Summary:
Made from prefabricated concrete panels, Plattenbauten rose from the ruins of Berlin, providing a quick and inexpensive solution to the severe housing shortage faced by the city after World War II. Although criticized in their day for their sterility and impersonal scale, they nonetheless became an integral part of the city. Drawn from his extensive investigations into Berlin’s urban landscape, Jesse Simon’s texts and photographs offer a convincing argument for the aesthetic and social value of buildings that were once described as “eyesores.”

Summary:
Since 1978, Herzog & de Meuron have consistently refined a fundamental approach to architecture that is tangibly rooted in the urban biography of Basel. It is here in the birthplace of the two founders that the office has prospered and acquired an international reach. The work of the architects is inscribed in the landscape of Basel, a city that has now become a triational metropolis. This book is the result of ten years of exchange with Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron, and their partners. Interwoven texts and images yield an eloquent portrait of Herzog & de Meuron and trace the physiognomy of an expanded historical territory, both monumental and intimate.

Summary:
The Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (MCHAP), directed by Dirk Denison from within the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), promotes an academic award that is given to the best architecture built in the American continent during a specific period. ''MCHAP The Americas 2: Territory & expeditions,'' is inspired on the discussions held during the second cycle of the prize, which took place in 2016. Based on the selection of the finalist projects—Weekend House by SPBR, New Campus for the UTEC by Grafton Architects, Pachacamac Museum by Llosa Cortegana Architects, Tower 41 by Alberto Kalach, Star Apartmens by Michael Maltzan Architecture, and Grace Farms by SANAA—, the jury conversations and ''discoveries'' were very much conditioned by the ideas of nature and its intimate relation to architecture and landscape. This book is part a reader, part a catalogue, part a visual essay/research on these matters. The texts and projects are in themselves contributions to the field as they show new understandings about the relationship between architecture and its environment as well as singularities and genealogies of the most prominent architectures of the Americas.

Summary:
Over nearly six decades of practice, Robert Royston (1918–2008) shaped the postwar Bay Area landscape with visionary designs for public spaces. Early in his career, Royston conceived of the "landscape matrix," a system of interconnected parks, plazas, and parkways that he hoped could bring order and amenity to rapidly developing suburbs. The idea would inform his work on more than two thousand projects as diverse as school grounds, new towns, transit corridors, and housing tracts. As an apprentice of Thomas Church, Royston gained experience with residential gardens that influenced his early designs for public parks. At a time when neighborhood parks were typically limited to playing fields and stock playground equipment, Royston created imaginative facilities for the American family, offering activities for people of all ages.

Summary:
The modernist parks and gardens of Brazilian landscape architect and garden designer Roberto Burle Marx (1909–1994) earned him awards, widespread acclaim, and international fame. Over a 60-year career, he designed more than 2,000 gardens worldwide, the most famous of which are those he created in collaboration with the architect Oscar Niemeyer for Brasília. Although he is best known for his landscape work, Burle Marx was a prolific artist in a variety of media, and his larger body of work—which includes paintings, drawings, tile mosaics, sculpture, textile design, jewelry, theater costumes, and more—is critical to understanding his importance as a modernist. An avid horticulturalist, he was among the first to denounce deforestation in the Amazon region; he also discovered over thirty species of Brazilian flora, which bear his name.

Summary:
"Armed surfaces" presents DRD Lab's investigations into contemporary reality and a new typology for living. An analysis of transitional moments in daily life instigates a re-examination of Modern Functionalism as an ideology of standardisation and normalcy. The DRD Lab uses theory, spatial and cultural analysis, dynamic measurement, temporal positioning and their collected data to develop a non-standard diagram which exposes the new role of architectural surfaces as 'performing surfaces'. This concept is explored through a series of research-oriented projects which include 'custom mass produced' contemporary housing, a performance induced landscape and an urban frontage. In the diverse projects which she undertakes, Richter seeks to radically reinvent urban design through a game of 'retracing' and 'restitution', founded in the notion that information is what qualifies space. The book explores new solutions to architecture and planning exposing an alternative view of architecture.

An Exploration into Material, Physiological and Territorial Atmospheres. Energy and sustainability is a complex topic that needs to address simultaneously core disciplinary values and ideas that come from other fields of knowledge. The interconnection between the environment and its climate, its built structures and the human body requires overlying architecture with other disciplines such as meteorology, thermodynamics or physiology to engage them in a holistic way.
