by the idea of revolution. Kapow! asks readers to open and unfold pages, to follow text leaking in and out of paragraphs, while progressively becoming part of and lost within the narrator’s giddy digressions. A beautifully crafted object told in Thirlwell’s uniquely acrobatic voice, this is a visually immersive storytelling experience like no other. *** Designed by London-based Studio Frith
