Summary:
In "Havana beyond the Ruins," prominent architects, scholars, and writers based in and outside of Cuba analyze how Havana has been portrayed in literature, music, and the visual arts since Soviet subsidies of Cuba ceased, and the Cuban state has re-imagined Havana as a destination for international tourists and business ventures. Cuba's capital has experienced little construction since the revolution of 1959; many of its citizens live in poorly maintained colonial and modernist dwellings. It is this Havana--of crumbling houses, old cars, and a romantic aura of ruined hopes--that is marketed in picture books, memorabilia, and films. Bringing together assessments of the city's dwellings and urban development projects, "Havana beyond the Ruins" provides unique insights into issues of memory, citizenship, urban life, and the future of the revolution in Cuba.

Summary:
In the past fifteen years, file sharing of digital cultural works between individuals has been at the center of a number of debates on the future of culture itself. To some, sharing constitutes piracy, to be fought against and eradicated. Others see it as unavoidable, and table proposals to compensate for its harmful effects. Meanwhile, little progress has been made towards addressing the real challenges facing culture in a digital world. Sharing starts from a radically different viewpoint, namely that the non-market sharing of digital works is both legitimate and useful. Philippe Aigrain looks at the benefits of file sharing, which allows unknown writers and artists to be appreciated more easily. It supports this premise with empirical research, demonstrating that non-market sharing leads to more diversity in the attention given to various works.

In the era of e-books and online trade when the classic book trade has come under increasing pressure, the success of a bookshop is not a foregone conclusion. Booksellers confront these new challenges with very different economic strategies and conceptual measures. Spatial concepts, furnishings and design are indispensable ingredients of a successful sales strategy for newer as well as more tradition steeped bookstores. People like to linger - and buy - where they feel comfortable. This volume is dedicated to the 35 bookstores in the world. The old and the new, classical and innovative, giant stores and paradises in miniature for bibliophiles: What they all have in common is that they create a desire for books and prove that the bookshop as institution will always fulfil a need and without a doubt enjoys a future.

Summary:
Over the course of about ten years, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Matthew Barney met several times to discuss Barney's past work, current projects and his plans for the future. The resulting collection of interviews provides a rare insight into how the work and working method of one of the most prominent artists of a generation has developed over time, and uncovers the ideas, influences and collaborations that lie behind his multi-layered and multimedia creative output. The conversation covers all of his major pieces to date, from the internationally acclaimed "Cremaster" cycle to the somewhat less well-known "Drawing Restraint" series, as well as looking at particular projects in more detail, such as the recent "Khu" performance and Barney's participation in "Il Tempo del Postino," curated by Obrist at the 2007 Manchester International Festival.

Summary:
In Walls, Oles shows how our minds and our politics are shaped by –and shape– our divisions in the landscape. He traces the rich array of practices and meanings connected to the making and marking of boundaries across history and prehistory, and he describes how these practices have declined in recent centuries. The consequence, he argues, is all around us in the contemporary landscape, riven by walls shoddy in material and mean in spirit. Yet even today, Oles demonstrates, every wall remains potentially an opening, a stage, that critical place in the landscape where people present themselves and define their obligations to one another. In an evocative epilogue, Oles brings to life a society of productive, intentional, and ethical enclosure—one that will leave readers more hopeful about the divided landscapes of the future.

Summary:
Is the idea of environment in architecture only ever reducible to 'environmental architecture'? For Ricardo de Ostos and Nanette Jackowski, tutors of Intermediate Unit 3 at the Architectural Association, the answer is a resolute no. Instead they offer an alternative reading of 'environment', in which the brutal and lyrical are juxtaposed through visually compelling narratives of architecture. Illustrating their apporach, this book presents ten years of student projects, all prompted by the unit's visits to extreme geographical contexts - from the rainforests of Brazil to the quarries of northern India. With additional photographic documentation and conversations with Lebbeus Woods, Geoff Manaugh and Peter Cook, Scavengers & Other Creatures in Promised Lands explores the gripping power of myth and fiction as radial narratives for imagining the near future of cities and forests.

Summary:
About Two Squares, a book for children by the Russian avant-garde artist El Lissitzky, will extend the boundaries of anyone's imagination. Radically simple, and yet sophisticated, this book tells the story of two squares who take on the mission of rebuilding the world. First published in 1922 in post-revolutionary Russia, About Two Squares was "constructed" using pure geometric forms and typographic elements as a means to disseminate the new order, with Lissitzky propelling the reader to build their own future and pointing them in a daringly modern direction. Inspired by Kazimir Malevich's suprematist vision of a non-objective art, About Two Squares had an immediate impact on the European art world with its publication in Theo van Doesburg's avant-garde art journal, De Stijl, and redefined what an illustrated book could be.

Summary:
In 1939 the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation opened its first gallery space—the Museum of Non-Objective Painting—in a former Manhattan automobile showroom on East 54th Street. Seventy-five years later, the Guggenheim Foundation operates museums in New York, Venice, Bilbao, and soon, Abu Dhabi. Until relatively recently, additional Guggenheims could be found in Berlin, Las Vegas, and downtown New York. Designed by some of the world’s most prominent architects, these museums have often been distinguished as much by their architecture as by the art displayed within. They have also sparked debates ranging from the intrusiveness of architecture in an art museum to the ability of a single building to transform an entire city. This new issue of CLOG will critically examine the past, present, and future architectural impact of this global institution.
