Summary:
The architecture of Paolo Portoghesi is careful to the diversity of sites, sensitive to the needs and desires of those who live with it, and always thick with references to tradition and the various fields of artistic expression and knowledge. This book shows how he has taken up the challenge posed by the question of how man and the city relate and how he has raised the ethical legacy of modern architecture by envisioning a future that can oppose the wave of consumerism and social competition. Portoghesi firmly believes in the new wave of Geo-architecture: an architecture that takes on the responsibility to help human society to forge a new alliance with nature.

Summary:
Making a Case focuses on contemporary housing in the United States and the future of the American home. Like the Case Study program after World War II, it seizes on a critical moment in the history of America as a time to reinvent the single-family dwelling unit-post-crisis rather than post-war. The crisis in this case is the collapse of the housing bubble, with its partnering causes and aftershocks: the reality of less oil, the urge to reurbanize, and the results of economic reorganization. Organized in two sections, design cases and commentary, this periodical draws together international contributors from a variety of disciplines to address this critical moment for housing in America.

Summary:
When we think of segregation, what often comes to mind is apartheid South Africa, or the American South in the age of Jim Crow—two societies fundamentally premised on the concept of the separation of the races. But as Carl H. Nightingale shows us in this history, segregation is everywhere, deforming cities and societies worldwide. Starting with segregation’s ancient roots, and what the archaeological evidence reveals about humanity’s long-standing use of urban divisions to reinforce political and economic inequality, Nightingale then moves to the world of European colonialism. This publication lays bare our troubled past, and sets us on the path to imagining the better, more equal cities of the future.

Summary:
Metabolism Trip is a collection of photographs and short stories of Charlie Koolhaas’ journey along many of the remaining buildings of the Metabolist Movement. In the late 1950s a small group of young Japanese architects and designers joined forces under the title of "Metabolism". Their visions for cities of the future inhabited by a mass society were characterized by large scale structures. Charlie Koolhaas, a Dutch photographer and editor of UNIT magazine, traveled across Japan in 2009 to photograph how these architectural icons have survived and aged. What do their founding fathers and their inhabitants think of these buildings now? What Koolhaas found were triumphant and at times eerie constructions that had taken on a life of their own.

The Planning Game: Lessons from Great Cities provides a focused and thorough overview of how planning works, illustrated with 200 colorful photographs, diagrams, and maps created expressly for the book. It presents the public realm approach to planning—an approach that emphasizes the importance of public investments in what we own: streets, squares, parks, infrastructure, and public buildings. The book covers planning at every level, explaining the activities that go into successfully transforming a community as exemplified by four cities and their colorful motive forces: Paris (Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann), New York (Robert Moses), Chicago (Daniel Burnham), and Philadelphia (Edmund Bacon).

Summary:
“In The Hunting Field is a collection of encounters that uses the figure of the hunter-trapper as a figurative and literal approach for looking at contemporary understandings of animal, nature, and environment in an ecological age where entities collide at scales massively distributed in space and time.” The figure of the hunter-trapper is used to draw attention to a significant intertwining with the biological world that shapes bodies and technology. It is not meant as an exhaustive signifier for a linear history but instead as an opportunity to survey encounters that shape these understandings and so inform our place in the world. Perhaps a reinterpretation of environmental aesthetics can provide openings for alternate shapes of future encounters…

Summary:
Dayanita Singh's photos of archives and their custodians across India examine how memory is made and how history is narrated. These images bring to light the paradox of archives: they are impersonal in their classifications, yet each is the careful handiwork of an individual archivist, an unsung keeper of history whose decisions generate the sources of much of our knowledge. Archives are vessels of orthodox fact but can also be the home of neglected details and forgotten documents than can unfix the status quo. As the pace of change in contemporary India accelerates and Indians turn from the past and fix their gaze on the future, what will become of the archive?

Summary:
Architectural collections are warehouses of knowledge: they are resources for historical plans and buildings, and they offer insight and ideas for the designs of tomorrow. However, in the age of computer-aided design, the sketches, plans and models that were once available for research and exhibitions are being replaced by bits and bytes on a variety of storage media whose lifetimes have no guaranteed length. The Architekturmuseum at the Technical University in Munich has one of the largest special collections of architecture in Europe. This publication presents its complex history while placing it in the context of other prominent international collections. Selected examples are used to discuss questions about collecting, research and the exhibition of architecture in the future.
