"The modern japanese garden" is a celebration of the immense diversity of garden designs in Japan, from animist-infused, prototypical stone arrangements placed in sacred groves, to extraordinary post-war innovations. In a beautifully designed package, it is an object to treasure, one that examines post-war shifts in attitudes towards the contemporary garden as they moved from status symbols and expressions of influence to spaces of healing, mediation, and connection to nature. It is intended for both horticultural and general readers with an interest in landscape design and Japan's contemporary lifestyle, featuring gardens from across Japan that offer insight into some of the most renowned Japanese designers across history.

Summary:
The founders of Dumbarton Oaks, Mildred and Robert W. Bliss, were important American philanthropists; the garden was developed between 1920 and 1965 by Mildred Bliss. She worked with several designers, the most significant of whom was the American landscape gardener Beatrix Farrand. The romantic but disciplined design, a series of small individual terraces and winding walkways, reflects the character of Mildred Bliss: her place in society, her travels, and her spiritual ideals. Cool formality, joyful opulence, and feelings of intimacy, reticence, and artlessness are all present in the garden. Private, public, and utilitarian areas coexist within the integrated whole. This volume, the first to present the gardens of Dumbarton Oaks, features more than 100 color photographs of the garden in all seasons. Photographer Ping Amranand has documented the garden over the course of more than a decade, and his exceptional images capture all aspects of the garden. Susan Tamulevich’s text details the original conception of the garden, its implementation over the course of half a century, and its continuing inspiration as an unparalleled American landscape.

Summary:
Gardens have always been places of leisure, pleasure and production; they reflect identities, dreams and visions. Deeply rooted in their culture, gardens have immense symbolic potential. The recent revival of horticulture has focused less on the garden as a romantic refuge than as a place where we might imagine the future and develop solutions. Urban farms, vertical gardens and other innovative projects in art, architecture and urban planning demonstrate that the present return to the garden is no timid retreat, but a pioneering quest for a world in which social and ecological justice count for something. ''Garden Futures'' examines what gardens and their design reveal about our relationship to nature. In exploring the history of ideas behind the genesis of the modern garden, the book takes a close look at the present, goes in search of origins in the past and builds bridges into the future.
